1 Year Special: What I Would Would Do Differently in 2025 (BLOOPERS)
This week's video is a different video "Anniversary Special: What I Would Do Differently on UA-cam in 2025 with Bloopers".
Welcome to the @Economese channel where together we will learn the language of money and wealth.
#financialeducation #financialfreedom #retirement #financialplanning
From a humble beginning in January 2024 to this incredible milestone, it's been an unforgettable journey. In this special video, we take you through an inspiring story that started all the way back in 1993, with my career as a financial planner.
For over 30 years, I helped individuals and families achieve their financial dreams.
Then, in 2024, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and create a UA-cam channel dedicated to financial education, personal finance, coaching, empowerment, and a little bit of entertainment.
This video is packed with exciting moments, from a montage of highlights from our video library to hilarious behind-the-scenes bloopers that’ll make you laugh out loud. I’ll also share the highs and lows of our first year on UA-cam, reflecting on everything that went right-and what went hilariously wrong.
What’s in this video:
1️⃣ My origin story: From a 1993 career launch to becoming a creator in 2024.
2️⃣ A walk down memory lane with clips from our most popular videos.
3️⃣ 6 things I would do differently on UA-cam in 2025: Actionable tips for aspiring creators that I wish I knew when I started.
4️⃣ The power of learning from your mistakes-and laughing at them!
5️⃣ My heartfelt gratitude to YOU, the community that made this dream a reality.
This video is not just a celebration; it’s also a roadmap for new creators looking to start their journey in 2025. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just dreaming about starting a channel, there’s something here to inspire you.
Thank you for being part of this journey. Here’s to another year of growth, learning, and creating content that makes a difference!

    Many congratulations on your 1st year. I have really enjoyed your informative videos. Perhaps you could do a video on methods, tips and tricks where you could retire earlier. Although they say life expectancy has increased, but all I've seen lately people either getting ill earlier in life or sadly passing away, with thousands not having been spent. A great book I read recently was die with zero. Keep up the good work

    Congratulations on the first year. Looking forward to seeing your upcoming videos. I have a topic suggestion. Now that i have retired the realization has hit that saving up was the easy bit to some extent. It required some thought but more importantly consistency of saving/investing but time/compounding did the heavy lifting. The much hard part i'm finding is moving from a saving to a spending mind set. I have a budget, i know how much i have and what my investments return typically. I'd say i'm on top of things but i'm finding really hard to actually shift to a mindset where i can see my investments go down as i spend (i know that was the whole point of saving/investing in the first place). Not really sure how to get over this mindset issue.

      Hi John, thank you or your comment and for supporting the channel. New arrivals do not automatically get qualifying years towards their state pension. Although it does appear that they are getting more automatic support than our most vulnerable. Wealthier pensioners may get less state pension but this will always be an issue when benefits are means tested - as with the winter fuel allowance. Please keep watching and subscribe as the next video is an anniversary special. 😀

    UK is not particularly high tax relatively speaking, many countries have higher gdp per capita than uk but also have higher taxation (eg France, Germany, Austria, Finland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg)

    • @Economese
      @Economese 3 дні тому

      Hi, Agreed. But it the tax burden is the highest since 1948 but without a noticeable improvement in our daily way of life. Infrastructure, motorways, potholes, council efficieny, Government departments, education and schools etc etc. I am not against paying higher taxes if there is a benefit to the UK people which means less should go abroad for the foreseeable future until we get back on a more positive economic footing. All the best as always. 😀

    The budget hasn’t been great but you must note that the past 2 week’s government bonds have increased significantly globally because of US Jobs report, tariff uncertainty etc it’s definitely not just a UK thing, and to be fair, it was already worse in the UK than many countries when the tories left

