Alright Anth! Agree with you mate about Cirkin. He was a massive miss last season, as was Huggins and it's good to remember the quality that Sunderland have in the squad which was unfortunately missing last season. It is interesting viewing online to see fans thoughts on their man of the match. Mayenda is viewed to being MOTM due to scoring two goals and putting in an energetic performance which is justifiable, and Rigg, Neil and Jobe are also considered MOTM which I can see because of their want to dominate the midfield and provide the free flowing football and not the side to side and back again as you mention. I think I will have to watch the game in its entirety because the reviews mention that Jobe put in a shift which was top class. To understand why Jobe was going missing last season is now obvious to me as his work rate in the Sheff Wed game shows that Le Bris might have found his strongest position of playing behind, then in front of Neil, tackling and showing strength and providing passes up to the wings and forwards. I hope this midfield position continues to work for Jobe because he didn't seem stifled in midfield. Another stand out MOTM from fans was Chris Rigg who was also outstanding and has been deemed as unplayable and immense. I'm glad Le Bris has got a headache with selection now because Browne has to return sometime soon and who do you play against Burnley, Rigg or Browne? This is fantastic news! I called the 4-0 scoreline for Sunderland and I am confident that I will call the next game also. (bet on this time). I'm going to the Burnley game and I am very optimistic. 1-0 to the lads. Keep hold fella! P

Anth, you nailed it when you said last season they had no confidence in the system. Because the (almost) same team are playing with a confident swagger. I didn't get up to follow the game but it was a nice surprise when I saw the result as I thought Wednesday would give us a tough game. The Burnley game next week will be real tough, and like you, I would take a point right now!

My guess is we'll see possibly a young loanee striker and possibly see us force a last minute move for Mendy with him being down tools, we might see a Pritchard style move as the window closes where both clubs are desperate to see something come from it. Caen won't want a down tools player on the wage sheet and Sunderland will be more willing to pay more for something when they have no time left to explore other options. Just a guess but that's how I see it playing out

Great review mate. I still think that the 4-2-3-1 formation will be played. We still have Dodds working with the players, so this is his go-to formation which seems to have worked for two seasons, but as you have rightly said, SAFC struggle and fail to break down teams that park the bus. Maybe Le Bris will change the formation, but after watching pre-season, it doesn't look like it. If this formation is still going to be used, I think only one top striker is essential to the team now, but more essential is that SAFC bring in another attacking midfielder! Fans mention that Dan Neil is a great midfielder which I don't dispute, but he is a defensive/holding midfielder. We also look to have a midfield general in Browne which might work, but we need another central attacking midfielder who scores goals, someone like Gabriel Sara who is a central midfielder and scored 13 goals for Norwich last season. Szmodics is again a central midfielder and someone who like Gabriel Sara can create and score. Szmodics would cost SAFC well over £15M mate. He scored 27 goals last season! Alan Browne scored 4 for Preston. No disrespect to Browne, but you know what I'm getting at.... It is an odd one to watch from the sidelines of fans crying out for strikers, when realistically, we are not playing the 4-4-2 formation and therefore invite other teams to park the bus. If that is the case, we all need to re-watch the 5-0 demolition of Southampton last season and take note that it was our midfielders who scored, not a striker. Even Ekwah banged in two! WE NEED EKWAH (a central midfielder) TO WAKE UP AND BANG THEM IN FOR EVERY GAME! We have quality in the team Anth, and players have to step up this season because if the formation doesn't change, or the model, will these young players ever develop? Do we really need more strikers when playing a false 9? Does Jobe deserve a start every game (again) even though we have to remember that he scored 7 goals last season, can he go deeper and be holding midfielder and Ekwah move forward? Where is Ekwah and will he become a legend? Central midfield is the issue for me, not strikers! We need goals, but were are they going to come from under a 4-2-3-1 formation?

I still have not written off the idea of us bringing in a Premiere League youth striker (with or without Mendy) before the window closes....just my thought....g'day mate lol
