hopefully i will be popping in tomorrow to fix it, but i made a sculpture of a man sitting and managed to break his leg - i think i'll go for the repair rather than a do-over. my teacher managed to repair it, but then snapped the other leg off. (i have a video on my own channel of 'before the break'). the lady who does the firing suggested i use vinegar too, so....

Hi, What Slip recipe did you use on the first piece?
Are you familiar with naked raku? We have tried different variations. The one that works for us is a slip of kaolin and water combined to make a thick paste. Dip the piece quality in that and then pour a thin layer of a raku clear glaze on top. Get it in the Raku kiln quickly as the slip will start to dry and fall off. Heat up the kiln slowly at first so the slip can set. Fire only until the clear glaze starts to bubble. Do not let the glaze reach the temp the it starts to smooth out.
Great video! I’ve read a description of how raku is done, but I haven’t seen it done until now.
Thanks for watching!
All time wisdom!
Years of learning from one’s mistakes hopefully leads to a little wisdom 😉
Great video! And yes, John Foelber and Judy Adams have created a refuge from the craziness going on in the world! Foelber Pottery, in addition to everything else it provides to the community, has indeed provided a refuge since John and Judy are people of good will who have good hearts. Their kind spirits may also shine a light for us to consider that as citizens we too can try our best to single out people of good will with honest souls as leaders too, which would help a lot to achieve peace.
Love this video
Need to increase your volume. Could not hear you!
Thank you for the feedback. I made this video during the pandemic and not really knowing much about making a UA-cam video. Hope to edit this soon and show the final results too!
Beautiful studio and talented long time artists. Thank you for all that you do to make it such an exciting experience to be in your space.
Amazing.
Nice

So the color of the clay in this case is white or it will show white all the time when slip comes out?
Yes. This was a whitish clay body, but not porcelain. Porcelain would shatter from the thermal shock of being taken from the hot kiln to the metal can. In other firings we have put a colored slip on the piece at leather hard, then burnished it, then bisque fired when bone dry. The finished piece is then blue with black smoke areas from the slip that is applied before firing. Does that make sense?
@@FoelberPottery In that last case then the slip was blueish? I saw another video where they applied porcelain slip and then a glaze (80% gerstley borate - 20% nephilene syenite) and the part under the glazed turned out white and cracked and the rest black, do you think in that case is the porcelain cracking or the glaze on top? cause the black areas didn't crack... tho i don't know if they bisque the piece after the porcelain slip was applied... Thank you so much for your help! I really like the effect of the cracks but I'm not good at "letting it go" when I make a ceramic piece, and that's what raku is about 😅.
@@craftingnatura I don't have a photo of a piece with blue slip and black smoky crackles. The blue slip effect I'm talking about is applied at leather hard, before bisque so that the finished piece is blue and black, not white and black. That is different from the slip that is applied after bisque and right before the piece is put in the raku kiln. We have tried different methods to get this Naked Raku look. 1. Coating just a smooth slip made from our white stoneware clay scraps. 2. Making our own slip and coating the piece with just that. 3. Slapping a slip on the piece and coating it with a raku glaze. 4. Slapping the slip on thick. 5. Slapping the slip on thin. 6. And lots of other variations. Sorry to say, but that IS part of the Raku journey....experimenting, letting go, embracing the process, learning from and enjoying the results. Good Luck!
@@FoelberPottery Thank you for the help! I'll try my best :)
Did it work?
Yes it did!! There was one tiny hairline crack that didn’t really matter. I need to update the video and show the final result. Thanks for the reminder.
@@FoelberPottery oh yay! So happy for you. Also, that's comforting to know as I am going to attempt the same today. ❤️

The day before I watched this video I chip a pot I spent a week on. Thanks for the solution.
太漂亮了
I have a 19" tall piece that I am allowing to dry. It developed horizontal cracking about a few inches from the bottom.
Just seeing this comment now. Hope you were able to save your piece.
Sorry, I am just seeing this now. Hope you were able to save your piece.
Unfortunately I can not hear a word you are saying.
Oh no! So sorry about that. Not sure why. Perhaps the volume was not up on your device? Thank you for watching.
I remember making pots there in the '80s, with Monti playing drums in the next room. I think I may still have a piece or two hidden somewhere! I'm pretty sure I left all of my tools there when I stopped going, too! 😆
Glad you have such good memories. And thanks for the tool donation! Many students have appreciated using tools left by previous students.
Thank your for this video and these tips! Had a hard time finding a video for green ware repair. I refuse to lose another piece to my clumsy behavior!
Awesome! So glad it was helpful. Just take your time. Keep looking for cracks to develop as the vinegar dries and repeat the process as necessary until you see no cracking. Good luck!
Ur a miracle woman judy. Watching you do all the work is so nice!! Vadner
Inspirational .... I needed this about 6 years ago.
6 years ago I didn't now how to edit a 30 minute video down to 1 minute. ;-) Glad you enjoyed it.
This enchanting Music goes perfectly with the spinning wheel and with each vessel growing and getting separated from the wheel. Flashes of descriptions from your family trip to Ireland (preCovid) we’re coming into my mind; still adjusting to this pandemic life!
Exactly! With the music I channeled my Irish heritage and memories of the days when we could actually travel. Glad you enjoyed it.
I was fascinated by your video! Time flew by! Great job Foelber Pottery! I’d love to see a video with the finished piece if it’s available. What skill and patience. Thanks!
Thanks for sending the link out Foelber Pottery! Really enjoyed the visuals.

Hi! Bob was a great potter and a great teacher. I was taking class with him when he passed. Getting a feeling for how long ago it was as you are making this repair. I love your willingness to listen to Bob and help finish quite a large piece. So many parallels to the way we find solutions in everyday life. 🌸🌺🌻
