Mercedes w109/108. Under Rear Seat Frame Access.
In this video I switch my attention to the rear under seat area. First I have to remove the sound deadening material to enable me to see the various spot welds that need to be removed to gain access. The dog leg beam that ties the under seat box section to the inner rocker is in good shape. But there are areas close by that need new metal welded in. This is a perfect example of how you need to go deep to carry out certain repairs.

MERCEDES W109/108 INNER ROCKER END CAP FABRICATION
Переглядів 54514 днів тому
Now that the main section of the inner rocker is welded in I need to fabricate the end cap. This is a pretty easy thing to make using craft paper. if you mess up cut another piece until you get it right, it takes any guess work out of it.
MERCEDES W108/W109. WELDING IN THE INNER ROCKER
Переглядів 47621 день тому
In this video I finally weld in the inner rocker repair panel that I've been fabricating. Overall it wasn't too bad, except for a few adjustments on the way it went well. This now gives me a solid reference point to continue on repairing the area before fitting the new floor pans.
MERCEDES W108/W109/W113/W111. AVOID SUBFRAME FAILURE
Переглядів 585Місяць тому
I decided to make a pair of cover plates to protect the main mounting bolt on the front subframe. As you can see in the video, if left unattended it can lead to severe bolt corrosion. This is not only a pain to repair if they snap, but its also a safety concern. There's no way to know the condition without removing them. There's also a plastic cover that is still available from Mercedes. Howeve...

MERCEDES W109 FLOORPAN REPLACEMENT PART3 (INNER ROCKER)
Переглядів 6542 місяці тому
In this episode I show the inner rocker section that will be used in the repair. Its a piece of 16 gauge steel to match the original thickness. Inner rockers are not available, so that means making your own. It's not a complex piece to make. The only difficult bit is making the bend as it's a very strong piece. This could probably be done for you at a local metal shop that has a break and dies ...

I got another mention! I look forward to the video. Thanks for the hard work on the videos, John.
Hi Allen. Hope to have it done sometime this Month. Happy New Year. Cheers John
Great job. 👍 Did you know that the W109 body was produced as a short W108 and then cut up and 10cm of sheet metal inserted?
Yes. That extension can be easily spotted in various areas. From the rear doors to the floor pan and trans tunnel. It actually gave me a great join area for the rocker repair. Cheers John.
So where the gawd-awful patch was, do you think this section had rusted away earlier and that was the reason for the patch? Or would it have been from a collision?
Hi Joe. No evidence of collision damage, just lazy repairs. The person that worked on this car before had a habit of slapping a patch over rust just to hide it. I've been systematically removing them and repairing properly
@ you certainly have your hands full!!
Hi John. Hope you had a good Xmas. Yes, motivation can be a problem. I got really poorly in 2019, which seems like yesterday in some ways, and stopped work on my car. I lost all momentum, and it took ages for me to get motivated again. A bit at a time is the only way, and if you get one of those days where every little job seems to turn to sh*t, walk away and come back to it with a fresh mindset. It'll still be there! On a subject of the spot weld drilling, I guess, like me, you favour the mini hole saw type of drill with the sprung centre pin? The main downfall being that centre pin. I bought a load of small (either 1.5 or 2mm, can't just remember now) HSS drill bits (you break a few, and packs of 10 are pretty cheap) and drilled right through all the spot welds. The centre pin can't slip or drift, and you can often work it so that your plug weld fills up the small hole. Also, it enables you to tilt the cutter slightly so that you get an even cut depth in awkward places.
Hi Bob. I think a motivation video would be a good New Year upload. We had an old saying back in the UK at the Restoration shop I apprenticed at. "Do what's on the bench" Its very applicable to lots of different work or situations. helps keep the focus. Good idea on drilling the smaller one straight through. That little hole would weld up easy. I found the same tilting the drill in different directions to make sure its cut the top piece. Cheers John.
Dear John! Excellent, THIS is the structure where these cars "die". Except one is willing and able to repair the section where 3-4 sheets kiss each other. The biggest and weakest structural point of the W110,11,12,13,08,09; where the whole rear of the cars is fixed to the front. You cannot save the car unless this section has been checked (and repaired). My deepest respect. RIP ...3478😢.....