      Hi Alistair, thank you again for your comment and for supporting the channel. You're right that there is a lot of global uncertainty. Ironically and paradoxically, when there is uncetainty investors will but US treasuries, which will lower the yield. Their spending is utterly out of control and Elon may only oput a dent in the deficit. The UK is not as powerful and our gilt yields are higher than our European peers and rising twice as fast in some cases (Times). The Bank Of England is deliberately driving the UK economy into recession, the quantitative tightening the are imposing is not necessary at this time as we have a real net positive interest rate of around 3%, almost unprecedented in UK economic history, which is great for bankers. The BoE are selling bonds back to the private sector that will be worth less than they bought them for, driving interest rates up. Bankers will be the beneficiaries of this profit, when the money is then sucked back out of the private sector, thus reducing growth and increasing the payback cost for the government, who are obsessed with balancing the books for no reason. The overall effect of this is enormous pressure on Rachel Reeves to impose austerity. Rachel Reeves has the power to stop this, but she is either unaware or just scared of banks and rich people. This is dire for the UK economy, we must stop the bankers.

    So just explain to me again how taxes stimulate economic growth ? And explain to me when taking more money from the wealth generators, giving them less money, how that stimulates growth ? I'll accept if the governnent are 50% of gdp and they spend it on the tax payer but they don't. They send it abroad and waste it on eco communist vanity projects. They don't build schools, control the borders or fix the roads. I'll also add inflation is cumulative.. so it's 2.6% on top of the 10% per year for the last 4 years. So prices are up 50% at least and going higher.

Has there been a material imporvement of anything since COVID when debt to GDP was closer to 60%? madness indeed. I am retiring at the end of this year at aged 65. I have enough money invested to be able to do what I want to do for the rest of my life. I am also lucky that I get a very good navy pension for the rest of my life. My wife and I love our holidays and we do a lot already; my current wage helps pay for that. When I no longer get my wage, I will start using my investments/personal pension until I get my state pension in May 27. I will likely stop investing any more. My wife gets her state pension and a small other pension as well. We also have no debt. So, while we can, it will be even more holidays paid in part by my investments and pensions rather than my wage and pensions. I am currently reading Bill Perkin's book 'Die With Zero'!

    Well explained. It's going to get a whole lot worse. Will the PM sack the Chancellor? Oh well. Hope she is having a pleasant trip to China. Hi Cornish, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel. It has got worse since the video was recorded with the 10yr gilt rising, but inflation fell slightly and GDP expanded by 0.07%!!!! Some growth. I heard the Chancellow was looking to slash benefits as well to save money but that has been rejected by the High Court. Apparently, she has the full confidence of the PM and she will be ther "for years". problem is, who would replace her? I remember the 70's and having to turn lights off in every room and 83% - YES 83% - higher rate income tax PLUS 15% tax on investment = 98% potential tax charge. In the meantime, our debt servicing has increased to £104 billion annually. Please like and subscribe and our next video is an anniversary special.

      Hi Dar, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel. You can contribute 100% of your earnings into a pension to a maximum of £60,000 gross from all sources. So if you earn the average UK wage of £35K, the most you can contribute is £35K gross including tax relief. If you use salary sacrifice through a workplace pension scheme you need to make sure that your salary does not go below the National Minimum Wage so check with yor HR Department or Payroll. Hi James, I hope you are well and keeping warm! As a general rule 70% of your income is something to aim for as there shouldn't be any commuting or mortgage costs. With a total income including interest from savings, assets and private pension, of around that of £67k, but having to also financially support 3 adult children. I’d no way say we’re rich… but by being careful and somewhat frugal when it’s called for, we do live comfortably. No new cars on the drive for the last 7 years for instance, in fact no new cars at all before, just 2-3 old ones. Even when we had a combined income of £140k up to 2022, because we were putting much of it away towards retirement, I’d say we didn’t feel rich then either, just more comfortable. For instance if anything broke down or needed replacing such as white goods, we could just go ahead and not worry about it. But there was no room for extravagance without incurring debt.

