Yamaha DSR-500 FM Synth Quick Demo Jam

Just messing around with the "heavy metal" auto-accompaniment preset and a couple edited patches on this cool FM synth from 1988. Some gated reverb, chorus, and EQ was added in post.
Yamaha DSR-500 FM Synth Demo (All Preset Sounds & Rhythms)

A cool FM synth from 1988, the little brother of the DSR1000/2000. 7 parameters to edit for each voice. Only 2-operators (possibly two chips/4-op? Some confusion on this) but some sounds have some kind of detune going on to thicken them up. Interesting drum sounds, generated by FM rather than samples. Like all FM synths, effects (especially chorus/reverb) really bring this thing to life. Record...

Part 2 (Bank B Presets): bit.ly/3KoS2fT Full demonstration of the 100 Bank A presets from this interesting and rare 4 operator synth released in 1988. Got it for under $100, and even if you don't like the sounds it works great as a midi controller though I personally like a lot of them. There is a split mode and also a dual mode where you can layer and detune any two sounds from either the pres...

nice cover would you like to work with me i play keyboard
Alex G is that you??? Fr tho this is fire, funky fresh shit 😎
That's what I am talking about! Rock isn't dead. We don't have to be famous to dig a riff and sound. That's great people still write like this still... Cheers mate!
Thanks man, much appreciated and well said.. I try to capture that older rock vibe for sure.
@@alexey7459 I'd write a song with you any day
Also made some songs with this synth.
14:00 wrong frequencies used in Steel Drums
13:13 atrocious saxes. You must hear mine
8:17 Sounds like DX11's sound "Performance Pf" which I assumed was their version of a Grand. You must hear mine!
Piano on 1:32 quite good but my self pgmd Real Grand on DX11 will sound killer on the DS Series as well as on V50
Hy, what kind of distortion do you use in this sound, please ?
I have the DSR-2000 , it has 4 op. FM . To my ears DSR-500 is 2 op. Listen for example the organ voices that on 4 op. synths are very accurate.
Very cool.... That's one of my favorite Alex Lifeson guitar solos.... Good man.....
I used to use it. I remember it fondly!
Ya la situacion economica sr me hace dificil tenerlo en aquellos tiempo mucho contratos 1988❤❤❤

