As a kid, I was a crew member on the 72 foot Alden gaff rigged Schooner "Salee" in San Pedro, CA. On her I learned how to sail. What a fantastic boat!

Pure and simple beauty and grace. The essence of a sailing boat.

I stripped and painted a 43ft Colvin Gazelle inside and out. Then reconfiguration of the head, main cabin, adding new water tanks, all new electrical with instruments, all new rigging (galvanized 1x7 wire, parcelled and served). Two and a half full time summers in the Chicago area, plus time in spring and fall both years. By full time I mean 8+ hours a day 7 days a week. It was a tremendous effort - and not all of it was perfect. And I did not touch the engine. You had your work cut out for you! Excellent work! I want to know how the composting head works out. We put one on our Peterson 34 racing boat that we used on a couple Chicago to Mackinaw Island races. Did not work well in rough weather, as urine can easily get into the compost area, and then all stinking hell breaks lose. The only redeeming feature is the head can easily be removed and placed on the dock outside the boat when you get to a marina, which does not endear you to your dock neighbors.

It's a shame that so many classic wooden boats are just left to rot like that... I'm doing my part with my derelict Tahiti ketch. I just wish there were more like me willing to take these vessels on as total DIY projects without much care about how long it might take or how much it might cost.

Alden boats are the most beautiful boats. I looked at one, it was too damaged to repair. Broke my heart.

Особая благодарочка автору за сьёмку перехода от, относительно, спокойной погоды в предштормовую. Волшебно смотрелся бы солнечный свет проходящий сквозь бирюзу воды, при крене парусника, в иллюминатор и отражение его бликов на мебели каюты. И всё это под Pink Floyd,- фантастическая романтика свободы !!! В You Tube есть видео, где "MALABAR X" заходит в марину под легендарный Pink Floyd. С меня лайк, подписка. Развивай тему.

Reminds me of Captain Ray Williamson owner of Maine Windjammer Cruises whom I had the pleasure to meet some 10 years ago in the port of Salvador da Bahia, inviting him to be my guest during the local regata João das Botas in the All Saints Bay on board of my Saveiro de Vela de Içar É DA VIDA. In return he kindly invited me to a trip on board of one of his beautiful historic schooners but unfortunately till today I didn't make it! If someone who knows him reads my comment please say hi to him on behalf of Gustavo.

I bought my schooner (Windolee) because of Malibar, when she was in Chicago during the 50s. Nice filming. A boat lover filming an absolute fantastic schooner. Just subscribed … what took me so long? Sailing into Stock Island, right?