      Hi Piner, thank you for yor comment and for supporting the channel and for sharing your insights. I agree. Over time my wife and I have become more comfortable but at no point would we consider oursleves wealthy despite meeting the 10% threshold. One emotion I am keen to put forward in the videos is the fear of spending our money in retirement, or working too long to enjoy the money. At 56 years old I have some way to go before retirement but we are programmed to save, save, save and not to spend it. In fact, most pensioners only spend 20% of their capital after 20 years in retirement!!! Please keep watching and subscribe as the next video is about a Recession in 2025 😬

    • @Piner5074

      @ I agree, but we all have different financial situations moving forward… What I didn’t make clear in my comment is that all three of my adult children have ASD, so my wife and I have committed to trying to (within the inheritance threshold) leave as much as we can so they can hopefully live independently more easily) hence saving every penny we could. We both retired early, myself at 56, and my wife at 58, so that amount I stated is before the state pension, we we don’t yet qualify for (and dependant on any pension reform in which it may or may not be means tested, may never qualify for - who knows). I’m happy and content with our level of income, in fact because we’re no longer putting away the extra, our spending lifestyle isn’t much different than before, we just need to be a bit more mindful.

    Great video. One thing. With pensions being IHT from April 27, I can see those who plan their pension pulling back and reducing what they would have put into their pensions. maybe paying the tax on income and investing elsewhere rather than their pensions

    • @JamesKerr-z4o
      @JamesKerr-z4o 15 днів тому

      I still think pensions are worth investing in to pass on, after all if you are a higher rate tax payer you get 40% tax relief when paying in. This has decades of growth with the government’s 40% tax relief. Then if you die with more than a million per couple, the tax changes will take 40% back. Just think about the growth that has occurred in the pension because of the 40% tax relief going in. It’d still leave more than if you invested in an ISA, and passed this on.

    • @philipwood123
      @philipwood123 15 днів тому

      @JamesKerr-z4o yes but a pension will likely be doubled taxed. Iht and income tax and tappered iht relief potentially. I think planning outside alongside a pension is going to be more and more important

    • @JamesKerr-z4o
      @JamesKerr-z4o 15 днів тому

      @@philipwood123 run the numbers for yourself, for me it is still worth it, especially if the money gets 40% tax on death and 20% when taken as a pension. If children are taking a pension and paying 40% on withdrawal it’s less clear.

    • @JamesKerr-z4o
      @JamesKerr-z4o 15 днів тому

      Let’s use Simple numbers, and assume all of this is taxed under IHT. If you pay into an ISA £12k a year, you could put £20k into a pension getting 40% tax relief of £8k. You do this for 20 years assuming 0% growth and the ISA is worth £240k and the pension is worth £400k. Let’s take off IHT on both at 40%, The ISA loses 40% which is £96k, the pension loses 40% which is £160k so the ISA is now worth £144k and the pension is worth £240k. If you assume the pension gets taxed at 20% on drawdown then pension is worth a total £192 and the ISA gave only £144k. If you factor in growth the pension grows even more.

    • @philipwood123
      @philipwood123 15 днів тому

      @JamesKerr-z4o in that small scale example yes the pension is better. But a more realistic example probably not. Isa and pension can grow at same rate if invested similarly so that is a null factor. Try a decent amount. Say 1 million. Also a pension and isa combo is a better strategy overall. Lastly over 2 million you start to lose the 0% tax allowance on the pension. So probably a strategy of both isa and pension (40% income taxed only) and withdrawing the tax free pension allowance ASAP and place into the isa over many years is worth doing

      Hi John, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel. The state pension is a contributory benefit under the Social Security Contributions and Benefits Act 1992. Eligibility criteria was 44 years (man) and 39 years (woman), then 30 years and now 35 years for both. The state pension age was 60, then 65, 66, 67, soon to be 68 and beyond. Pensions can be means-tested as they currently cost £125 billion annually. Most of the world is in population decline so for every 100 people there will be just 35 grandchildren. When they grow up they will have to pay a lot more tax for pensions and healthcare as we all get older. Please keep watching and subscribe :-)

I doubt the triple lock system - whilst well-intentioned - was fully costed to current levels. I have a navy pension, which will be my main income when I retire next year at 65. I also have a small civil service pension. These 2 x sources of income will be my main incomes, plus my wife's pensions, and will provide us with enough to live on plus holidays/entertainment etc before my state pension kicks in in May 27. I do have a private pension as well, which will be around £50,000 at age 65 in Oct 25. Having listening to this video and doing other research, I am leaning towards FAD. I won't need to draw on it at age 65 so intend to leave it there, including the 25% tax free and use it to say buy a car when we need to and any other emergencies. I also have lots of other investments such as a stocks and shares ISA worth about £100,000. In your opinion, is it best to take money from my ISA/other investments before my private pension or the other way around. Another question - I am a bit confused with the difference between FAD & UFPLS. They seem similar to me.