Any paricular drum machine on this one ?
@@tonystevenson26 On this one I layered drum sounds from different kits in GarageBand - LinnDrum/TR909/Sequential DrumTracks emulations. The fills were from the Simmons kit and cymbals from one of the acoustic sets.
80s movie soundtrack ! Nice.....
It really sounds great...i like your riffs....i had never even known about this yamaha model....is battery easy to replace ?
@@tonystevenson26 thanks, it definitely has a charm to it sound and looks-wise. I never had to open the unit when I owned it so not too sure about the battery but I’d assume it’s not too difficult.
If it's like the one i own, it is a soldered to the main board CR2032 battery
Marylyn Manson used a Yamaha RX8 in the late 80s, early 90s.
holy shit
yummy
And what are we gonna do unless there are?
Just gonna have to wait it out and hope for the best
Hey, Alexey: youtube randomly showed me this and i gotta say: good work
Thank you, much appreciated!
Pure 80s vibes, beautiful.
Nobody will ever figure out if there are giants or not, will they?
The world may never know…
Hey how you do a factory reset on that machine?
@@nicohubner7741 Sorry for the late response, you probably already found out but: Press [STOP/CONTINUE] + [+1/YES] + [-1/NO] then Power ON.
Como logras hacer funcion de arpegiador en mano izquierda.?
As far as I know, this one has the most user presets of them all! Even though it is the smaller of the family.
So cool, man!
Please make a video of the Auto-Performance features.
ABSOLUTNIE NIEZWYKŁY I fm
One of these an su10 and a djx would be a badass set up
Stereo 4op FM synths are good for pads and more tradiitonal synth souds, while the original 12bit mono DX7 are great for bass and percussive sounds, while sounding much more organic.
Hi from India.....i have this keyboard since 1989.......it still works.
DS55??
Nice sounds! I remember the first thing I liked about the synth was the design. Very cool looking instrument even today! Thanks for the demo 🙂
Sounds great! I love the 80s sounds. How would you compare it to the RX5?
@@neonpop80 Definitely less features and samples overall than the RX5 but overall has its own charm going.
Instead of sounding like earlier drum machines that were EPRIM-based, this one seems like a direct contemporary of the HR-16. Didn’t that model have a hard drive?
@@Shred_The_Weapon I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think that one did. It definitely has some unique samples I think work really well when processed.
This, I know full well,@@alexey7459. A friend of mine named Charlie Lang recorded copious home demos with an HR16 leading up to when we met in 1997 and for the following 5 to 6 years afterwards. Simply sending his through another Alesis unit, the Quadraverb II module, the usage of which worked wonders for the lo-resolution drum/percussion tones. It’s not difficult for me to imagine that if Charlie’s machine hadn’t given out on him in the early 2000s, he might still be making records with it today.
Boa noite eu sou salvador!eu gostaria de saber si vcs tem esta bateria pra venda !mto oubgdo fala cm comigo !um abraço?
As a matter of fact, there is a real demo in ROM of the synth. It is activated by turning the synth off, then pressing and holding "Start" key for rhythm and turning the synth on. It is very good demo of various instruments, and You can change instruments by typing their numbers or with "+" and "-", as well as doing fill-ins.
Sweet good to know, always wondered if there was a demo tune..
I HAD THIS ONE IN MAY 1990...GREAT TOOL AT THE HE TIME ....JUST 4 OPERATORS BUT FM SYNTHESIS...✨🤗🤗👍👍
I had one 😢
Really nice kbd
Big fan of Yamaha FM sounds, and this one reminds me of one of my first keyboards back in 1986 the Yamaha PSS-560, but that was only 2-op. These days I use a PLG100-DX board with 6-op and is a full DX-7 minus the keys.
Dude....glad you posted this, thanks. I was re-living memories of my first "studio", those were the drums, the sounds bring me back. Recorded with the RX8 for 10 years with my trusty Fostex 260 cassette 4-track back "in the day" in my first bedroom studio. Never a real doubt the drum tracks were electronic, but good design, very simple to use and to program, in many ways easier than using MIDI editor in ProTools for any e-drum plugins I've used. Absolutely "good enough" sound for sketches / demos / practice, once you get used to it. Still very useful tool, particularly for solo jammin' / recording. Even better if you got a good reverb / comp to send it to.
Cool memories man, yeah it’s a great little drum machine. Have a good handful of original songs on my channel that make use of it and does for sure sound electronic (in a that cool but cheesy late 80s way), but reverb and compression do go a long way. Actually got mine for sale on eBay/Reverb right now since I’ve had an RY20 for years that has 300 sounds instead of 49 and been using that more.
This seems like a really good drum machine! I think the sounds are very usable especially if you're into synthwave, synthpop etc. Trying to decide between this or an rx5. The price of the rx8 is attractive. Can you play the samples chromatically?
It is a really cool drum machine for the price, and yes you can set up a “multi” where any of the samples can be used and pitched across all pads.
I bought mine in the late 80s. It's really good. Have you tried using it with an expression pedal? I'm going to buy a foot-switch for it, to bypass but an expression pedal might be interesting. Do you think it would work? What sort of bypass pedal did you use?
Back when I still had it I used a cheap sustain pedal for keyboards, but I don’t see why an expression pedal wouldn’t work. Not 100% sure though..
A quick look at the MIDI implementation chart at the back of the user manual, shows it does not handle controller data. It handles Program Change data and I expect the foot switch will be for that to advance between presets.
Awesome Demo on the EMP100 Alexey, so eargasmic, I wish you could nake a demo at that SPX990 back there, I like your video, you mix so well.
Thanks man much appreciated, always liked experimenting with different tones. I might do a video on the SPX990, REX50 and the Roland DEP5 soon.
Лучший звук на ютубе в демонстрации!
Спасибо! Получилось довольно прилично, мне было всего 15, когда я это сделал
does this record?
It has a step/real-time sequencer built in the pattern mode as it's a drum machine, but it doesn't have the ability to record samples if that's what you mean.
