Neutrality & Lebanon by Mohamad Chatah
From a panel that took place in late November 2013, with the presence of Switzerland and Austria’s then-ambassadors to Lebanon.
Including some of my father’s last words on the fundamental need for neutrality, 1701’s necessity, what neutralization actually means and how it worked (albeit briefly) in the 1950s & 60s.
We should have no role in regional war other than shielding ourselves from its rippling effects.
There are ideological voices today ranging from frustrated academics with fringe access to politics to propaganda-fuelled journalists blinded by hate that are insisting our fate should remain tied to Gaza while making their case for Hezbollah.
Ignore them.

Powerful message of the need for neutrality and a functioning state to engage in diplomacy. The ethical principle of setting your own house in order before you try to fix someone else’s is common across many cultures and religions, including the Qur’an el Kareem. It is a moral imperative. Lebanon is a pathetic failed state where people have resorted to robbing their own banks to afford a hospital bill. All that the remnant façade of Lebanese state legitimacy does is reinforce the strategic ambiguity that Hezbollah has been leveraging since God knows how long. Saad was far from perfect but at least he preserved dignity and some respect by resigning; in saying, I don’t know how to fix this problem. We’re at yet another fork in the road, and Ronnie is on to something… if a solution is not found for the Palestinian cause, as grave an injustice as it is, the Lebanese people should ask themselves this hard question.

What an effort put in verbalizing the thought without using the word 'Israel'. And this is the bottom line - as long as the mental barier of acknowledging that Israel is part of the regional mosaic is not crossed, the talk about neutrality will be held in the realm of theoretical speculation.

The Lebanese rational understanding of the damage hizb causes to their state always loses against their negative emotions towards Jews. Whatever crime hizb commits in Lebanon is pardoned immediately after a few rockets are launched against Israel. It's high time to understand what is important and what is not.

the issue with prof. Bashar's point around min. 32 on the question of double standards: the state of Israel as a concept was imposed on the Arab world by the Zionist project and the West (through colonialism and later on through unchallenged financial, political and military support). Israel is an intruder among the indigenous people of the east med and middle east. one cannot compare criticism for Israel with criticism for Syrians and Palestinians. what happened in Yarmouk belongs to the people living in this area and for them to solve it among each other. what happens with Israel is a full-fledged militarized presence that is supported by the totality of the western world and which amounts to literal bullying.

I cannot understand why people are repeating the narrative of ethnic cleansing. It is really easy to look for numbers - the data clearly shows that it was jews ethnically cleansed in arab countries, while arab population grows both inside and outside of israel. And regarding the destruction of gaza - just think that it is a massive underground military base with civilian city built on top of it. Israel from the very beginning said that it's goal is to destroy the military capability of hamas, and that is exactly what it is doing, as far as I can see.

Mischaracterisations here: - It is not the “Israel/Hamas war/conflict”. What Russia did in Syria is not “equally horrible”. What Israel is perpetrating is Genocide and Societicide. It is Jewish immigrant settler colonialism and the Zionist colonialist project to ethnically cleanse Palestine versus an anti-colonialist, anti-occupation, anti-ethnic cleansing and anti-dispossession struggle by the native population. - The use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime in the Ghouta was debunked by independent journalism and found out to be a ‘false flag operation’. - The Western countries are NOT ‘liberal democracies’. They are imperialist colonialist powers - It is not about “Western double standards “. It’s a Western imperialist war of “full spectrum dominance “ against the rest of the world

Israel is a white settler community and it is immune from prosecution or criticism by US imperial design. In anthropological terms, white settlers have tended to supported each other throughout history because they viewed themselves as bringing "civilization" to an "uncivilized humanity". The truth is that they are not actually bringing civilization to an uncivilized humanity but rather bringing genocide, destruction and systematic ethnic cleansing. One of the great hallmarks of white settler communities is their great inability to view the world around them objectively in terms of a rules-based international order.
