A 250 2 stroke motocross bike would have a similar power output to today's 450 4 strokes so I'm not surprised it trounced your DR 350 , they were a decent reliable plodder but definitely no missile ! I raced the 87 YZ 250 and yes those YZ's were fast and reliable.

That bike was $2,300 new, what I paid off a dealer floor. It was the first year the prices started shooting up, and really not much more advancement. The 1986 production rule from the FIM did that. My 88 CR250 costs $3,200. I think in 85 they were about $1,700. It was the beginning of a kid not being able to afford his own bike, and the market share today is only about 1/10th of what it was in the late 70's and early 80's. Yep---all the places we rode and practiced, are all grown in. Funny how the younger generations today think the sport is doing great. But the MXGP FIM world championship races have about 15 racers on a 40 racer gate today.

It sounds good. Jetted pretty good to, (Usually more smoke on start up, all stock 2-strokes with a carb are shipped on the rich side.). Looks like a hand made pipe too, so I think the engine maybe tuned pretty good. I don't think the silencer has any packing left in it. If you can take it apart, you can use fiberglass wall insulation loosely wrapped.). He does not know how to start it very well, and after all that kicking (and filling up the bottom end with gas), it still did not smoke much when it started. I am assuming he had a good gas/oil mix. I bought one of those new in 86. That is when the price started going up, after the 1986 production rule for the USA only. The price of a bike doubled in 2 years, and tripled in 5. Looks like the rules of the 4-stroke is tripling it again.

Not the 1986s, they have more torque than a newer one though. I’d say they are close to 40. I have a 1985 yz250 and it’s bored over 0.60 and it is extremely fast and the front end pops up in just about every gear. I haven’t rode a newer yz250 so I don’t know the difference but I’d say they are close.