Thanks Oliver. This is the worst area of the whole car. With a little planning it'll be fine. 3478? Was that your earlier 6.3? This one is 4445:) Cheers John.
Excellent!🐞
Thank you! Cheers John.
Wow. Too much.
Once you get stuck in its not too bad. Cheers John.
Love ur vids John
Thanks Harry!
Hi! Thank you a lot for the great videos on the W108! I have a quick question of my own, if that's ok. I own a W108 280 SE with the M130 injection engine. It starts and drives alright but as it nears 80 degrees celsius, it will begin to hesitate and kind of lurch forwards and backwards on acceleration, sometimes quite violently. I thought it was as simple as the MFI going lean near operating temperature, but if I richen up the mixture (as a debugging measure, just by lengthening the injection rod), it'll drive fine for 10-15 minutes and then it'll go too rich. Does the above sound like a mixture or ignition issue? I feel like it must be mixture since it drives pretty well for 5 minutes or so, or until it hits 80 degrees celsius. Then it'll run on kangaroo fuel for 15 minutes or so - but it'll actually clear up and drive fine after that! Very weird. Still uses points, but TI. Thanks!
Hi Jack. I suspect the Warm running device. I don't myself have a lot of experience with the pump as it's always run so well on my 280se. But I did a quick search and found a couple of links that may help. www.peachparts.com/shopforum/vintage-mercedes-forum/359490-280se-m130-warm-running-issues.html Also this one www.sl113.org/forums/index.php?topic=2730.0 Also come join us on Mercedes Maintenance on Facebook. John, looking good, still watching down in Mississippi 👌
@arcijack Thank you!! Lots more to come:) Happy New year mate. Cheers John.
Nice work as always John. I always click the like button first because I know you will never leave anything that isn't 100% right and proper. Have a great Xmas.
I appreciate that Bob! Happy Holidays to you. Lots more to come:) Cheers John.
Beautiful work John. Happy holidays 🎄
Thank you Tony. Happy Holidays. Good Luck with that SL. Cheers John
Merry Christmas, John
Happy Christmas Allen! Cheers John.
Neat work, happy holidays☘
Thank you Happy Holidays. Cheers John.
Happy Holidays to you and yours ! Thanks for the videos .
Thank You Nick! Happy Holidays to you too. Cheers John.
Hi John! I am not sure about your intensions but the template does not look like the original....to me. Cheers, Oliver
Hi Oliver. It what way? Are you referring to the crease. It is there on the original, just difficult to see with thick underseal on. Also the tabs will be ground down to match size etc. Hope you're doing well. Looking forward to hearing about your 6.3 build. Cheers John 🍻
Get that tooth looked at!
I did Allen. Had it pulled. Then a bone graph. Had a nice day on the couch watching movies with the Dogs while on powerful pain killers. 😄
Coming along nicely John!!
Hi Chris. I'm happy with it. This side of the car is the biggest challenge, once it's fixed just a few other areas and I'm done with welding. Thankfully the upper body is 99% perfect. Cheers John 🍻
When do you sleep, John?
😄 Everyday very well. Dreams tend to be automotive related. Can't think why?? 😄 🤣
Wow, I got a mention! I do think talking about how to stay motivated and keeping a project moving along, regardless of the pace, would be valuable. There are a lot of garages around the country with disassembled cars in them that started out as enthusiastic projects that people have given up on due to burnout or feeling overwhelmed.
I wish I could be doing this very thing to my 300sel, I am in Reno NV and the rockers on my project are looking pretty sad...
We're Practically neighbor's. I'm in Grass Valley:) Do you have a 3.5 or 6.3? Cheers John.
@@mercedesmaintenance.6339 I have a 6.3, got it 2023, haven't tried to run it yet! Also have a 108 and one r107. Would love to connect at some point, have a great day!
Nice job John. That is going to be super strong with all those extra plates.
Thanks Bob. Yes I think it will be nice and strong. The welds went well. As much heat as possible to get good penetration. Now it gives me a great solid reference point to build from. Cheers John.
I totally like this way you cleaned it. Have to do the inletmanifold of my M116. It has been sitting since 2001. Corroded. Not really dirty. Did you clearcoat it later straight on the casting?
