Mountain Road, Performance Version
This is really the keystone tune from volume 1 of "The Fiddler's Way." Aside from bing a great melody, it really brings together many of the concepts introduced in Volume 1, including two different kinds of shuffles, rocking double stops, and left hand ornamentation.
The versions I play in the book are designed to teach these important foundational skills. However, at the end of the day, fiddle music is about making it your, too, so here's how I would play it in "performance mode." Enjoy!

Here's a classic session tune that I really enjoy playing! I hope it gets your toes tappin' and helps liven up your day! For the fiddlers out there, it's all about that "backbeat shuffle." #violinteacher #fiddle #teacherlife #fiddletunes #fiddlersway #thefiddlersway #learnfiddle #celticfiddle #fiddle #scottishfiddle #irishfiddle #violin #violinist #fiddler #teacher #fiddleteacher #violinteacher...

This is a great tune in E Dorian that also has what I call the "Mountain Road Shuffle." I can't remember when I learned this tune - that's how long I've known it. This one is popular at sessions, and for a good reason. It's a ton of fun to play, especially when you get it up to speed! #violinteacher #fiddle #teacherlife #fiddletunes #fiddlersway #thefiddlersway #learnfiddle #celticfiddle #fiddl...

I learned this tune from the playing of the great "Shetland Fiddle Diva," Catriona MacDonald. It's pretty unique, as you don't find this bouncy, syncopated rhythm very much in other styles of fiddling, and I just love playing this tune. I hope you enjoy it, whether you're trying to learn it, or just enjoying it as a listener! #violinteacher #fiddle #teacherlife #fiddletunes #fiddlersway #thefid...

In many ways Mountain Road is at the heart of "The Fiddler's Way, Volume 1." It's the culmination of many of the concepts that I cover, including 1) The Backbeat Shuffle, 2) Left-hand Rolls 2) String Crossings. In Volume 2, I plan to develop even MORE skills with this gem of a tune! #violinteacher #fiddle #teacherlife #fiddletunes #fiddlersway #thefiddlersway #learnfiddle #celticfiddle #fiddle ...

One thing I start introducing a little earlier than other violin teachers is double-stop drones (basically, playing an open drone string above or below the melody). It's a little tricky, but a lot of fun! Fail Ò Ro Mar Dh'Fhag Sinn (Fal Ò Ro, As We Departed)

Fail Ò Ro Mar Dh'Fhag Sinn (Fal Ò Ro, As We Departed), is a traditional Gàidhlig song from the outer Hebrides. More specifically, the Isle of Uist. The melody and half of the lyrics were written by Rev. Murdo MacLeod of South Uist, while the other half of the lyrics were written by Miss Kate Morrison of North Uist. The accompanying instruments are an Indian Shruti box (similar to a harmonium), ...

In France, I would say this tune was mostly played on an instrument that we call a 'Vielle à Roue" in French which is a Hurdy-Gurdy in English. I did not know about this rustic Medieval Violin (also called a 'Vielle" !). Very nice performance, bravo !
