Witch of Blackbird Pond Book Review - 12 Days of Christmas #11
I feel bad for the people who stumble across this video. Your assessment (in addition to your contextual information) is so, so erroneous. You conflate nearly 500 years of history (there is NO "chivalry" in Beowulf, as that concept was totally unknown in England at the time of its composition), and you misunderstand basic themes of the poem. You thoroughly misunderstood that Headley's translation is not supposed to be "serious." It is a satirical look at the poem, using different scholarly approaches that are gaining traction in Beowulf studies. The opening of "Bro" should have probably given that away. The most egregious issue about this video? You present it (and yourself) as being professional and coming from a position of knowledge. You clearly paid zero attention in the class(es) where you've read Beowulf, and because of this, you should do yourself -- and the viewing public -- a favor. That favor? Sticking to what you know and understand.
Funny that you mention War and Peace and Moby Dick. I read these books in that order. Both were great, but I preferred War and Peace. W&P had great character development while Moby Dick did not. Queequeg, for example, got off to a GREAT start in the book and then goes on to get a disappointing level of subsequent development.
Reading this book now, it is very cool but very wordy. It is funny that you mentioned 20000 leaves because that is my next book.
I wanna discuss something with you please share you email or Instagram
I tried reading it a couple of years ago and couldn't get on with it at all. And then I tried a few weeks ago, and absolutely loved every word. It is unique, really beautifully written and brings in a wonderful understanding of English folklore. It is the closest thing I have read to Mervyn Peake's Titus groan (in style, not substance). If you want another take on the faerie realm, try "You Let Me In" by Camilla Bruce.
I read this when I was 12. You have Capitalism and then you have corporate greed. IE, Walmart shutting down mom and pops by buying out supplier companies or simply telling the supplier that they will not buy from them if they sell to mom and pop retailers. Look at big pharma paying millions to news networks to run commercials pushing their products and lobby government officials in government. Corporate greed lining the pockets of those officials in favor of their business models. Lockeed Martin making trillions on war and suffering. Monopoly laws were repealed to the point where they are no longer effective. Please make the distinction and not lump all who have seen the end results of equitable distribution of prosperity brought to the world by commerce. Business ethics have become foot notes of a MBA these days.
If capitalism is to improve the lives of all people in the society, the corporate companies won’t be firing left and right once they don’t meet the financial expectations of the financial year.
And yet, almost all the great industrialists, innovators and creators that are alive share the traits of Reardon and Dagney
The story of David Copperfield is the closest Dickens ever got to an autobiography.
I like the part when Rand said: "Man had no rights before individual liberty protected by law. We will find out that when individual liberty is gone, we will have no rights at all." Ohhhh wait! That was her non fiction philosophy book that we never read, or probably never knew existed. It sure was not discussed in your philosophy ciyrse (I will not correct that one because spell check tells me only "cybersex". How "progressive"), a because even if they bad mouthed it,---some would read it to see the contrast. Ayn Rand was the best philosopher who ever lived. And since abortion is a big issue again, she could in the election on, (I disagree with her on abortion, from what little I have found of her opinion. Sen thought life begins at birth, but i say it starts at inception,--------------and we should be more responsible.
Very late to this video but Yaaaaay! Congrats! 😍🥳
Regarding the title: Only if you believe you can & should run your life, better than anyone else could.
Short, and as moral as it gets. :)
If you only like certain kinds of books, it might be better to review those. What's the point in reviewing books that don't fit your preference? It's like reviewing a strawberry cake but you strongly prefer cherries.
@@carmenl163 Ah, but what if you have never tried a strawberry cake before? How do you know if you won't like it until you try it? Then you try it and share with friends that you actually prefer cherry cake. That's what I just did with this book. I have liked books in basically every genre, so why not sample as many as possible?
@@AnneEWilliamson I'm not saying you shouldn't read other books. Of course you should - how else can you find out you also like peach or chocolate cake? I just don't see the added value of reviewing other cakes from a biased cherry point of view. That's all I'm saying. My advice would be to leave the cherries out of the equation.
@@carmenl163 Well, then you would only get a biased view. Better to listen to multiple views on whether strawberry cake is good or not from people who like and dislike it, as opposed to just people who like it. With this book, I did like it, as I explained in this video, I just didn't like the ending. But another person might have hated the book but loved the ending. Or another might have hated everything or loved everything. Why not have more perspectives out there so you can decide whether to read the book, or as your allegory goes, try to strawberry cake?
@@AnneEWilliamson But that's exactly what you did, giving a biased view. You said your preference is for books that have excitement in it, where there are many ups and downs, with a certain kind of ending. So, therefore there is no point in you reviewing let's say Lev Tolstoy or Hannah Green or Virginia Woolf, because those books are not to your taste. It's not about you not liking a book, it's about you not liking it because you don't like the genre anyway.