Clear coating after cleaning would help, but I haven't and probably won't. Personally I'm not looking for perfection, I like an engine bay that looks tidy but at the same time obviously in use. Cheers John
How much did it go for?
Unfortunately it did not reach reserve. I'm going to re list in the spring. Its a great car. With the new top and seats it really stands out. Cheers John.
Astonishing amount of work you have had to do on this body, John. I know it is fun for you but have you gotten discouraged at all with this particular car?
Hi Allen. It certainly is a massive amount of work. But to answer your question. No I'm not discouraged, The situation is one of balance. I work full time and also have other cars I maintain. Mercedes and unfortunately a modern VW that belongs to my Wife. That car is discouraging. HAHA for sure. But to the project car. I genuinely Love the challenge. The different aspects of a restoration I find very interesting. I think with a project of this size it helps to have a vision/goal. That I have, but also the most important thing by far is patience. I'm use to very long term projects in my work and know that it can be monotonous at times, but also very rewarding. Also it gives me the opportunity to chat with many other enthusiasts and meet some too. Along with that it gives me an almost endless amount of potential content for the channel. Then general life stuff can take me out of the shop. There's a long list of house projects that need my attention. Hope you stay tuned. What I can guarantee is there's lots more to come:) All the best Cheers John
@mercedesmaintenance.6339 I will stay tuned! I think you talking about avoiding discouragement would be a valuable video in itself.
@@AllenManor You've read my mind. I will definitely be doing something along those lines. I Appreciate your comments Allen. All the best Cheers John.

Lucky guy that you can choose between two engines. 😎 But even on a german Autobahn I have no issues to drive 100mph with my M130. But yes, its loud. 😁 Btw: I changed my rear axle from 3,92 to 3,46 so the RPM is 10% lower now and I dont have to shift so often in the city.
I actually love revving that m130 up there. Its a great engine! That axle change would make a nice difference. My buddy changed his pagoda rear end for a 4.5 rear. All the best Cheers John.
Yes, there are plastic caps on the mounts originally. Never heard of issues with the bolt, but may be yours was as old as the car. We call the mounts Yoghurtbecher (yoghurt pots) because of its form. 😉
On this 4.5 when I removed the subframe it had a heavily corroded bolt too. Luckily it didn't snap. This car came from Colorado so may have been exposed to a lot of moisture. Cheers John.
What happens if the castle washer is installed wrongly and not locking ?
I'm assuming your talking about the upper castle washer to adjust castor angle? If its the wrong way round for instance it just won't engage in the notch and no adjustment can be made. As long as you're not drastically out I wouldn't worry about it. Because to correct it is a big job to switch it around. Take the wheel off and see if the upper trunion is roughly in the center of the control arm frame and you'll be fine. Cheers John.
Great vid John. One thing I’m interested in and hoped would be in this one is leaky steering box. Mine has a minor leak and wondered how much I should be worried. Rebuild or replace?
Thank you. Glad you like it. Personally I have not rebuilt one myself. Though it's something I have to look at on my 4.5. Its had a minor leak for a while. I have heard of a shop in Las Vegas that rebuilds them. Around $600. You have to send your core unit. Cheers John 🍻
Great Idea john, simple but very effective, well done. Cheers from DownUnder. 👍
Thanks Glenn! I'm happy with it. Snapping those bolts is a real pain to correct after the fact for sure. Cheers from California!! John.
Now you got me all freaked out about the bolts on my 82 380SL / 107..dear John. Thank you!
Different set up Harry. But we do need to do those subframe plates sometime. Hope to see you again soon. Good luck with the new place. Cheers John 🍻
I love Surface Shield. That stuff is great. I applied it to a couple troublesome corrosion areas under my 21-year-old F150 last March and it's still there many months later.
Its great stuff. As I use my 4.5 all years as a daily it helps keep corrosion out. I'm planning on getting one of those bigger pump probes to inject it into the cavity's and rockers etc. You should check out a channel called repair geek. He puts surface shield through its paces in the east area of the states where they use salt. It does very well. Cheers John.
Great idea !
Thanks Juan! Cheers John
I had one of those nightmare bolts. Thank you for spreading the word of warning. Could we make the plate thicker and the bolt longer - like your subframe lock when on the lift - so that it's locked at all times and covered from corrosive elements? Just a thought
If you were to lock it out completely it would defeat the purpose of the rubber mount. essentially locking it all together and not providing and shock absorbing effect. Thanks for your comment. Cheers John.
