A combination of “3 Blind Magpies”, “Steve Squared” and Big E, making a combined team of 7, took on the challenges set by the Kennett Brothers and Eric Westra, to whom we are indebted for these outstanding memories.
Unfortunately we lost Mark at Christchurch due to medical issues, and Carlin took a day out on day 7, to Tekapo but rejoined the team that night.
Throughout this adventure, we welcomed some solo riders into our group, such as Tim, Robbie, Andrew and Catherine.
The weather in the whole was amazing, but even when adverse it was epic, and added to the awesomeness of the challenge.

Rans S6 Door opens in flight.

Shortly after take-off, the passenger door opens. This video shows that the pressure difference in level flight above 80mph makes it very difficult to close the door from the left seat. By slowing to approx 60mph, banking toward the open door and operating flaps, the door is easily closed. The doors are designed to be openable below 60mph and VNE with doors open is 100mph. RC plane 2.2m Blackhorse Wilga 35A, 1/5 scale, powered by petrol 2 stroke NGH35, 55 cc canister muffler, xoar 20x8. Steve's Cub maiden flight

Steve Fox and his Piper Cub by "The Wings Maker". ASP 91 4-Stroke powered, it takes off with very little throttle. 13x8 prop. Very serene in the air on fly-bys and good to wheel-land as opposed to 3-point. Engine sounds just perfect. Next job - fit the cowl.

Tom's Funtana, Maiden Flight. CRRC26 power. Initial run-in was hampered by a dodgey spark plug. This was replaced. However suspicions were cast over the reliability of the ignition module. Is this why the engine quit at the end?

This looks at the attachment of the wings to the fuselage. First I traced the chordwise position of the spars from the plan and checked the relative position of the brackets on the fuselage against this. Acceptable positions. OS GT 33 inside Airsail Auster Cowl

The OS GT 33 engine is supposedly a low profile engine and muffler combination. However the muffler is boxy at the front and worse, the cap head screws protrude from the muffler. Airsail Auster Cowl 3

Here, the cowl is planked. The first image shows the relative heights of the cowl ring, the C3/N5 section and F1. You'll see F1 is higher. Instructions say tapered planks from 13mm to 10mm but it became obvious after the first few that the taper should be about 2:1. So I then cut them 20mm narrowing to 10mm at the front. Here's the cowl, rough-shaped, prior to planking the top. I used a razor-saw to cut the corners off prior to sanding round. Final shaping and sanding will happen after the planking is fitted, glassed and the ABS front is applied.
