ALL THOSE SYSTEMS - Can You Pick Your Favorite?
I had the wonderful opportunity to try out a bunch of Firing Systems these past months. Before I send them back to their homes, I thought I'd do a quick side-by-side video of some of their basic features.

Any tips how to load the spray can that is easier then pure muscle ??
How many flame machines can be controlled by a single dmx-512 controller?
In theory, there is no specific limit - depending on how you assign channels in the DMX Universe. However, some more basic understanding of DMX is probably needed. Each DMX device uses a number of channels. Some may only use two channels, but others may use nineteen or more. Unless the controller is limited, a single DMX Universe can control 512 individual channels. So if you wanted individual control of each device, you would have to assign them different channels. But if you wanted all the devices to be the same you just set them to the sam channel - much like what I did in this video. The left two were both on Channel 1 and 2 and the right two were both on channel 10 and 11. Or you could put them all on the same channel. Then it becomes a question of cable length and signal strength.
@@ignite9550 oh ok thanks :) That really helps a lot.
I have this same machine, however I can’t even get the cans to seal and not get them to fire. Using the same fuel type you have. Is there a trick to installing the cans?
I can’t get Mine to Fire either. Do I need the DMX machine?
I'll try to post something soon, but it appears many of the cans have changed their nozzle diameter - the straw has gotten smaller. Some people have swapped out the o-rings on the solenoids.
My goodness, that was fantastic. The imagination to orchestrate something like that is awesome. Subscribed, looking forward to future productions. Hopefully I can learn a thing or two.
Thanks very much for the nice comment. Yep, that was a bit of a unique one, but was a lot of fun. Hoping to have some fun intro next year - there is some IOUs from this year :)
Amazing as always! Great editing everything with the highlights
REALLY well done!!!!!
Thanks! I'm glad it made an impression... and I"m glad to see your channel growing more and more.
Cool❤🎉
Thank you!
Awesome show Ken! Appreciate you sharing pictures of your setup at the end. It's giving me ideas of other ways of doing my own setup. What are the little orange connectors in your wiring? Are those splices? It looks like you're running series on your tubed shells
Thanks and I'm glad you like the extra pictures. I always enjoy seeing some of others setups. Yes, I had many of the consumer shells/canisters wired in series. In The Blue Waltz ending there were 94 Pyroland Weapons of Warfare Nishiki canisters fired in flights of 2s, 3s, and 5s. Those connectors are a bit of a love/hate issue. They are 3M Scotchlok or UY2 splice connectors. They are designed for stiffer wire - phone line/doorbell. Typically the igniter wires are a bit too soft to poke into the gel cap and to where the blade presses across the wires , so you have to check continuity on every connection you make.
Sir!!! Those wheels were the bomb. Great show.
Thanks - It did turn out OK, but it was a bit of work . FYI, the eight shorter ones were theses: ua-cam.com/video/Tcoiq90Y61c/v-deo.html
@@ignite9550 I used two-way hot wheel which was similar to those. That larger wheel really stood out. Was it handmade?
@@jefffannin1980 The middle wheels were from Spirit of 76 SE435 Silver Wheel. They were flanked by Dominator "i-wheels" I'm not sure if they are made any more. And then there were 4 Meg Fortune Wheels ua-cam.com/video/LtBYEvZoYco/v-deo.htmlsi=Va67nsu48EZOZI4U
Ken, what was the comet look with a tail at 3:18 never seen that before. Seems like you had a lot of them. Great show! Ended up watching it a few times and have a few ideas for my notebook
Looks like Sky Comet by Pyro Planet. I used them in my show this year.
@@jefffannin1980 found it thank you
Glad you liked the show and I like it provides some ideas. @ExtremeCrewFL and @jeffannim1980, Yes they were Sky Comet by Pyro Planet. I used 4 of them. one each on the left and right positions and two in the center. To align with the music I pulled some of the fuses and fired groups of rows separately. The last row has typical breaks and those were shot separately during the song; e.g., 4:48
That was incredible! LOVE the wheels and tourbillions section and the ending was perfect. Brilliant display!
Thank you for the comment!! I'm relieved people are liking the wheel and tourbillon section - I had some second thoughts about it. I really wanted to do a wheel section, but it felt a bit out of place for some reason. Hey, at least it all worked...... Well 17 of the 18 wheels. On one, the quick match blew off the visco too quickly.
Beautiful. Well done!!!
Excellent show as always bro!!
Thanks Paul! There are some things I would have liked to do a bit different, but we had a good time!