@@carmenl163 Huh, I'm confused. While I do prefer books with happy endings, it doesn't mean I don't like books which don't follow those themes. For example, War & Peace by Leo Tolstoy is a favorite of mine, and I enjoy Virginia Woolf as well. I'm confused as to why my biased view is any less then your biased view or anyone else's biased view. We all have biases.
How long would it take to read David Copperfield?
@@stuart2010ification It really depends on how quick of a reader you are. It took me about 2 weeks, I recall, and I'm a relatively quick reader.
When I started reading this book, I thought, this whole novel be based on the mysterious events but it's very intricate and hard to digest. Especially for the non native like me. Eventually, I search for some clue, but here I listen that you were also tensed of even😂😂😂😂
There's a memoir entitled " Falling Leaves" by Adeline Yen Mah. Thanks for the video ! I'd like to read "Analects" by Confucius.
@@MeryamChiha Chinese Cinderella was a great book, but I haven't read Falling Leaves yet. Thank you for the recommendation!
@@AnneEWilliamson You're welcome ! 😊
I read the book back in the sixties. Fantastic reading, but it no longer fits to where humans are in progression. Science and philosophy are on the pinnacle of proving that all men(women) are of the same "source or call it GOD. Life doesn't,and has not always depended on the monetary system to cooperate and share goods. THIS society took on the monetary system very early in its History, and is therefore "stuck" in a money/power struggle. Money is mans creation for man. IT has NOTHING to do with life and the intention fo the Universe to ascend. THe book is good.,but its no longer relevant to this line of progression. Some will understand my comment others will think Im talking from polotics. If you get it,and understand we are not here to make money or even use it,then I commend your journey to ascension.
"Life doesn't,and has not always depended on the monetary system to cooperate and share goods." Yea, we were all poor before citizens had free enterprise in our hands to build this place form the wilderness in record time, creating civility and prosperity. The we had lobbyists, to get government favors to stop new competition (Ever hear of the Tucker car?). Now that government took every industry we built from us, and gave what we built to communism in china starting over 40 years ago. Did Henry Ford have a government partner when he built his first car? The business man that we are all taught to hate by marx, have gotten big because of their government partnerships But who else can they tell you to blame, the restaurants and basket ball makers?. Marx took over everything we built son. Now, get back to you gaming career with games that were made by communism. The book would be relevant to you if you understood that we would be much better off with individual liberty protected by law, (instead of the group warfare we are forced into as a citizenry), and free enterprise back in our hands where it started in the first place, than the growing poverty they promise us. How do I know? We did it before.
Line of progression? What exactly do you think is "progressing", because I sure see a lot of destruction of moral values, property, economy and individual liberty. What is it that communism says we are progressing with? The rate of growing poverty and proper law turned on its head? You got duped, and when you are done playing a vid game, redefine "class action law suit", get your graduating friends, and sue you school that have taught you from communism, ignoring your own liberty to think and achieve. With the "Progressive" direction we are basically forced into, you will find out later,--these were the best days of you life. Politics is the application of philosophy, with the state running the schools today. They have us thinking with our skin color and genitals,--not the mind. How is you math?
I love how your critique on pure capitalism is that it doesn't work because those capitalists are not ruthless, logic people devoid of emotion. 😂 By the way, I think the book is very palatable... as long as you skip one chapter that is 6 hour long (the speech of John Galt in the radio).
You should keep a copy of the book you're reviewing displayed on a shelf in the background.
😊 there is a Rumpelstiltskin adaptation it's in a different language it's on UA-cam sadly not with English subtitles anymore sadly I mean it used to have them but not anymore I don't know if there is any it's very hard to find it's a 2007 version it's really good it's one of my favorites especially because the prince isn't the one that in prisons the girl it's a really good version and I would really recommend it
😅 you missed the beauty and the beast adaptation there is another animated one it's a very short one it almost looks like something that Tim Burton what kind of make it's an animated one I mean there's a few like that so technically you missed a few but it's not too big of a deal just thought I'd let you know
😊😍💕 oh my gosh I don't know if you've seen this or heard of it but there is a fanfiction made of beauty and the beast that is so amazingly well-written and has cameos to the original Disney animated beauty and the beast that it's so fun to listen to it's called mirrors buy greensearcher it's really good I would totally recommend it it's so much fun to find the cameos so because they're used differently but in a good way and it's just a really good version that I totally recommend
🤔😊 if I'm being honest I would kind of like more beauty and the beast stories where we get more of the beast perspective maybe even a balance of like beasts and Bell's perspective cuz usually mostly all the time get Bell's perspective and it would be kind of nice to get more of the beasts perspective
☺️😅 so I really love beauty and the beast 1987 I don't like some other adaptations a lot better but I really do like this one I didn't even know it existed until recently but I do mean I kind of wish I could understand why the actress is voice is so interesting to say the least like I don't know why I just don't like it especially after seeing some other movies that she has made I don't know why she's so high pitched especially in the dream sequences there are a special things that I would change to make the story a lot better and flow a lot better like I specially wish she had more time with the beast and with the human side of himself but I would love to talk more about it in a video of my own
☺️ see I would love to make videos like this and describing many different versions of fairy tales that I find because there are some fairy tales I didn't even know existed and they are amazing and I would love people to know about them if they don't know I actually just want to talk about them and why I love them so much some of these fairy tales are so hard to find especially ones in a different language one of the hardest to find was a Rumpelstiltskin story that is really amazingly done and is on UA-cam but he wasn't there for a bit and there's no English version anymore it's really hard to find some fairy tales are so hard to find especially if you can't remember the names but I would love to make a video even though I'm not great at finding stuff and just talk about fairy tales because they're amazing ☺️
The characters were created to make you feel like they are real people and not just characters in a story. The story covers a vast array of human experiences that you wouldn’t necessarily be able to relate to unless you went through them yourself. Trauma, romance, violence, fear, bravery, tenacity, hope, victory, disappointment, deep bonds with unlikely people, penance, empathy. You get all of that in this book.
