Boosted Bryn | Revelstoked
"In all honesty, there's not much of a story to this one. I was travelling around Canada in an old Chevy 1989 van that me and the boys bought for 1800 bucks. I met up with Ben - AKA Pilchard TV - for the day in Revelstoke and we made a film. Stoked" - Boosted Bryn.
We've had this film on ice for a little while and felt like now was the perfect time to release it to the world. Bryn (Reece) is riding the Starling Swoop, our UK-made, steel-framed full suss with 27.5" wheels.
The Swoop is a RARE frame - we release them in small batches, limited order windows and made-to-order. They're only available once a year or so. If you want one, keep your eyes peeled in 2025!

Why are Starling's Headtube Gussets Like That? | Workshop Chatter

Ever wondered why Starling's frames have got those plates between the headtube and the downtube? They're called headtube gussets and they're designed to give the frame strength and control the way it flexes - it's not the only way of doing it, but it's the way Joe likes and one that's good for ride feel and looks. Here's Joe to tell you all about how mountain bike headtube gussets work, and why...

    Hitting brakes harder is affecting the suspension much more. The effect shown on the video - it could be seen only if there are no feet on the pedals. If there are - the derailleur will compensate the rearward motion of the chain.

      @joemcewan2950 Місяць тому

      To fix to headtube as well is much harder to do in manufacturing. It might add a bit more strength. But the design we use works well; we've had no head tube failures.

    I think The top length of chain isn't in tension because the wheel is moving/coasting, which provides a source of the extra links of the chain. I would assume if you brake heavily through a hard compression and your bike has geometry that has significant kickback numbers, you may feel some of it. Regardless, interesting thoughts!

    Quite simply, all the best parts of mountain biking. And none of the superfluous. I miss when the industry was 'fun'. And not all making the same 'quiver killer' trail bike in dual 29 at ~64.5 HTA with gizmos all over the bike from sandwich storage to wireless parts and 4 adjustment points that still don't land on any setting that could be described as fun. Basically, do you want a fast race bike that pedal strikes all the time or one that doesn't? Weee

  • @TeddyParker

    As a former BMXer... It feels awkward that you may have to explain gusseting steel tubing to MTBers lol. Few ways to do it but the kinda classic bicycle way Starling does it is a treat to look at. Adds a little flavor. Arguably little more fun that just adding a chunk of extra metal on the top sides and down sides as simple, modern designs do.

  • @slimdog72

    I do enjoy them. Is the gusset made out of 4130 or is it a different grade of steel?

    • @joemcewan2950
      @joemcewan2950 Місяць тому

      It's S275 steel. The strength is actually not that important. It's role is to transfer shear and all steels will do this equally well. It's failure mode would be by buckling, so again, steel type is not that important. But we've seen no failures of gussets, so the steel we use is plenty strong enough...

    Yes, it makes great sense! Thanks for this. I have a 125-140 aluminum Canyon designed to be poppy. It's my first new school bike after many years of not riding. The most important thing I learned from your video is that I don't have a bike setup for how I want to ride. I've spent a lot of time playing with sag front and back, taking notes and trying different pressures. If it's too soft, it bottoms out. It's tiring on longer rides over endless roots and rocks if it's too stiff. I live in Atlantic Canada, and our natural trails are rocky, rooty, and wet. For me, the best setup would be a bit softer to smooth out the trails for all-around trail riding and a bit longer travel to avoid bottoming out with a softer setup. At 49, I think the pop-off every hip day is mostly behind me. Found you via the Radavist. I'd really like to get a Murmur. Maybe in 2025. Cheers and thanks for the reasonable, no-bullshit bike education!

  • @tc8270

    I wont say that I can feel or cannot feel it, but the difference between his in the stand demo vs the PB slow mo is the angular momentum of the cassette. In the stand, the rear wheel is not turning so the cassette has no angular momentum, simulating a locked brake. in the PB article the rear wheels are accelerating when they hit the ground, introducing angular momentum of the cassette, and causing slack in the top of the chain. Perhaps the question should be "when" rather than "if" kickback is relevant. I can see it being relevant in high speed braking into rough sections and low speed braking on very steep descents where the chain is in a larger cog.

    It makes sense that this can exist but i think only in case of heavy travel of suspension with absoutly blocked brakes. If the cassete cannot move the chain will try to move crank, but if you have pedals/crank blocked by your feet and go with rolling wheel, i think the tension is then compensated by rotating the cassete, which you cannot feel as the wheel is spinning already..? So a very narrow windows for occurance of this i think?

    Cheers mate love this video. Great discussion and totally agree with your very practical, logical recommendations. Now, I've re-watched this a few times and there's one thing I'm struggling to understand. Even though there's an equivalent amount of rear wheel movement, isn't a 100mm spring at 25% sag going to feel softer than a 150mm spring at 17% sag due to the lower spring rate to achieve that rear wheel movement? Or is there an inherant property of the shorter spring I'm missing, maybe the 100mm spring will start to ramp up due to a progressive curve. Or do I need to stop thinking about the spring and just consider the wheel movement. I'm comparing my 150mm lyric to my 120mm sid, in my head the sid feels softer. Cheers

    • @joemcewan2950
      @joemcewan2950 3 місяці тому

      Nope, 17% of 150mm is 25mm movement, 25% of 100mm is 25mm. Therefore you need the same spring rate in both cases, so same 'firmness'.

    • @TheFatSteez
      @TheFatSteez 3 місяці тому

      @@joemcewan2950 Right. The spring rate is the "rate of force" required to move the wheel. 25mm of wheel movement requires the same rate of force. Think I get it now. Does this only apply to a linear spring and require all other things be equal e.g. leverage/frame progression?