Awesome Video and timing !!
Thank you for putting this video together. You gave some really great information.
At least it wasn't Katy Perry "Firework"!
🤣 --- So true!!!
This is possibly the best show compilation I have seen to date. Absolutely Amazing!
Thanks for the kind comment. it was a lot of fun... we'll see what happens this year :)
What flame machines did you use or prefer? Thanks in advance.
The three on each side are the cheap-o e-bay units. Some are labeled "Spray the Fire" The center one is a MOKA FX unit. here are the cheap-o ones in action with some testing I did: ua-cam.com/video/ClJKKvBQBoA/v-deo.htmlsi=U9w2rMBNtFUPV4GB
Have you found that one brand of fluid being better than others when used in this application? Duration? Cost? Pressure?
That was kind of the idea, with using different brands, but it turns out they were manufactured in the same location. For the most part, I haven't noticed any difference between 11oz can brands, but I not done any additional testing. I suppose there is variations in filling at the manufacture and we probably need to watch out for shrinkflation these days. I wouldn't be surprised if the cans volumes start getting smaller.
@@ignite9550 Right. But in my shop experience in using such chemicals, it's not really about the volume itself of the can, but the brand can make a big difference in duration and pressure (height). Even QC plays a factor. You're only showing two brands and there are many more out there. I'd even go to say more prevalent brands used by auto techs. Was just curious because I'll be in that fire spraying arena pretty soon! Appreciate your insight buddy. Solid stuff. You're the FireTEK spokesman aren't ya?
@@hangar4avs There certainly can be differences, but I think this gives you a good idea of what you can do. Just don't push it to the limit. FWIW, I have been typically using using the Walmart Super Tech brand due to cost, but I have used many of the other brands - other than CRC which is typically twice the price at retail. One issue that has come up lately is that some of the straws are different diameters and the smaller ones won't seal against the o-rings at the solenoids and it doesn't seem to be brand specific - based on last year. Anyways, I hope it was helpful and I do like my fireTEK system 😁
@@ignite9550 Wow. I never thought of that. Straw differences! lol FireTEK is nice for sure. Laurian hooked me up with a system. Fantastic guy with immediate support. We talked about you a bit as well. :) Thanks for your help bud.
Thanks for the demo pyro. I subbed.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the sub. What system are you most interested in?
@@ignite9550 I have a cheap 4 cue and a couple ignite modules. I think I'll get the cobra next!
What are your mixed feelings about using a laptop for Mongoose?
It really comes down to the inconvenience of lugging the laptop around with the extra antenna and the concern that most laptops may not run very long on battery power when I know some of my controllers can run for hours. There are a handful of shoots I've done with fiends and with clubs where were are out in a farm field or up on a plateau where we are not running generators or where it is quite cold, so it is nice to just walk out with the handheld remote and fire the show or segment. Also some of the testing I do for my backyard shows would be a bit more complicated if I was lugging a laptop around - examples: Line Rockets: ua-cam.com/video/Wj50XJ8Wf2c/v-deo.htmlsi=wo5TJOZ0x4QIrI4g fireballs: ua-cam.com/video/rZPe4CuiFHs/v-deo.htmlsi=j-Fh-bXk6bC8AKy4 Spectroscopy: ua-cam.com/video/NzhYCzedQh4/v-deo.htmlsi=3f0SiuqI6iUFK71p
Dope
Really great review! We use Cobra
Thanks for commenting and I'm glad you enjoyed the review. In your "Show Reel" video, I liked how you incorporated the image/video projection onto the "super heart" during the shows.
Mongoose can utilize 12,240 cues on one system, not 6,120.
Yeah, Don pointed that out. My bad. When doing math I only counted one rail, not both. There should be a correction that shows up in the right top corner
So which one do you personally use?
I have a couple systems - but here is my go to for my backyard shows: ua-cam.com/video/rZPe4CuiFHs/v-deo.htmlsi=57Y0qiTRr-qoUIg6 (my one handed fireball setup and test). What system do you use or are you considering using?
This is amazing!
Thanks - glad you enjoyed it!!!!
what are those black plastic pieces hold the tubes down on the board at 24:35?
Those were devices I 3D printed to hold tubes from 200g cakes I tore down. They were used for many of the patterns shot like this one here: 6:50.
Great job. Very entertaining show!!!! Can't wait to see your others
Thanks for the comment and I'm glad you found it entertaining. It turned out pretty good this year. Need to start working on 2024 soon !!!
Think I might buy my first firing system this year. Thanks for the video.
