The adventure begins! Now that we have the world, settlement, NPCs, and adventure, it is time to play. This video is longer because I spend some time giving my thoughts on solo play while I am playing. Also, I could have been better prepared! I promise I will be in the next episode. Learning as I go. We start with four zero-level characters as they start their adventuring life into the Citadel ...

#solorpg #shadowdark #ttrpg Welcome to my first video. This channel is about playing solo ttrpgs. This video is about how to build your world using Shadowdark! ShadowDark RPG Game Master's Design Kit (free): thatshowirole.itch.io/ ShadowDark RPG: www.thearcanelibrary.com/
My book arrived a couple of days ago and it’s even better than I expected! I have been reading the PDF, but for me, a physical copy is so much fun. I am really enjoying this video series of soloing ShadowDark. Your ideas are interesting. Thanks.
Enjoy the book. Great game. Thanks for the comments!
Lovin’ it. Keep it coming.
Thanks. Will do!
This is great! I really enjoy your approach to solo!
Thanks!
This is awesome! Keep it up I am learning!😊
What I love to hear. Thanks for the comment.
Great Video and interesting Adventure. I had to pause a view times to take notes. I'm about to start my Game. The Town and Map is done and the NPCs have story potential. Thanks for sharing the fun^^
Excellent! I find the NPCs can have too much story potential which makes it hard sometimes. It was an interesting adventure. Rolling random maps makes you have to be creative on how to integrate it all. I have some interesting decisions to make going forward. Thanks for watching and the comment.
Just started watching your channel this morning. It’s brilliant, I love it and your system for solo roleplaying organization is amazing. Thank you for your content. Please continue developing your channel. I m here for it.
I would take a look at your playlist. On my UA-cam app it appears to be out of order. Not sure if that’s just me.
Thanks for the compliment. I'll check the playlist. Thanks.
@@ThatsHowIRole more that it’s reversed so your latest episode is at the top of the list. If someone wanted to start the playlist at the top and just let the episodes go in order we’re going back in time. 😀
@@ThatsHowIRole also, where did you get those dice with the interesting D4?
This is great. It’s not boring watching you roll things. It gets my creativity thinking.
Thanks! I love rolling the dice and seeing where they take me.
What is the map you have on your table? Is this from a board game?
Runehammer.com It is part of his RPG Crown and Skull.
@@ThatsHowIRole Thanks!
I’m eagerly awaiting the book but I’ve managed to set up a map, a town and an adventure using the PDF between your previous video and this one. You’ve given me the confidence to have a go at it. Thank you for sharing your experience.
Go for it! And you're welcome.
Good to see you back in action! Any plans on Crown & Skull or ICrpg content?
Crown and Skull down the road, for sure. I want to stick to SD for a bit to get consistent at doing the channel. Already pre-ordered vol 2 of Crown and Skull and excited to dig into it as well.
@@ThatsHowIRole Cool! Great, solid content and thanks!
awesome message in the beginning! I gotta get started soon, lol. Great video!
Come and join the fun. As a military member myself, it is better than mandatory fun time. 😂 🫡
Well met. Giving my two obols to the algorythm.
Thanks for the offering!
First view
That was very cool to watch, but what about create the world exactly this way, but while playing? By letting everything be a surprise, you only roll the next hex and everything when you get there.
That's a great option and I do that as well. Will probably do it when with this solo group down the road when they move further out. With these first videos, it was just to get people comfortable with building a small world to get them soloing.
Running everything via hex makes it very easy to know when to roll random encounters. You could even roll the threat level for each district in town.
I agree. It makes it so much easier for me as well and it gives you town flavor for storytelling.
As an absolute beginner, I love this!
Thanks!
As someone just starting their own solo shadowdark campaign, I enjoyed seeing how you do hex generation!
Thanks. Works best for me.
Troll molars and a map of the north holds! A solo session of C&S would be cool also👍🏼
Maybe one day. It is on the list. I am a Runehammer Patreon and love all his stuff. In the next session, you will see his ShadowDark Character sheets. He is a huge inspiration and my way of showing my respect.
thanks so much for providing a link to the GM design kit
actually sooo helpful, most of DMing is just winging it unfortunately, having a systematic approach is really stress reducing
also its really interesting timing that I was combining the hexflower methods from shadowdark, mausritter, and sandbox generator this week for fun - the algorhythm has been listening to me, you're the only other person I've seen do that and you lay it out in ways I hadn't figured out yet - thanks so much
Thanks for the comment. You are basically following the path I did to create this kit. I realized it is all there in the ShadowDark book, but I didn't have a product to express it. So I created the kit. Still I work in progress. I am always open to ideas to make it better.
