I've been building a large flat bottom boat for about 5 years.
This is the first time it's not covered by a tent.
I also cover how to cover your 3d-prints in brass.

metal polish + electric toothbrush?
Переглядів 3772 роки тому
I wanted to make a power sander for those hard-to-reach places. I realized that an electric toothbrush gets me very close. This may come in handy cleaning the lines of 3D prints or getting a model ready to accept paint. The polishing pad is an extra bonus. Is this something you might find useful? I'd love to hear about it!

      @miormedia I'm just finishing the hull. But I'm moving quick at this pace I expect to be done with all the big stuff by the end of Oct. I bought a console for it so I didn't have to make one. I'm on a deadline. I have an annual trip where I meet guys out on an island. Usually I take my small boat but I haven't done maintenance on it in 5 years and it needs some structural repairs. To do that I need to split the upper and lower halves of the hull. Could it make it fine? Probably but it's only slightly more work to finish the big boat. My trip is Dec 6 thru 8th. So I got to move steady and I'll have at least a sea worthy rough draft version to use.

    Hi, nice boat and project. Lots of progress. One question: What is your purpose of having so much open deck rather than making the enclosed space (cabin) larger?

    • @miormedia
      @miormedia 13 днів тому

      Kind words, thanks! and a great question! Boating most of my life I put a great deal of thought into what I want. At least what I think I want. A cabin were I don't have to crawl anywhere. A cabin that I can walk around. It's so frustrating when you can't reach every part of your gunwale in harsh weather. An open deck is worth so much more then cabin space to me. I want to sleep in the cabin and steer from the cabin when it's raining. The big open deck can be modified to accommodate any situation. Lot's of comfy seating or even a full sized camping tent if needed. I've realized over that my needs change all the time. With this configuration I have a lot of options. Luckily I also think aft cabin boats look nice. Everyone is different, this is just me. Thanks for watching!

    Sir Is there any pictures of how you did the bottom of the first boat? And if there is then is there anyway you would be willing to share them and send them to me? I'm just doing the exact same thing you did to the first boat and I'm trying to decide on how I'm gonna go about doing it. Thank you.

    • @miormedia
      @miormedia Місяць тому

      Cool! The first boat wasn't very well documented. I cut away the bottom with an angle-grinder. Put the top part of the hull the right side up on a flat surface coated in mould release. Then I simply did a glasfiber lamination against that surface and overlapping the hull around 20 centimeters. It did not turn out pretty but it worked very well. Talking to other boat owners on the lake, not a single person ever noticed that half of the hull was missing:) Good luck! I hope to see pictures/videos!

      @adamtedder1012 Місяць тому

      @miormedia thanks for getting back. I have half been thinking of doing it that way myself. Way, I see it. I can do it a number of ways that will work, especially since the boat was headed for the junk yard. Since it was essentially a free junk hull, nothing I do is gonna make it worse.

    There is a rule of thumb; take the smallest boat you like, and buy one a foot shorter. That last one will become the boat you will use the most. Well, I guess sometimes you just have to build a larger one. Very nice video, I was a bit fearfull in the beginning of the video that this would be one of those amaturistic videos about an amaturistic boat but it turns out to be not at all. I quite like the idea principle, the boats lines but above all that its apearence is in balance. Not build clumsy but also not too fancy. Just an honnest boat, like those fishing vessels. Many happy sailinghours!!

    It'd be great to sail a 40ft live-aboard boat [w/bow center board] with a hull so thick/resilient i could crash over any rocks [under 12knots] without sinking/severely damaging the boat.i'd just carry a dingy/big anchor/winch and drag myself off of whatever i might get beached on. my thought was having 15 cheap, 10" diameter detachable [bolted laterally], treated logs as a sturdy bottom set below durable 6" of foam as a hull. ... essentially ... a solar sailing barge with an powerful electric motor. .... OR ... Rig sails [cabin et al] on a WW2 (LCVP) Landing Craft - Higgins Boat ... ua-cam.com/video/hde7OVJKdgg/v-deo.html

      I'm not sure what you would call it. It's one of the most common sidings in the Scandinavian countries. Spruce planks with a two inch "lid". It's treated with ferrous sulfate. Gives it a weathered look and keeps moss and algies away to some extent.
