Rusty Dog & Co.
Приєднався 12 лис 2021
Hi guys! My name is Sara and I am a DIY enthusiast with a passion for DIY, woodworking and home improvement. I love tackling (and sharing) projects that I undertake with the help of my best bud (THE rusty dog himself...Murphy). From the ultimate practical projects to the more creative ones, I've always got something going on in the workshop to keep me busy. Over the years I've sort of become the type of person who isn't afraid to try something on my own, albeit some things I have vowed to not try again! This has allowed me to learn so much through experience and hopefully I can share some of that insight with people interested in doing things for the first time as well. Follow along on my journey as I create, build, repair, improve and hopefully inspire others to do the same!
How to Make a Tailor's Clapper | AGAIN
Three years ago I made a video about a quilting/sewing tool that I knew very little about at the time. Fast forward to today and I've now made close to 50 of these Tailor's Clappers. I feel like I have a much better understanding now of how this tool works and the best way to make it. Albeit...I'm not a quilter/sewer myself so I'm sure there are things that I might have missed when describing its function. I did my best given my lack of sewing expertise. If I missed anything important, feel free to let me know or pass it along to fellow viewers in the comment section.
I thought now would be a good time to revisit building these Tailor's Clappers and show you some of the ways in which I have upgraded the process from when I put that first video out 3 years ago. If you want to check out my original Tailor's Clapper video then I've got that linked below for you. It's a much more condensed version of the process for those short on time.

A little bit of mineral spirits will remove the paper template - no need to use painters tape
Thanks for the tip! I’ll have to try that next time. 😊
I don't think Kay needs power tools....HA HA! love that lady. You guys make a good team!
Haha no I think we have decided she better stick to just handing me the tools from now on. 😂
So it seems to prevent seams becoming unseamly when you steam seams? Sweet!
Try saying that sentence 5 times in a row. 😂
Is it really bear proof though? I was thinking of making one but friends said a bear would just RIP it apart.
That’s to be determined I guess. So far it’s kept the bear out of the trash cans but I guess we will see how long he stays out. 🤷♀️
Im in, I love your delivery and demeanor 🐲
Thanks so much! 😊
Yawn
@@Solid_Jackson you tired sweaty😂
Your mother-in-law sounds a little bossy. Just kidding 🥰
Haha well I didn’t do too well at following your instructions when ironing that seam lol. But I guess it wasn’t too bad for someone that didn’t really know what they were doing. 😂
@@brendabartocci1191 I think she sounds sweet!😂🫶
She’s the best! I’m blessed. 😊
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video, you make it look so easy! I know that must have been much more sanding than you showed
How did you know?? Did I complain about it at the end of every day or something? 😂🤷♀️
Very, VERY NICE!🫶
Thank you! 😊
Thank you! I sent you a FB Msg. & email. Wasn’t sure of the best way to reach out to you. I appreciate your time🫶
I just released another video about this Tailor's Clapper on my channel. After making this first video almost 3 years ago, I've made close to 50 of these Tailor's Clappers now so I thought it might be a good time to revisit this tool. If you want to check out that updated video then I've got it linked here: ua-cam.com/video/GaKsY7TUrU4/v-deo.html And if you're interested in adding one of these clappers to your sewing room then I have them available for purchase on my website here: www.rustydogandco.com/shop/p/tailors-clapper
Hello would you let us know what type of clamps these are and which brand please…❤️👍
Sure! These are called toggle clamps by the brand Powertech. I purchased them on Amazon. Here is the link for them: a.co/d/1RUFEls
@@rustydogandco cheers Sara you beat me to it lol Oh you deleted my link 😂
I think you're the first YT'er I've seen with a Kobalt drill! I have the drill and driver as well as a compressor and various others. I've been pretty happy with them. Cheers!
Haha really? The Kobalt Drill and Driver were some of the first tools I ever bought. I’ve got a few more now but I still use the Kobalt all the time. It’s held up well so far! 😊
Aka 'the gentle persuader'
Haha I like that! 😂
Also planers have knives not blades
Extremely pedantic.
It’s cupped not bowed 👍
Noted. Thanks. 😊
Hello Sara. In your short, I asked what the project was, and you answered. My guess, by the number of wardrobe changes, is that this took several days and making videos is not your primary job. The table looks nice to me and seems that it may be an entry way table, possibly for keys. One person that I watch is Blacktail Studio and another is Sawdust and splinters, you may like them. Have good days!
You’d be correct…the table did take me a couple of days to finish since I’m not doing it full time. Thanks for the compliment and recommendations on other woodworking channels. I have watched Blacktail Stuidos before but hadn’t heart of Sawdust and Splinters so I will have to check that out. Thanks for watching! 😊
What was the project?

