James’ channel started when his father would send train videos to him while traveling the world on business. This gradually turned into a father and son project. Some videos are taken when spending time together and others are when the elder James is back on the road.
We would like to thank all of the wonderful railroad professionals encountered overs the years including (but not limited to) Amtrak (inclusive of long haul, MidWest, Cascades, San Joaquins, and Pacific Surfliner), BNSF, Canadian Pacific, Union Pacific, CSX, Norfolk Southern, Metra, Chicago Transit Authority, Manila Light Rail System, Philippine National Railway, Japan Railway Group, CalTrain, San Jose Valley Railroad, San Diego and Imperial, Pacific Sun, Metrolink, LA Metro, Disneyland Railroad, Poway Midland Railroad, Sacramento Southern Railroad, MTS San Diego Trolley, Sprinter, Coaster, Metro North, Long Island Railroad in addition to Progress Rail. Train videos taken before and after Disneyland throughout 2024
These videos were recorded before and after our Disneyland trips throughout 2024 and include Anaheim, Commerce Station, and Los Angeles. Our most recent trip was Friday November 29th, 2024 which included a look from Keller Yard’s perimeter and Los Union Passenger Terminal (LAUPT).

It was a pleasant surprise to see some of these old Bombardier coaches being actively repaired (sheet metal work) right in front of us! Note: All footage recorded through the perimeter chain link fence. Please do not trespass and follow all direction of railroad personnel in addition to law enforcement.

8:28 That surfliner was really long
You are correct! The eight car bi-level consist starting at 07:58 was indeed long. Happy holidays @blose774! 🎄❄️
@@jamesreillytrains Happy Holidays to you as well!🎄
There called driving van trailers
@Baconbs718 : Good to know. NPCU in North America = Driving Van Trailers in the United Kingdom. 👍🏽
I have new videos of the Miramar local coming at the end of this year. Sadly, I was only able to film two of the secondary railroad crossings in action and not the other two at Distribution Ave and Carroll Rd before it went out of service. I was so depressed about that because I tried so hard for 9 months to get it using those last two crossings and I kept missing it after all of those other nights I was there waiting for it. The secondary was used just 3 times in 2024.
I hope 2305 doesn’t become a coach
@@sebastianmunera5470 : We are in agreement. 👍🏽👍🏽
2305 is missing a bunch of its things now which are its own door, its mirrors, its marker lights, one of its ditch lights, its head lights and most of its windows. On the bright side it still has its numberboards, its red emergency brake light, its strobe lights, its horn and bell.
5 coaster coaches 2202, 2204, 2205, 2206 and 2207 are being sold to front runner
Ive heard that some chargers have broke in the past so they have needed the extra equipment for a while now.
@blose774: You are correct. The Chargers entered service along the Surfline Q4 2018 and they seemed reliable initially… But the number of mechanical casualties throughout the Surfline’s SC-44 fleet has wreaked havoc of late. The DASH 8 locomotives seem a little underpowered for the Alstom bi-level consists on revenue services. It will be interesting to see if Siemens and Amtrak California can mitigate the mechanicals issues, or if they eventually have to lease some of the redundant GE P42DC Genesis locomotives to augment their ailing fleet.
Its electric
Well done James. Very enjoyable.
@@WaynoGur: Thank you sir! 😃😃
Game over metrolink F59S, don't worry phrs, you be out.
Unfortunately 887 is no longer in Keller yard,
@@metra1383 : You are correct. Our understanding is that it has been sold and will be comprehensively rebuilt for a different railroad.
Full watching❤❤
Thanks for sharing! These look much nicer inside then I was expecting
@RailClipper: The interior of the California Comet cars are in excellent condition. The consensus is that they ride very differently than the salvaged California Superliner I and purpose-built California cars and Surfliners. More leg room, more comfortable seating, but less capacity (for busy trains) and slower egress at station stops. Definitely solid additions to the Surfline roster. Hopefully they can procure a few Amfleet or Horizon cafe cars to complete these consists.
90225 is back!😃
wow!We got all sorts of equipment running on the surfline.Amazing!
From what I’ve heard, 2117 was retired from service due to prime mover issues.
First charger to ever retire (not including 1402)
@@SD40-2 yeah, 1402 was a Cascades locomotive, not a Surfliner unit.

When did you see dash 8 ?
Dash 8 locomotives 510, 509, and 503 often substituted along the Surfline in September of 2024. 👍🏽👍🏽
Great content guys!, just a note at part 9:16 in the video, the signal indication for that signal is an approach diverging, as north county owns the railroad so therefore north county signals are observed on the territory, now if you were on BNSF territory, you had that spot on, coming from a railroader 1st hand qualified with the territory 👍🏽
Thank you sir! 👍🏽👍🏽
Nice catches! Actually rode 769 on Sunday with 90225 leading, also caught it leading Monday's 765.
Nice! 😃
2305s door is on 2304 because 2304s door was dented in a pedestrian strike
I passed by the coaster yard yesterday and saw 2305 missing its door and mirrors apparently it’s having brake issues and might be converted into a coach car I hope that’s not the case
Good intel. We are in full concurrence. 👍🏽👍🏽