Thanks for this video, what is the timing TDC of the fuel pump for a six cylinder engine?
Are you referring to the fuel injection pump? There is a notch cut into the drive gear teeth which should be aligned with one on the body.. Now for the 6 cylinder I'm not 100% sure. But on the 6.3, once that notch is aligned the egine is set to 60 degrees atdc. There is a 60 degree notch on the harmonic balancer. I'll take a look at my book and see if I can find more details for the six and get back to you. Cheers John 🍻

Glad you think so. Hopefully it can help someone make a good decision. Thank you for your comment. Cheers John
first! greetings from Sweden
Hello there from California!! Cheers John.
Good idea, looking at getting that type of stand, hadn't thought of that potential problem
Its a great stand and very sturdy with the splayed leg design. But there is that issue. Some have suggested backing it in. But with my large engine that just would not work. Cheers John
@mercedesmaintenance.6339 it's design is based on the similar capacity 1 ton engine crane frame is the problem really (probably simplified the manufacturing of a new size at the time). Looking at getting a stand to do 1 specific job on a tractor gearbox for now, but I'm leaning toward a 2k pound/900kg as I could possibly hang cast iron tractor engines off it in the future
Get a stand that works in the first place
😄 🤣
John-Thanks a bunch for your excellent videos and stamina! After owning over 50 cars and 50 motorcycles, mostly German, some Italian, my 1968 280S is my absolute favorite daily driver! Something (or everything!) about it makes me happy. I've had numerous Porsche 356's 911's and even a GT3 daily driver, but this sweet '68 280S got under my skin the most. I'm a technician at a VW dealership but have always done my own work on the cars-in a carport in Palm Springs, where it's often 120+ in the summer! Your videos have talked me off the cliff repeatedly-Thank you!
Thank you Stuart!! Hats off to you being a VW tech:) My Wifes Tiguan has given me reason to jump off a cliff occasionally:) Very glad you're enjoying the Videos. Cheers John.
Thanks, John I forgot to mention I'm 68 soon to be 69 which should make you feel really young! I'm working with 20 and 30-year-olds but there's a lot of camaraderie and teamwork and we all share the idea that no one knows everything about everything and we learn every day. Your videos add so much to my confidence to tackle things I normally would be afraid to do and I know it takes a lot of work to produce what you do to film these! Double the work for you but helping a lot of us so again thanks!@@mercedesmaintenance.6339

Going to try the grease gun method tomorrow. My 4.5 calipers look a little crustier than those 🤞🏼
Hope it works for you. There's a lot of clean up afterwards but normally it will shift sticking pistons. Cheers John.
Good stuff, cant wait for the next one! I dont mean any disrespect or to tell you how to do stuff, but give a quick look into treating the steel pre-paint with phosphoric acid, It leaves a zinc-phosphate layer on the bare steel and keeps it from rusting. I use it for my W116 which allows me to keep surfaces bare untill Im done working so I only need to apply primer once to the whole area. Look up "How to stop a bare metal car from rusting" by Jethro Bronner. Again, good stuff, been following you for years and I must say good to see someone doing a proper good and thorough job!
No worries mate. I appreciate any tips. I have treated some of the earlier areas with acid etch, which is similar to what your describing. Zinc phosfate coating. Totally agree, its a good idea as these projects go on a long time. My plan is to get the main floor welded up, then treat with epoxy primer before moving to the rear. Once all done a good scuff and a final epoxy coat before underside treatment/paint etc. This rocker will get treated on the inside before closing in with the outer rocker panel. Always happy to hear from viewers. Cheers John 🍻
Great job. 👍
Thank you!!
Looks great John!! That permatex coat is great stuff to use. We have a similar product here in Australia called rust converter which does the same job. Once dried, it is paintable. I have used it lots of times.
Permatex is great stuff to treat good structure thats just got a little surface rust. Cheers John 🍻
Great work as always. I can‘t tell you how valuable these videos are for me, having a rusted old 109 waiting for restoration. I will learn from you and hopefully manage to get it back on the road. Thanks and keep up the good work :)