    • @Economese
      @Economese 17 днів тому

      Hi KJ, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel. Well done on preparing so well for you retirement and having lots of options to pick from. As a general rule, using the ISA first is better as all withdrawals are income tax-free. A pension allows 25% tax-free to be withdrawn. FAD is basically where you take your 25% tax-free cash as a larger lump sum and then all further withdrawals are taxable. Some providers allow you to take your tax-free cash in smaller chunks rather than taking it all at once. UFPLS allows you take smaller ad-hoc lump sums which are 25% tax-free and 75% taxable. For example a £10,000 withdrawal would be £2500 tax free and £7500 taxable. The balance of the fund will remain invested. Put simply, FAD allows 25% of the total fund to be taken tax-free whereas UFPLS allows 25% of the ad-hoc withdrawal to be taken tax-free. Please keep watching and subscribe ;-) Good luck and let me know how you get on 💪

    Hi, thank you for this - very insightful - please could I pose a question? Your previous video on means testing the state pension effectively explained the hurdles any government would need overcome - and these were so significant that outright means testing seems highly unlikely. This video however looks at the more subtle and nuanced means testing of the triple lock, which would have less barriers and would therefore be more viable - I’m not sure if there is a straightforward way of this being introduced though and whether a straightforward downgrading of the cap is more likely?

    • @Economese
      @Economese 20 днів тому

      Hi Heather, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel. means testing the state pension would be difficult to administer and it could be political destruction and it would further create division in society. It is easier to increase the state pension age. However, applying inflation busting rises to the state pension is increasing the cost and it would be easier to scrap it and just focus on a CPI inflation rise each year so the state pension holds its value and is not eroded over time. The Personal Allowance is frozen until 2028 so it is highly likely that all pensioners will pay income tax on their state pension which is already a form of means testing as the HMRC will collect more taxes. Child benefit, the personal allowance and IHT are already means tested with certain thresholds and can disappear completely. The WInter Fuel Allowance was another means tested benefit which affected 10m pensioners. Please keep watching and subscribe :-) Happy New Year.

    The UK state pension is one of the lowest out there! The problem is how the government spend OUR money. The issue is amount of people sick and not contributing, the immigration and pressure this puts on infrastructure. I could go on. We need to get away from penalising people who have made sacrifices and tried to provide for their future. If you earn more in retirement, you pay more tax in retirement, so means testing is not the way forward in my humble opinion. Im always aghast at how the cost of the state pension is communicated; as though pensioners are a burden, having had the audacity to have continued to live beyond a state designated date. Couple this with the fact that a person who reaches that designated date, and having contributed the required level of contributions the same state lays down as required to receive a modest stipend in order that see out the last 15 - 20% or so of existence without needing to work, they appear to be burdened with the blame for this cost. Many think NI is simply a payment for their pensions which it is not. @Economese 20 днів тому

      Hi Jackie, thank you for your comment and for supporting the channel.It’s true that the requirements for the State Pension have changed over the years. Previously, you needed 44 years of National Insurance contributions (for men) and 39 years (for women) to qualify for a full Basic State Pension. This changed to 30 years in 2010 and later to 35 years with the introduction of the new State Pension in 2016. So, while you're right about the higher contribution requirements in the past, the current system has a different set of rules. Regarding who funds the pensions, today’s system is similar to when you worked: current workers’ contributions fund today’s retirees under the "pay-as-you-go" system. There are complex factors for the reasons the system is not working which is why it needs a drastic rethinking which might be beyond politician's capability and capacity.
