Fern's magic doesn't have character in the sense that it is completely basic and utilitarian. She fights only with the most common basic attack and defense magic that all mages know, nothing unique to her like the other mages are using.

I think Fern's combat magic "not having a shred of character" during a fight just means that it's very utilitarian, just focused on defeating the enemy. She was trained by Frieren, who developed her skills killing demons. More "modern" mages developed their skills during a time of relative peace (even if things have started being less peaceful again after Himmel's death). So they might be more focused on other things, like spells that look impressive to potential employers or spells that can merely incapacitate an opponent. If you look at Fern fighting, she generally also looks very emotionless, kind of like a terminator, only focused on finishing the fight. Both Fern and Frieren do focus on other spells too, but during combat, their spells are all just basic attack and defense spells, no frills. Also, sorry if some of the fandom can be mean or overwhelming at times, I hope they don't ruin the experience for you! ❤

"Ge" in chinese means "older brother". And "Gege" have the same meaning, but "gege" more close and if you read some chinese novel, "gege" is often used for lovers or to flirt lmao. I love "gege" =DDDDDDDDDDDD

So someone mentioned this already but San Lang means “third son” but it’s rlly similar in pronunciation to “husband” in mandarin. Since the language works differently than English and relies on tones, just one tone being off can change the meaning of a word or sentence even. So it having a similar pronunciation to “husband” makes it almost sound like Xie Lian is calling San Lang husband. This is OCCASIONALLY the case with certain English words like “threw” and “through” where u would need to rely on context to identify which one ur hearing otherwise u could get them mixed up if ur just hearing them since they sound the same lol. This is why I love mandarin tho, it’s so nuanced and words often have deeper meanings and just more to them than anything in the English language.

So in the subtitles they make Hua Cheng refer to Xie Lian as his name, but in reality he’s saying “Gege” pronounced “guh-guh” in mandarin, which is like the Korean “oppa” or the Japanese “oniichan” but more flirtatious, but it technically means something like “older brother”, it’s often not used to ur older brother tho, just anyone u respect and love that u would usually consider superior to u, usually someone older since people respect their elders. But it doesn’t have to just be someone older, it could be someone ur age but that u respect more just like u would respect an elder more if that makes sense. It’s way more nuanced than any English translation of the word and can be used in a lovey-dubey way but that’s still slick. So it’s a way for Hua Cheng to get away with being cutesey and flirtatious with Xie Lian without anyone being able to say anything abt it because his excuse could be that it can be used for anyone as a sign of respect and admiration. So the nuance of the word helps him be slick with it lol. I hope this made sense!!

There’s definitely a reason they all recognize eachother but I won’t say anything 🤣 but for Hua Cheng specifically, no one knows what he truly looks like, but the one thing known about him is he always wears red. Since he’s already appeared with Xie Lian once, they’re suspicious of this random guy in red who’s with him now. And to be fair….he IS dangerous 😂 they have a right to be suspicious. Also sorry to tell you but these four are always chaotic together so don’t get your hopes up they’re gonna get along anytime soon 😂 The sandstorm scene with Hualian is just 💕 lives in my head rent free. Just wait till next episode I like MDZS as well but it’s an entirely different love story and feeling compared to TGCF, and all the characters are completely different. I’m personally obsessed with TGCF ❤️

Idk if anyone already said that but Hua Cheng has that complicated expression on his face when zie lian touches him, because he feels bad when he’s being touched by Xie lian. That’s also the reason he pulled his hand away when xie lian prevented him from falling off the cart in the other episode (the reason why he feels bad about it will be revealed in the novel later on, I believe)

Btw, the name of Xie Lian's spiritual ribbon/bandage is Ruoye (idk how to write the english pronunciation)

Gege is like Oppa in Korea, but it can used by man or woman if you notice Wei Ying also called Lan Zhan like that in eps 3, more specifically Lan er Ge, (when he want LZ attention in the beginning of library scene) which means Second Brother Lan, in this episode he just call him that but in the novel and audio drama (even in the bts of the LA drama), Wei Ying often called him Lan Er Gege, especially after they were in a relationship

Gege literally means "older brother." When used for someone other than your literal brother, it's friendly, informal, even flirtatious.

Don't worry about going back to rewatch 🤗 especially if you haven't read the subtitles as they can be too quick to read at once 😅 so go back as much as you need and want (for the hualian scenes 😂 cuz same!)

I think James Cheek also had issues to get "gege" through to English dub, idk it seems like gege is used in Chinese as intimate word too. Like courtesans can call you gege, your students apparently can mock you and call you gege.. idk xD in Erha, for example, Chu Wanning is called Immortal-gege by his disciple xD

Actually, Hua Cheng always calls Xie Lian "gege" all the time. It's kind of like "oniichan" in Chinese, a cute and sweet way to call a guy older than you. The "ge" or "gege" used to call older brother in real life, but "gege" is less common (cuz it kinda turns into a couple things). So you know hehe...🥴

I know it's confusing, honestly reading the book is easier to understand but the story itself throws us in without any context about life before Wei Wuxian died and we discover it little by little,This is what makes writing wonderful because we have the result but knowing the process is what kills the reader By the way, I usually recommend reading the novel first and then watching the animation, but I understand that for reactions it's better to watch something than to read I will be supporting you and I hope you read the novel later because there were many changes for the animation adaptation and even the romance in the book is much more explicit this also goes for tgcf to be honest