Dumas is pronounced Doo-Mah
Another great about Belle (2021) is the voice actress in both English and Japanese both Kylie Mcniell and Kaho Nakamura are exceptional.
2:02 - David Copperfield does not come from a poor background. They are middle to upper middle class - his mother has an inheritance, a house, and servants. It was interesting for a couple hundred pages, then started getting more and more boring as I went along. The most moving and memorable scene for me is relatively early on - when (SPOILER) ... David is a boy, being punished for biting his step-father's hand, and Peggoty is on the other side of the door, crying and trying to comfort him before he is sent away to school.
I love I Claudius-You should give Claudius the God another try.
Although the 2014 movie has good acting and graphics, I see very little love between belle and the beast. They need to show more love between the two.
Anybody know the publisher of that red edition of MB?
@@HkFinn83 Grosset and Dunlap.
@@AnneEWilliamson thank you🙏
My favorite is Panna a netvor 💓. Great video.
Quick note about #23: it seems you’ve got your Disney knockoffs crossed. Christopher Lee was in the Bevanfield animated Beauty and the Beast, not the Golden Films one you counted here, and he plays the Gaston wannabe, not Beauty’s father. Also the poster image you used was for the OTHER Golden Films Beauty and the Beast (yes, they made two different Beauty and the Beasts, and it’s just as bad).
3rd book in so far. Hoping that a majority of these books are not in some way involving Christianity.
@crystalclear6660 Avoid The Robe, Lilies of the Field, and The Singing Tree. The rest don't have obvious themes of Christianity. Though you will be hard pressed to find a classic book that does not include some Christianity, lol
Thank you for this video ! Very insightful
I hate that this is the video I first discovered you! But totally get it. Best of luck
I read this in fourth grade going into fifth grade and it took me three months. Absolutely worth it however, it's so amazing to watch a life develop before your eyes, we see someone like David overcome his flaws of naivety.
I was 12 when I read it, stole my mom’s book. So I wasn’t mature enough to understand all of it. But I still remember the basics. That to grow beyond limitations, you sometimes need to leave. Being smart is what sets you apart.

What the heck is booktube??
Oh, sweet summer child.. four stars?
I’ve been reading at 10 pages at a time which will take it a couple of months, but the slow pace allows you to appreciate the language, symbolism and metaphors
Moby Dick is a damn boring book, you cant compare it to 20.000 leagues.
The author is a narrow-minded bigot. Only worded it like this to disrespect men and peoples' love of literature. She thinks she is profound for doing so, it is all ego.
Thanks. -- Your Summary makes it possible for me to try reading AS. without being. Totaly Lost , frustated and confused. --- Studying her Interviews She Came off as being extreme right wing, Masculine and mildly Psychotic. 🗣
Read her philosophy book "Philosophy, who needs it?", no longer on YT. You will then understand how man should live. By the way, define "right wing". If it is nazi and Left is communism, (probably still the most agreed opinion), they are basically the same ideologies. But they, line many political words and phrases, have no objective definition. The definitions change over time, and over geography. This is why, when we talk with each other using these phrases and words, we don't actually know that the other guy/gal is saying (undefined works have different meanings in our heads), and our conversation becomes "unintelligible" , as we bump into each other in a political fog. Yea, I learned that from Rand too. We can see that.
right wing. =. selfish Republicans. who. want. everyone to be. Alone w/ no. help. for. elderly, disabled , children, no. student grants for college , Rich People keep. more of their. winnings. If this book exclusively followed eve’s story, it would be amazing. I kind of got bored throughout all of Charlie‘s parts. Therefore, it’s average. Enjoyable read.
I read it, liked it but yeah Dickens doesn’t offer any explanation why Dora died, & very abruptly marries Agnus not sure about the last few hundred pages.
Glad you included Panna a Netvor! Im czech and this is the best adaptation for me, grew up waitching it and I love it more than the disney version. Happy you liked it as well!
It's my favorite adaptation ❤❤ .
