I know I'm 3 yrs late finding this video but you asked does this happen all the time. As an ex rider, the question is not when do you get hurt, it is how bad you get hurt, because you will get hurt every ride.

You feel the same way about bull riding as I do about those dudes that put on wing suits and glide around at 100+ mph.

And... deaths? There's only been 1 death on the field in the history of the sport - in the 100+ years of the professional League. And the dude paralyzed in the pre-season game (thanks to Jack The Assassin Tatum). Long-term consequences though? Look up Antonio Brown's hit and his personality chage that happened afterwards.

The basic rule is so long as it doesn't hit the head or something done deliberately to injure, it's legal. Wrestling moves? Not legal. Being hit in the chest by a dude 2 meters tall, weighing 114 kilograms, and traveling 20 miles per hour in a straight line? It just looks like these hits, sometimes.

Rugby is a rough sport but the rules are a little different in regard to hits and rugby players rarely get the separation where they run right at each other full speed.

The reason it's called Football is because that was what Rugby was called when it was introduced to the states. Collage students took Rugby (football) and made changes to fit how they wanted to play it. Same reason why we call football, Soccer, since that is what it was called when it was introduced to us.

Coming to this vid super late, but since this was made, a lot of those hits would now be illegal. The NFL added two fouls - illegal blindside block and contacting a defenseless receiver. So, if you're running with the ball you can still get smoked, but you can't light up a receiver that is in process of catching a ball thrown to them, and you can't level a player without the ball that doesn't see you coming. The big wicked hits where the player can see you coming for them are still largely legal. Cheers from Colorado, USA!

Barry was built like a fire hydrant and was exceptionally quick. His top end speed wasn't exceptional, but as you saw, he could hit that speed in a matter of a few steps. With his low center of gravity, thick powerful legs, and insane quickness he was just a nightmare to try to tackle, especially 1 on 1.

The vast majority of hits in here are legal in the sport. The face mask is not and there are a few blocks in the back that wouldn't be, but almost every other hit is fine. You absolutely do not have to wrap for the tackle to be legal.
