It has a handle .. nice one
I have one hanging in the window of our den right now. Great lantern.
You could mention what liquid you use
the only liquids in this video are the linseed oil. that was clearly printed on the lid. and the 3in1 oil i used on chimney. which i did mention.
Very nice ...
Hey Brad… Iv cut thousands of lbs of those.. the Rib is my personal favorite cut
@@gordondecker6464 same here lol. In my 35+ years in the bizz I've probably eaten 1,000's of them too 😆😜
Nice....I have a Dietz no O HY-LO I'm trying to find out year it was made.
great lantern! the patent codes are on the center tube above the chimney. the last entry of patent dates will at least give you a born after date.
@@chefbirdland I have looked there don't see anything on this, it is in really great condition, is a tinned version but tinning is gone and is rust free. and the filler cap is on opposite site of little tabs to lift globe. do you have some where I can send pics?
Love the blizzard great work .. enjoyed the video and view from top is great .
@@davedavis3467 thanks dave!
I just got my Feuerhand 175 Super Baby in the mail yesterday. Painted black with red showing through in places. My tank is also painted red inside! It has a homemade wick, made out of OD Green material.
I have seen some pretty odd homemade wicks too lol. paint inside tank may be from feuerhand dipping their lanterns instead of spraying.
Looks like you've got to sift through the tat and kitsch there too! I hate it when they do bulb conversions. I see it a lot with really nice oil lamps. Never mind. All about persistence, isn't it!
@@JimsHobbiesPL I actually have a lantern lamp. A tasteful one, made with a Dietz comet. It appears to be a factory made product. I couldn't resist lol
Yes, put the “ constellation “ crown on an Air Pilot. At least you are keeping with a theme. I have used Evaporust on tools with good results.
Try brake parts cleaner instead of acetone but remember as soon as possible a little oil 3 and 1 would be better. Brake cleaner is a better solvent leaving no residue😊
@@williamfrederick3849 good to know thanks!
I notice many founts are rusting from the inside. Is there anything we can add to kerosene to prevent this?
thats an interesting issue. the kerosene should be preventing that. but sounds like you have water in your founts. kerosene is lighter than water and will sit on bottom. I'd empty them out, leave cap and burner off and let them air out a few days. wick too. good luck!
@@chefbirdland I believe what happens is that a fount partially filled with kerosene has moist air above the kerosene. In cold weather, water condenses on the inside of the fount and drips down. Water, being heavier than kerosene, sinks to the bottom of the fount and causes the bottom of the fount to rust from the inside. Well, at least it keeps us lantern tinkerers busy!.
Emburys are such great lanterns. Glad it worked out for the shelf lantern. It looks great and ready to burn. Btw, I picked up some linseed oil and I’m liking it better than the wd40. Done a few lanterns and love the look. Great video and thanks for sharing.
thanks! im glad i now have a good selection of parts to be able to do things like that. i may just build a mutant out of weird parts some day lol
So you worked quite hard there. Your decision to use the first 150 as a parts machine makes a lot of sense. Enjoyed the video.
thanks! embury's are common around here. so i didn't feel bad harvesting a few organs from it lol im sure ill need more parts from it at some point.
I prefer this type over the showy unprotected globes. Always keep one for emergencies. Ty 😊
Enjoyed this. I see these at antiques fairs in England all the time but haven't been able to pull the trigger on one yet. Watching your videos gives me a bit more confidence in case I need to do any restoration work. Keep it up!
so glad you found the videos helpful. thats why I do it!
The Feuerhand lanterns seem to be made with thicker sheet metal than most other tubular lanterns.
Just found the channel and love the lantern videos ! I just found a Van Camp N0 180 Air Pilot and I've got everything to restore it except a fuel filler cap. An ideas where I might find one of those ? looks like it is about 15/16 or 1 inch diameter.
glad you found it! thats a great lantern! made by embury. they made it with the van camp labeling. go to this website. look for an embury air pilot filler cap. lots of great resources on that site too. lanternnet.com/product-category/burners-wick-parts-founts-caps-etc-etc/railroad-lamp-parts/
Nice looking lantern…. that steak looked pretty good too!
That’s a gorgeous lantern and I usually do prefer using the old wicks as long as they are long enough and not falling apart just a quick cleaning like you did and trimmed if needed and no problems 👍
thanks ken! yeah with all the big lanterns i've found lately, i used up all my one inch! i need to stock up, i have quite a few more on deck.
Fount looks like a planetarium 😅😊
@@williamfrederick3849 haha I should stick a light bulb in it for when I can't sleep 😜
Try less rpm's on the dremmel I've had good luck even if it takes time 😊
@@williamfrederick3849 yes, my polishing work needs some, umm polishing
Ham used that style of brass cap in many of their lanterns.
Nice video !
You worked very hard on this project! I enjoyed how you went about your thinking process in tackling the issues you encountered. Very good teaching lesson for anyone wanting to resurrect these treasures of an earlier time. Appreciate your work and your posting of the videos!
thanks paul! thats why i do it. so other can feel less nervous about getting their yard sale finds or family heirlooms working and looking good again.
I have one of these lanterns I got from my late father's garage. I want to light it up after i find it a globe. I am trying to figure out when it was manufactured. Do you have any idea?
oh great! defiance triumph lanterns were made in Rochester NY. they burn great. a globe size of a Dietz d-lite or an embury air pilot would fit yours.
I like what you do my son and I watch all the time
thanks Mark! glad to know someone is watching.
Are you dana white? Your laugh just like him lol