Love it!🎉
Excellent!🎉❤
I was told that a curve that profiles an end is cupping.
I think I just got the terminology wrong but I basically meant a board that wasn’t completely flat haha
Thank you for this video! I have the same router and just got my circle cutter jig. I couldn't follow the instruction manual but your video made it all clear. What is your experience like using this router?
Thank you! I’m so glad you found the video helpful. I’ve had that particular Ryobi Plunge Router for several years now. I’ve used it quite a lot. It’s been able to do just about everything I’ve needed it to so far however I do see myself upgrading eventually. There is one issue that I’ve been having with it lately and that’s the locking piece for the plunging motion. It’s loose and won’t stay fully locked. The vibration causes it to move a little which can result in an uneven surface when routing. This has happened to me a couple of times. I might be able to replace the screw that holds it in place. That’s something I need to look into. It also could just be an issue with my particular router. But like I said it’s lasted me for several years of pretty heavy use at this point so I can’t really complain too much! 😊
@@rustydogandco Don't know if this might help you with the locking lever coming loose but this was suggested by another UA-camr by the name of quietwoodworking. This is what he said to do: " To fix the Plunge Lock Lever problem, remove the lever retaining screw, then take out the lever and use it like a wrench to tighten the Plunge Lock Screw until the plunge mechanism is locked securely. Now back off the lever just a little to loosen the lock screw and free the plunge (usually only about a 1/8 to 1/4 turn). Finally, put the Plunge Lock Lever back in the upright position and reinstall plunge lock lever retaining screw. This usually fixes the problem and the plunge should now lock down with only about 1/4 turn of the lever. Hope this helps. Thanks for the video!" Hope his suggestion helps.
I will certainly have to give that a try to see if it helps. Thanks so much for that info! I really appreciate it. 😊
@@rustydogandco You're welcome 🙂
Simple, effective, I like it. Curious though: what's the risk of kickbacks? Or is that why you have to have the fence at the distance from the saw as the width of the jig?
As far as I’m aware it’s low risk of kickback because you are only cutting the material that’s hanging over the edge of the jig. That’s why it’s important to set your fence the same width as the jig itself.

Love it!
Great video! I appreciate that you left in the part where the router got away from you. Good reminder that no one is perfect.
The “perfectionist” in me was disappointed in myself with that mistake but the “realist” in me knew it was worth sharing. 😆
@@rustydogandco Could've routed it out with a straight bit ,glued in a piece and re done it I suppose but i'd of left it in too. thanks for sharing.

That turned out really nice! It hides the trash cans from the bear and looks much better than seeing the trash cans setting out. Hope it keeps that pesky bear out!
Thank you! I hope so too!! 🤞🏻
That’s got to be the shortest ratchet strap I’ve ever seen! Build looks great!
Haha you are right about that! 😂
Looks closer to bomb than bear proof 😅
Dual Purpose 😂
Another great video by rusty dog
Thank you!! 😊
Love that cedar look!
Given the lack of loads, wouldn't dowels have been easier for the joints? Can't argue with the result though, it looks good!
Dowels probably would have worked fine as well. There are usually many different ways to do the same thing in woodworking…unfortunately I often forget what they are. 😂
@@rustydogandco I thought I saw you use three dowels for the legs.
Beautiful! Is there a tutorial for how you made this?
Thank you! Unfortunately no there isn’t. I built this before I had a UA-cam channel. 🤦♀️

Awesome video! Really shows how much work goes in to a smaller piece
Thank you! Cheers! 🍻
Why do you stain all the parts before putting it together
I don’t normally but I was worried that it would be difficult to stain the inside with it being such a narrow table. It might not have been but it never hurts to be prepared for the worst haha. 😆
Great job staining your wood before you join! Looks great
Thanks 👍
