Here is my first short video in the Forest of Bowland, my local AONB and somewhere I ride classic bikes often. Narrow, often quiet roads and stunning wild scenery at any time of year. This ride is on a 1955 Ariel NH 350cc that has just returned to the road after some engine part replacements and needs running in.

    I had one as a teen and loved it. Very good off-road too as it was so light; Devon green lanes were my favourite place to ride..

      @classicrider5274 Рік тому

      I also rode one as a teenager in the 70s and it’s the reason I wanted to restore and ride some in later life. Never, intentionally tried mine off road but agree that they are light. I was riding the country lanes in Surrey back in the day. Thanks for watching!

    Does it go up hills ? 😊 my velosolex does not like hills

    • @classicrider5274
      @classicrider5274 Рік тому

      Yes, it does go up hills. The engine speed drops fairly quickly when you start climbing but it keeps pulling once it drops to a lower level. If it really struggles, it’s possible to add some LPA or light pedal assistance! Small engines need to be in really good condition to go up hills so my bike had a new cylinder barrel and piston which gave it good compression. Thank you for watching!

      Glad you enjoyed the ride, it was a Mountain Cub but with slightly raised overall gearing, although first and second are both quite low and close together, with bigger spacing to third and top. A nice lightweight classic bike and spares are easy to get.

    Started so easily nice looking bike and built to last . Had two NSU's back in the 70's (N and L or was it N and S ? ) memory fading a bit now! I remember them being ultra reliable, excellent mpg and fun to ride. Other than the odd plug and gear oil change never needed anything major. Happy days!

    • @classicrider5274
      @classicrider5274 Рік тому

      Thanks for looking. The models were N and S I think. N was basic and S had more enclosed mudguards, both were two speed and as you said a decent machine to get people around without costing much to run. My first restoration in the mid 1970s was a 3 speed Quickly, rebuilt in best friends fathers garage. We skimmed the head with glass sheet and grinding paste and re sprayed it with aerosols from local car accessory shop in closest colours we could find. It kept going for a year until we could move on to a bigger bike. Great times and probably not something the current generation of teenagers would dream of doing.

      Totally agree with you, the engineering and general quality is very good for a bike like this and better than many others. They survived thrashing by 16 year olds in the 70s when we got our hands on them as well. Just became old fashioned looking when the Japanese bikes appeared.

    • @classicrider5274
      @classicrider5274 2 роки тому

      It all depends on what you are trying to achieve and how long you are prepared to take. I bought the bike as a project many years ago, it needed complete restoration. I slowly gathered the parts I wanted to get it back to fairly original condition, I could choose which parts to buy when the price was reasonable. I got the engine completed first and then arranged the painting, which I received back just before the first covid lockdown and this was the point I really started to get things put together. So, it all depends on what work you can do rather than subcontract out and how long you are prepared to allow the project to run without loosing enthusiasm to finish it.

    • @johnmullen1955
      @johnmullen1955 3 роки тому

      @@classicrider5274 I know the area very well though it took me a while to twig. I find my T90 vibrates quite a bit especially at speed having said that it is dead easy to start and stop and very reliable however mine leaks oil like like nobodys business from around the pushrod tubes and I have never managed to cure it. I would not like to ride mine at anything much above 60 mph despite it supposedly being good for 90. what do you think.. Was it you I saw at the top of Cow Ark sat on a bench admiring the Hodder valley.I think youwere on a Tiger Cub? just curious

    • @classicrider5274
      @classicrider5274 3 роки тому

      I spend a fair amount of time checking to make sure the amount of crush of the seals is correct for each push rod tube. I bought a selection of seals and use the most appropriate thickness to suit. I have owned a Tiger Cub and you will find it in my other videos but sold it some years ago so if you saw someone recently, not me although sitting and taking in the view does sound familiar.