@@ThatsHowIRole you've basically got all I've spliced together to make the world, for the game engine I'm using pf2e because it's way easier to improv using their level stats table, and then I have a bunch of random tables on an iphone app that spit things like y/n oracle, alertness, distance, reaction, what the thing is doing, etc at me whenever I hit a single button, as well as a different app that has really good name generation for everything you can think of
I'm also going to be stealing the basic framework from a game called 'stoneshard' on steam, specifically how their contract system works and how it resets, it is really natural feeling way that they push and pull the player from town to town as contracts dry up in one town and restock in the others
Thank you so much. Your videos really motivate to solo play. Keep it up.
Thanks for the encouragement. Session two should be up this week. Getting over a cold.
@@ThatsHowIRole Then get well soon. I'm excited to see more^^
Great videos, keep it up. Like seeing the North Holds mat and the troll molars. What kind of paper are you using in your binder seems thicker than standard printer paper?
I use the ivory Parchment 65lb cardstock paper from Southworth. I get it at the local office depot
Thanks for the kit! It's going to be so helpful!
You're welcome! Enjoy!
You're welcome. Enjoy!
I tried my first session using your game masters design kit…it went great…most enjoyable solo experience to date. I personally lack the creativity to respond to prompts on the fly mid-game, and I don’t enjoy interrupting the story every few turns to consult charts and oracles. Your system eliminates a lot of the interruptions. Thank you
Glad it worked for you! I developed it for the same reason. My next video will have the ShadowDark map already filled out and ready for play!
Thanks for this series of videos. I am really enjoying it. My Shadowdark book is supposed to arrive tomorrow. I love your process.
Thanks. ShadowDark is an amazing game. Happy adventuring!
Great video once again! What I find interesting is that there is a lone town surrounded by ocean and dangerous forest/jungle. Perhaps it was once a colony of some nation across the sea?
I'm interested in finding out myself!
Very well done. Thank you for the excellent video. Looking forward to binge watching the rest of it!
Thanks for watching!
This is great and really helpful. Thank you!
You're welcome. Enjoy.
Thanks for the templates! I downloaded them. I think a journal page or section would be awesome! great videos showing how you're doing everything.
Enjoy. I am thinking of how and where I want to place them in the book.
Love the videos, can’t wait to see the rest of it. Are you modifying some of the round based rules like torch tracking and random encounters? I’m wanting to start my own but struggling with how to handle the turn tracking
For now I am. Makes it easier to streamline the session. Monsters will still attack the light. I will use random encounters when they hexcrawl. Some sessions, I will just start by rolling on the encounter table. But for now, I want to have that episodic, new adventures feel each time with a few subplots. I am not looking for a grand epic adventure, just having fun with a cast of characters. Personally, I have found starting with an epic adventure idea leads to not finishing. Maybe the next few sessions will help you decide how you like to play. Thanks for the comment.
Really cool stuff! Keep it up, please! 👊🤓 As Fred said below, thnx for your GM download!! Also, I love that map playmat. What is it?
You can get it here; www.runehammer.online/ I use the dice in the video as well. Thanks for the reply. Session two should be recorded soon!

Great Info, thanks for the GM kit..
You're welcome! Enjoy.
Downloaded your templates…I can’t wait to try…thanks
Let me know what you think after you do.
Personal preference here, maybe it'd help out a new channel! I'd prefer much more of the actual playing and less of the background, hypotheticals, personal opinions/preferences, off-the-cuff rambling. That content could be good in their own videos! I think the real gameplay starts at like 20 minutes in or something? That's quite an intro! Perhaps my opinion is unpopular, and I'm sure people will be vocal if that's the case. But that's just my first impression after stumbling upon this video!
I really appreciate your thoughts. You are correct in your assessment. I am trying to find a groove. The next one will be more streamlined. I wanted to help new people with my first one. Also, I am learning as I go. Again, thanks for commenting. I really appreciate constructive criticism.
@@ThatsHowIRole Makes sense. Thanks for the polite & prompt response!
I think the ranger needs a spiked bugbear mace ;)
I didn't think about it at the time. I probably just thought that the mace was trapped under the debris with the bugbear. However, I think there's a story to be told about why the ranger didn't have a weapon to begin with. And I think I will investigate that angle. Thanks for commenting
what is the map that you are using for your background mat to play on from? Also, enjoying your videos, thanks for putting the forms up for us to use!
It is the map from Runehammer.com and his RPG Crown and Skull. I think it makes a cool background. Thanks for the comment.
Fun adventure, thanks!
Thanks!
Loving everything so far, thanks for the constant update videos don't know how taxing this is for you, don't get burnt out! take care
Thanks! The goal is a few episodes a week. But we will see. Not really too taxing...yet. 😂
Just want to say, watching you roll a bunch of dice IS entertaining thanks to how you develop each character as you go, great series hope to see more solodark!! Also I downloaded your DM help kit, thanks for making it available!
Thanks. I don't mind watching people roll as well. You're welcome for the kit. Thanks for giving it a try.