Nice restoration on the Triumph lantern. Well done
@@paulwilson126 thanks! I was very lucky to find a parts lantern
Cool stuff and yes wow hard to believe the Embury factory was only a 1 story building I never new that Thanks for taking the time to go there 👍
thanks ken! im excited to get to Rochester and do more rooting around. more adventures to come!
@@chefbirdland 👍
Thanks for making a video of your adventures. I recently started collecting lanterns and the Embury Air Pilot is to my eye such a cool design with its art deco look. I also have two 210 Supremes’ from Embury factory, so seeing you travel to that town and checking out the factory’s original site was very cool. My wife and I moved from Dutchess County NY three years ago, so it is nice to see the turning of the season where you are. We’re not so far away though, moved to south central Pennsylvania so our autumnal leaf change occurs about a month later. Am enjoying your videos, so keep them coming!
@@paulwilson126 welcome to lantern collecting! its an addiction, but a great one. ive had lanterns since i was in the scouts as a kid but didnt get back "IN TO" it till last year. i enjoy it. its great theropy. the embury air pilot is one of my favorites. they are built like a tank! same with all the embury's. my other addiction is photography. i cant wait till the colors get rolling here! happy hunting!
Great video...I've burned mine a few times took it all apart etc. Funny thing is I never spent time figuring out the handle .. gonna check when I get home see if the handle drops down if I push them in 😅.. learn something every day. Nice looking vista
those cold blast RR lanterns are growing on me. glad i got such a nice example for my firt one. and thanks!
@chefbirdland vista grew on me because it is tubular ..old lady posted one on fb market place no paint 35 dollars. Date 1924 very clean unmarked railroad. And wife wanted a adlake but rr lanterns not my thing either
Great video, I like the calm demeanor. It’s a nice break from the scream talking one’s I have been watching lately.

thanks! flashlight vids are getting more views than expected, i will search for more for sure. glad you l;like new angle, i knew to was time for a change. picked up a great tripod at an auction, still in the box. it's a little bit of a pain changing angles on the fly but ill get used to it lol
i was waiting for the battery to go in and see it light up...
yeah, i just picked up a battery today. will do a video with 3 old flashlights to see if they work. should have it up later. a $15 battery was just not in the budget, for lights ill hardly use lol. thanks for watching
If you're worried about the paint, put some masking tape over the areas to protect it
no need. but thanks for the comment
I've got a dietz air pilot no.2 that's like brand new except for a small dent in the side of the tank and the globe is broken, I was driving down the street one day during a community clean up and someone had thrown it out by the curb...an I "adopted" it 😉
i love finding lanterns like that. thats how i started collecting!

Hello from the Lantern fb group! I thought during the war was when they started painting them due to conserving tin plated steal.

thanks. it was brutal lol
@@chefbirdland yea, that soldering under foot looked kinda tricky. Good job! Btw, how did you remove the burn marks? Acetone?
@@jasper60103 that was just burnt paint. All gone after stripping paint. Yeah that cage leg was a pain. But learned I had to dig down to total bare metal for solder to bond. I wasn't digging deep enough.
@@chefbirdland thanks for the details. I’m learning a lot.
@@jasper60103 I'm glad
It’s always the way that the last piece is dropped and lost 😂 great video I’m just resorting a lantern very similar to yours. Thanks for sharing your journey I’m definitely trying the Brasso on the silver bit now😊
haha my fumble fingers. i was so happy when the brasso worked so well on that reflector
You can find plastic polish its way different than brasso one is called "Polywatch" used for plastic watch glass and various small plastic screens, brasso only looks ok on really dirty or really scratched plastics because it's like liquid sand paper poly watch actually polishes plastic back to clear.
@@JohnChrysostom101 good to know, thanks!
Looks like a silver plated reflector to me to
Few questions .. did you always add little kerosene to the linseed oil ? .. what drummel bits you using now ..scotch bright? My brass ones constantly picking out of my cloths in skin ..need to find something better
hey dave. about a week in to using linseed i started adding a little kerosene. had more than one recommendation so i went with it. im still using the usual metal bits. tho ive never used the brass ones. just the steel ones. but i picked up a box of those abrasive buffing wheels a few weeks ago. i like them more every day. but they go fast. i just got more. i will send you the links to them. and yeah the cheap fake dremmel bits fall apart. ive actual had to have doctor remove those lil wires from my foot. im done with those.
I would not take that cap from that comet.. I have 2 of those comets they are my favorite lanterns to use...
lol i was never going to "take" it from this comet. i been looking to find a parts comet. i have 4 of them. im still looking for a crown to this day
Very nice .. Great video
thanks man
Great video and the lantern turned out very nice. I was curious about the kind of solder you use. Looks pretty thick and works well with a torch.. What gauge is it? Thanks for sharing.
thank you. solder is a 40/60, acid core. I should be using a 60/40 rosin core but i was out. the thin stuff is a pain with a torch.
Thank you for this video! I have 30+ oil lamps and have recently started getting lanterns. I know virtually Nothing about either, but love them all. I just purchased my own Embury #2 last week! It has a clear globe and needs some cleaning, but I'm hoping nothing like you've had to do. I'm such a newby, I hate to even take them apart for fear I'll end up with a parts bucket and no lantern!
welcome to collecting! the embury no.2 air pilot is a great lantern. one of my favorites! they are built very strong. i have a few videos of those on my channel. maybe they will help you figure out how to get it cleaned up and working with little effort. good luck!
