    Acoustic guitar player for 25 years here. I just inherited my wife's uncle's mandolin, and have had a desire to learn for years. This is a very helpful video. Now if I can just get past my "tiny fretboard/huge hands" issue, lol.

      Been playing guitar for years as well. Got a mandolin and have just been doing chromatic exercises to get used to the scale of the instrument. It is quite an adjustment when you're used to having more real estate between your fingers. I think these exercises will help. They are boring and un-musical, but they work.

      @@user-xk9md4yf9j Yeah, but he threw in some flashy licks and intros that make you feel good about your success when you play them. An ego booster, if you will. And he did it in 6 minutes. Good video for somebody seeking inspiration for his new mandolin.

    That's how you start a lesson? By intimidating folks that are learning? Makes me not want to touch my mandolin. It reminds me of how horrible that I am and feeling like I am never going to get this. Thanks anyway.

    Thanks Anthony. I enjoy your lessons. I have one recommendation: You should change your "up" "down" terminology! In music, and for all instruments, especially string instruments, "up" means "up in pitch"(frequency=vibrations per second of a note)" not the direction of your hands or fingers or how you hold the mandolin. And "down" means "down in pitch". When your hand or fingers go up the neck (towards the bridge) you are going "up" in pitch. And when you go down the fretboard (towards the headstock) you are going "down" in pitch. To refer to "up" and "down" in any other way is confusing! It's similar to being on a boat. Boaters do not refer to the "left" side or the "right" side of the boat because a listener on the boat may hear you but may not be looking at you, so he/she doesn't know whether you're facing forward (toward the Bow), or aft=backward (toward the stern), and therefore he/she doesn't know which side of the boat you are referring to. So the nautical terminology that always works is "starboard" for right and "port" for left. Thanks for understanding this, and implementing proper "up" "down" references in your next videos. Again I enjoy your videos very much.

    • @rickpick9058
      @rickpick9058 Рік тому

      Yes, he even contradicts himself about “up” and “down” the neck toward or from the bridge (about 2:52 and 3:20). Good reason to use standardized terminology! But the lesson is helpful nonetheless. Thanks for the post.

    One of the (many) problems that I seem to have is that my pick almost always seems to move between my thumb & forefinger, quite often I am still holding it but the tapered end of my oval shaped pick is between my thumb & forefinger, and I am barely even gripping it! Could it possibly be that I do not have a firm enough grip on my pick?
