    G’day mate, any idea if this engine will fit in my ‘89 Spider S3?

    • @nooch86
      @nooch86 13 днів тому

      Spider is based on the 105 chassis if I'm not mistaken, less room in engine bay (from memory), i would personally go with a worked 1750, as the 105 chassis has a live rear axle that's lighter than the trans and didion tube, weight distribution would be off. But You know what, it'd be cool, so maybe just give it a go and see what happens, might waste some time though. maybe alfaholicsis a good place to ask

    If the compression is good only do valve stem seals (green for the oil burning) & cam f/seals and cam belt tensioner. Leaking Brake master cylinder can leak into the booster and get sucked into the engine. Waterpump drips when due for replacement. Big ends and main bearings are over designed. Align the propshaft perfectly to save the rubber couplings for a very long period. Change the cambelt if any signs of rubber powder is noted in the plastic cam covers. If you ever get oil in the water change the head gaskets to German type. The little oil o-ring from alfa brand fails. I always bought a spare head gasket set always handy to help other owners and as a backup. Drive the car hard it won't break if you don't do stupid. Gas shock absorbers "Bilstien for eg" is essential. Double clutches can be repacked cheaply. Use a large 24- 26 spanner to force the yoke of the thrust bearing with one arm and push the clutch housing with your other arm so that the two clutches align on the spline under the car. 2 min job. When the car gets old and 1st gear hops out, reweld and machine the curved gear selector.

      Will read your message properly later, but am getting engine fully professional rebuilt and installed. Not sure if I should rebuild transaxle cos it's a big expense.

      @grantalexandergiliomee2777 5 місяців тому

      Only work on the gearbox ìf it fails. Gtv6 only eats brake pads and propshaft couplings. 1 centre carrier bearing after 60,000 miles. I did rings once since 80s and left the engine in place. Removed sleeves upwards after properly draining, cleaning and vacuming from above. Replaced o-rings under sleeves and by using a narrow ring squeezer put the sleeves back. Don't hone too much. As I said the bottom is over designed. Whenever a job is done on the car do a oil change. Fun car to own as a daily drive. Would have been much nicer with power steering and a booster in the hydraulic clutch line though for traffic congestion and parking.

    • @nooch86
      @nooch86 5 місяців тому

      @grantalexandergiliomee2777 I'll likely install power steering from a 75 though they're getting hard to find. Do you have any experience with changes in roll centre to improve handing? Is it worth it for track use but also good on the road?

    • @grantalexandergiliomee2777
      @grantalexandergiliomee2777 5 місяців тому

      Don't lower the front much even dont. Very little. From years since late eighties the car is much more fun being able to punch it around without scratching on every speed bump. Best tires were 195/65/15 Bridgestone but not available anymore. Fitted the arches perfectly. I built a cobra chassis so I understand roll-centre. Koni adjustable or Bilstien shocks are a better investment. The latter I fitted has a lifetime manufacturers warranty. Feels like driving on Nike Sneakers. I used to burn out, slide and whatever I could. I was very careful with my 1st gtv6 and totalled it under the back of a 18 wheeler ( those days their tail lights used to fail) around 60mph tired late at night returning home. I only salvaged the engine @ 87.000 km which is still in my garage. The 2nd I hammered every day of its existence. It's buggered today after being in JHB central in traffic. Im busy fixing the heads and gearbox . 3pc Compomotive split rims make the car if you can find any FH ( mine) or CX in any condition. Email me if you want pics, tech info from Alfa documentation etc. Be brave and go electric on the power steering. The rack ball joints only have to be the same length not to get bump steer. If the f/lower a suspension sqeaks replace the nylon bushes inside but requires torsion bar disassembly. Ball peen mark all 4 to spline position before stripping. Flybraai@gmail.com #Flybraai youtube A common failure is the dual relay for the petrol pump ( diode inside) and impact switch internal ball bearing gets rusted.

      @nooch86 5 місяців тому

      @grantalexandergiliomee2777 no need to keep answering just digging for info cos want the best bang for buck. I don't assume youre all knowing lol. Any idea on the best investment to get the best possible handling within reason? Assuming maximum handling within reason. Bilsteen shocks better investment than roll centre change tick, don't lower front too much tick. Lighter 15 inch wheels better than 16 inch with lower profile, or doesnt matter too much? 7inch wide wheels I assume is fine. Why not 205 tyres rather than 195 or not much difference really? Bigger ARBs on rear to reduce understeer, or bigger ARBs front and rear? Poly bushes? Front coilover conversion worth it? Chassis stiffening worth pursing, assuming I don't want to ruin the resale, I.e strut bars or bolt in half cage, then bucket seat and harness worth it? I am going to hammer this thing so don't want to die. Remove heavy front/rear bumper to lower polar moment of inertia, or ridiculous concept for the amount of effort and diminshing returns. I just want minimal understeer. Best to just focus money on drivetrain? As it's a street car too, is shockers enough to get all the low hanging fruit and everything else just overkill? Thinking future progression aswell though if I want more performance. Thanks.