Glad you liked the video. Jump in and give it a try.
I need one of these to hook up to a propane tank. I would be using it for a home Halloween haunt and don’t want to be constantly going out to change cans.
Do be careful. We set these up well away from people and have them on a larger base board for stability. Audience is behind a rope so even if they were to fall sideways, the flame is far away from anyeon. I have seen people modify these for propane. They remove the valve going into the solenoid and have had to change or make their own nozzles. Also, propane won't give you the same type of flame - propane out of a 20lb tank is a bit more "softer". Also with propane and hoses, you have the potential for leaks and fires - as have happened on even some high end equipment. ua-cam.com/video/un9mC3_cxGE/v-deo.htmlsi=-YLQnMJ5Ltl3pkhB
@@ignite9550 thanks for the info. People don’t get to walk through my haunt (yard) due to too many cords laying in the grass and don’t want anyone tripping. And trick or treaters only have one path to walk to get their candy.
This is too cool!
Thanks - keep up the great Pyro podcasts: rhythmpyro.podbean.com/
what flame machines are they?
they are various brands of generic DMX machines you can find on ebay - some are labeled "Spray with Fire"
I just got around to watching this. Ken, I always love your displays! Well vetted and edited music with good variety and excellent pyro choreography! I also loved your patriotic interlude. All good stuff, brother!
Thank you pyro brother. Your comments mean a lot. We keep learning and trying new things. A lot of the audience really appreciate that patriotic interlude, too. And it provides a nice little break.
Beautiful show. Probably months of planning. Great job 👏
Thank you for the kind comment. I"m glad you enjoyed it. It was a bit of work - but all came together in the end.
Dude, this is an amazingly well done show. This is how I want my shows to look. Do you happen to have a list of the shells and mines, etc... that you used in the show. I'm trying to play out my show for next 4th and it would be extremely helpful to know what type of things you were using here. I'm using a bilscone system so everything is pushing buttons, but we had a nice little display on labor day for the family. thanks in advance for any help.
Thanks for the great comment. As for the single shots - those are pretty straight forward ; e.g., white glitter comet, gold comet, yellow slice, etc. As for consumer items, the end of the video shows most of the product. I used a lot of Nishiki Weapons of Warfare canisters from Pyroland and their Love Potion No.9 NOAB. I had Winda Silent Power a few times. I like strobing effects so I had lots of the Dominator Mammoth Strobes through a number of the segments - all picked up from Fireworks Forever. And in the 3rd Segment I used tons of the Opps All Cherries ball shells from Pyroland. And most of the canisters in the last segment were Red, White, and Blue 5in from Dominator.
WOW! Beautifully Done
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad it was enjoyable.
good job, i’m also trying to make something like this for a school project, but i made it like a reel with 2 plastic wheels to put on the cable, and i will use sugar and potassium nitrate mix as fuel
Thanks for the comment. I hope the school project goes well. If you post it in youtube, come back and share the link.
Ken, do you know of any freeware or shareware video editing programs that might do this?
Blender is an open source fee application. I was using it years ago - powerful, but not user friendly IMO. I'd suspect it has similar features, but not sure
Absolutely awesome. Great job..I will see if I can do this on Shotcut.
Thanks. Please do reply back if it works on Shortcut
COOL!
hopefully some find this useful and create some cool images
Super cool! I’ve had to rely on folks in the audience for pictures since my camera is recording the video. I’ll give this a shot.
... and you have had some pretty stellar long-exposure photos from your shoots. My jealousy is what got me looking into this - LOL
Good tips. After space invaders your audio faded noticeably.
Thanks. hopefully some find it helpful. yeah, I went back and although I normalized all the clips, it does fade off a bit. I guess that is what I get for letting my mind wander off to 1978 space invaders - LOL.
That’s really great information. I don’t edit my own show … no time but I’ll forwarding the details to our editor. Thanks for the great tutorial and info … I’ll be putting in a request for next year Already starting on next year show and more excited about next year than I was this year
Thanks for taking the time to provide a comment. I"m glad it was helpful. Hmmm, I might need to find an editor :) . I look forward to seeing shows next year. I liked the opening of the show this year with The Fire and the Fury.
@@ignite9550 I can’t take all the credit for the opener Ed help me a lot and was kind enough to show me a lot of techniques he uses. Between your shows, Ed’s, Ricks, I believe I found my own look which is a good mix, plus the layering I like to do. My goal is to add another 288 cues for next year giving me 504 to play with. The level of show am looking to do I need to double my fire power.
