The Fastest Way To Rig in Moho
The number one question I get asked is 'How do you rig a head turn!?' and even though I keep thinking there's one million videos answering this question, I thought I'd show you my own personal process! Along with some rigging chat from a Rigging Supervisor!!! I talk about smart ways to rig, problem solving, using groups, anchor points, all the fun stuff!
Plus this is super easy for you to copy! If it's your first time using Moho, I hope this helps! I tried to time myself and it took me 8 minutes to create this head rig with left right controller from scratch! (It's simple, so I've called it Easy Mode!!)
Who am I? My name's Dani and I have been working as an animator for 15 years. I've been part of some amazing projects and had the pleasure of working for some of the world's best loved studios! Moho is my all time favourite animation software. Follow me for more Moho tutorials and animation career advice!

How To Apply Automatic Line Boils in Moho
Переглядів 7842 місяці тому
I LOVE LINE BOILS and someone at Moho must love them too!? This video is going to show you how easy it is to apply line boils to your Moho projects. A Line Boil is simply a random 'squiggle' of the animation line, caused by animators imperfections during the tracing process. It's super hilarious that this imperfection is now a 'style' I get asked to replicate often - I am sure hand drawn animat...

If you're brand new, have you tried Moho's own free course? • @mohogal
      @mohogal 26 днів тому

      It does include "limited versions of PRO features like Meshes, Curvers and Smart Bones" - if there is smart bone capability and your rig is simple, I would say absolutely! It's all about good decision making and testing. You can squeeeeze a lot out of designs with good planning :) If you have a very complicated character and really do need 360 function out of it (I would argue you don't!) then I think PRO will always be better!

    • @mohogal

      It's a reeeeeally good question that's a little hard to explain - but I want to keep each action open and operating *from* frame zero - almost as if Frame Zero is the first key. If you have KEYS on default positions, and then later move them on Zero - it can cause problems down the line - actions and smart bones can change unexpectedly on Frame 1. It's hard to illustrate in words - I strugle to explain without showing!

    • @mohogal
      @mohogal Місяць тому

      Ooooh did I not say it! To keep the vectors themselves free for art changes/problem solving! The smart bone actions driving groups allows for more control later on, passed to the animator! I don’t like having vectors tied up in actions if I can help it :)

    • @diregnome4898
      @diregnome4898 Місяць тому

      @mohogal Maybe you did say that, or I had guessed as much. But I don't see why it is better than just transforming the layer.

    • @mohogal
      @mohogal Місяць тому

      @@diregnome4898 Let's say I want to have multiple controllers in a rig. If I have two smart bone actions driving the transforms of a layer, I am going to get undesirable results when both are used. The layer will struggle to be in two places at once. If I have groups (and groups and groups in big rig cases) it leaves options for problem solving later down the line (a god send in a big pipeline) and I can have multiple functions active at once. Transforming the layer IS keeping the vectors free, I agree! But I am building more options in using groups. If you want to see a big rig, I did a Moho Webinar and talk through the Puffin Rock rigs - which shows this in more detail :D

    Hello Dani! Thank you very much for the video. I discovered your work today and it is amazing! I also saw about your course. I have a question. I see that there are many tutorials and even videos on Moho's communication channels about working with vectors. Animations are certainly more fluid and easier to do with vectors, and they take less time to produce. But my question is about the use of images in animations, of characters and items made in PSD layers, in mesh distortion and other resources within Moho that allow fluid animation of Photoshop items, for example. My illustrations are entirely bitmap images, and I would love to animate them one day. Does your course cover this type of animation? I haven't found anyone who teaches it yet. P.S. I love watching Puffin Rock with my son and I loved seeing the updates on the character rigs in your portfolio. A big hug from Brazil to you.

    • @mohogal
      @mohogal 2 місяці тому

      Hiiiii Susan, and thank you so much for your great question! And lovely words :) In my animation course - it is literally just teaching animation with provided rigs - the rigs are vector and we animate the vectors in the exercises. For all the reasons you have aready described - they are fully controllable and therefore more desirable for an industry pipeline. All the Puffin Rock main cast are made to look as lovely as possible, like a textured bitmap storybook - but they are vectors. However, there are a ton of background creatures and plants that are exclusively bitmaps. They are easy to rig and therefore fast to implement - but what you win in Time, you lose in Control. If that's a fair swap for you, no one has any right to tell you otherwise :D One of my FAVOURITE creators who works in Moho is Camila Reis: instagram.com/cammiereis/ - gorgeous, gorgeous bitmap animations!!!! She also worked on the Puffin Rock movie, and I got to meet her at Annecy this year. Definitely worth a follow. In terms of animating bitmaps - animation is animation, there are really no secret techniques, a rig is a rig. As long as the bitmaps are rigged nicely, they can be animated in the same way I teach in my course ^-^ Loads of the Moho Library characters they provide for free are bitmaps too! (There's a big rock .. monster... snake thing!!) Super impressive!!!

    • @mohogal
      @mohogal 2 місяці тому

      Thanks for your question! ❤️ It's a good question! For a fast, simple and one off rig, you can do whatever you like and find the easiest! But for big pipeline industry rigs, where changes happen all the time and I need to cater for any scenario - it is safer to keep everything working seperately to allow for maximum possiblities. I also always want things to have their own origin points (anchor points/pivot points) for problem solving later. Usually animators want to do special things. I'm always aiming for easy fixes later on! It's not gospel, but it is how I do things in industry :) I've worked on many shows, and it is definitely a trend to keep everything seperated on their own layers! Hope that makes sense, I am probably too industry-pilled at this point :D