Metrolink and with the engine coaster are rare

LTEX 18533 was upgraded by Progress Rail and is now running in Vancouver's West Coast Express rail system. It runs along with 5 other F59PHIs, and 1 MP36PH. It's been renumbered as WCE 907.
Moved on from the Capitol Corridor & San Joaquins To the Pacific Surfliner those comet cars
I got to see this locomotive at union station last Friday but I get a chance to take a picture of it my bus come when I see it
Gran video muy bueno like 👍🏻 merecido aqui un saludo 👋🏻 desde Argentina 🇦🇷 😊
Nice to see a cabbage back on the Surfliner after four years
@@Basinrails : Definitely! 👍🏽 👍🏽
90225 is nice to see on the surfline.I wonder what happened to 90215.
@@blose774 : Not sure what specifically happened to 90215, but it is evident Pacific Surfliner does not have cab car roster depth at the moment with 90215 undergoing maintenance (August 2024), 6906 sent back to Beech Grove (August 2024), 6953 (prognosis not yet disclosed) severely damaged (December 2023), and 6902 (beyond repair) structurally compromised (November 2001). These Alstom cab cars have proven to be popular, reliable, effective, and remarkably safe… But the loss of another cab car/NPCU coupled with a twenty four year old Alstom fleet starting to show its age (and mileage) has me wondering what Pacific Surfliner can do to mitigate in the interim. Do they plan to perform a midlife rebuild of the Alstom fleet at some point? The Sumitomo Corporation bi-levels failed to materialize… But some of California cars from the San Joaquins route are expected to eventually return to Pacific Surfliner at some point.
@@jamesreillytrains Since they have the extra weekend trains, they also require more additional equipment to run.
@@jamesreillytrainswould’ve been cool if they kept a couple f59phis and converted them to cabbage cars. Sad I’ll never get a chance to see a Surfliner f59phi
@@jamesreillytrains90215 has PTC and battery issues, so it’s currently awaiting to have those issues sorted out.
Just now saw it today. 770/581.
NPCU 90215 “Bakersfield” was undergoing unspecified maintenance this week, but hoping to see it return to San Diego in the not too distant future. It is interesting that the two NPCUs have been utilized with the Alstom bi-level Surfliners while the Com-Arrow single level rolling stock entered revenue service with a DASH 8 in lieu of an NPCU.
@@jamesreillytrains yeah. It's interesting they used a dash 8 instead of an npcu. However 90215, and I quote, "rides like a blender." The ptc issues are out of control, so they only used it for 1 day and then swapped it out.
2:13 One last time
Do these cars have business class or just regular Coach?
@@erikthetrainmaster6112 : No business class seats are sold, and no cafe car. With that stated, all passengers throughout the train are offered complimentary business class Amtrak snack packs and bottled water when aboard the Comet 1B consist.
California Amtrak got 14 of these rebuilt NJ Transit cars to tide em over til new cars arrived. They were supplemented by 3 Horizon fleet cafe cars. Two consists of a Genesis unit, 6 Com Arrow cars, cafe and ex F40 cab car were formed. Apparently today the only Comarrow consist is this, the other broken up to add to other trains axle counts.
Glad they brought the lower levels back. They havent been running at least since 2020.
@@blose774 : Feel the same way. So glad to see single level rolling stock back on the Surfline!
@@jamesreillytrains I definately agree with that!👍
Glad you were able to capture and even tour them James. Nice footage!
Jon: You rock! Thank you! 👍🏽👍🏽
Got more updates for you. The Miramar locals are once again coming from Barrio Logan, also the entire secondary is not in service anymore.
I have an update for you, the secondary is not in service anymore because the one company that needed freight service is going to move to a different location. So bummed that I couldn't film all the crossings in action down there.😔
i love those comet cars ... glad all the old equipment is making a return on the surfliner
@@jackchen7003 : We are in complete agreement! 👍🏽👍🏽
Do you know how long the comets will stay?
Unfortunately no. :(
😂❤🎉
Wow you got this one together real quick James , nice job !
@@johnledhalen2903 : Sorry for the delay responding, started school this week. Thank you sir! My Dad says hello.
@@jamesreillytrains It's cool I'll let you know when we get some foreign power in the yard.
I saw the surfliner😃 If didnt have a dash 8 or f40😭😭
@@ZaneTheRailfan : Hang in there Zane! 👍🏽🙂
The npcu and the dash 8 are pretty cool to see on the surfline!
@blose774: We are in agreement. Never thought we would see an F40 class NPCU in early Caltrain livery leading a bi-level Surfline consist. Best visiting NPCU we have had along the Surfline since Cascades 90230 led Horizons/Amfleets. 😃😃
@@jamesreillytrains I'm guessing their using it as protect power or maybe another cabcar broke down or something.
Cool! I saw the CSX unit in Gaslamp
CSX has several iconic liveries that are functional yet distinctive. Wish that CSX locomotives visited San Diego more often. 👍🏽👍🏽
Nice vid! Me and my mother chased the duo ns units down to national city
You have an awesome mom. Very kind of her. 👍🏽👍🏽
That first shot is amazing.
@@chessiesystem : Thank you! 😃😃
Nice video! 👍We have the same train in Romania!
911 was the leader for Antelope Valley line 281 I rode that train with 911 from LA Union station to Acton on Sunday August 11 2024
Fantastic video!! I was wondering if you know anything about the new schedule now that BNSF is running it out of Escondido again?
@@austin.700 - Thank you for the feedback! That daily job starts circa 2100 at the yard situated along Stuart Mesa, Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton but is (currently) only dispatched to Escondido a few times a week with an ETA circa 0200. Be extra careful if out there at zero dark thirty because there has been a lot of youth gang violence and substance abuse incidents in the area at night.
Ive been to both washington Dc and New York and enjoyed riding the amtrak and metro trains.
