That was helpful! Thank you. We are beginning our 5th year using MFW. My eldest is going to be in 4th grade. I was so excited about the new World Changers Unit that I decided to have the whole family do that, even though we just completed Exploring Countries and Cultures. I have 4 children. My other children will be in 1st and 2nd grade; and the littlest is 4, so she just pops in and out when we are schooling. Just wanted those who are exploring MFW to see how we are using the curriculum to fit our family. We take a gentle approach to history and science. They just do their math and language arts to grade level. MFW language lessons and writing give lots of chances for them to practice these skills, so the student sheets really do fit any age level. I love the flexibility of these programs. For instance, the science pages were too advanced for my crew with ECC, so we just read the books, adding in some Magic School Bus and Wild Kratts. We didn't do the student sheets for science. We set them aside so we can use them in a few years if we hit this unit again. We love MFW!

I really enjoyed this. Believe it or not, after putting a lot of effort into preparing a transcript, and none into a diploma, my daughter applied to a college that wanted a diploma, not a transcript. Sooooo - while it's generally true that the transcript is the only thing that matters - it's not ALWAYS true. (BTW, one can make a very nice diploma on Canva )

Thank you so much for sharing! This is new to me, and I have so many questions. Can you please share how to go about scheduling the curricula, as well as how you grade? How do you determine the weight to give to assignments, tests, etc? Also, how do you choose the range of the grade to give an A, for example. How do you go about grading writing assignments? Could you please consider addressing these in a video?

Thank you so much! My daughter starts 9th this year, but, because of her birthdate- she had to start late in Christian brick n mortar school for 1st & 2nd. Now, we’ve homeschooled her since 3rd grade and she’s one year ahead … took algebra 1 and freshman English last year… so this is great info so we can graduate early in Texas and start her in college early 👏. She was ecstatic when she heard this … my lil’ bookworm 😉👍

No one asks or cares if a PhD started out with a GED. It only matters if a person stops their education at that GED level. Additionally, you can have a successful military career or entrepreneurship with just A GED. So it is what you make it. Most of the children that start college and graduate early have taken the GED route. Some homeschool parents see the value in a GED instead of taking children through a bunch of fluff glasses that are not going to benefit them later in life.

May I ask why you chose to deviate from MFW for high school? We have used them pretty much exclusively for the past 2 years and really have enjoyed it. Thanks for your comment and question. I decided to switch for just this one grade because I didn't love all of the Greek Mythology that would be taught in the 9th grade curriculum. I hope to use them again for the 10th grade, though, because MFW is really terrific.

That makes total sense. We did Creation to the Greeks this year and I quit reading “The Children’s Homer” to my kids because I felt like it was just a little too much emphasis on Greek mythology. We also passed on a few of the other readings. But other than that we really enjoyed the year.
