It's so nice that you are teaching your kids mandarin Chinese! I noticed that some books or flash cards are written in traditional Chinese Characters and some are in simplified Chinese characters. Maybe you already know about this, for the same pronouciation, some words are written differently. I would recommend you to stay consisitent with one type of written characters in all ressources if possible to avoid confusion.

I am aware of the differences. I prefer traditional as that is what is used in Taiwan, but it is so hard to find good resources for traditional. So I teach the writing and reading with traditional, but if we are working in spoken, I’m less picky.

Thanks for sharing so many great resources! I think I agree on the short biographies of important people not sticking with kids if they don’t have other context like part of our history. I have a 3rd grade and a 5th grade son. I am planning to use The Ology and Old Story New for Bible, Shel Silverstein for Poetry, Myself and Others from Memoria Press for character and habits, and Eric Liddell and George Muller Christian Heroes then and now for biographies. Oh, we also need to finish How Great is Our God. We will be on our third year of that too 😂

Our basket time is Bible, read aloud, plus one thing from our loop. The loop is American history, theology/apologetics, world cultures, nature lore, and world history. The books we are currently reading are This Country of Ours, Mere Christianity, Our Australian Cousin, Minn of the Mississippi, and Trial and Triumph. If I exhaust all the books that I want to cover for a loop topic, I will pick a new topic to replace it.

Our whole family watches WORLD Watch news!!! My older kids used to watch touch point with me and my husband but I got fed up with the basis!!! The turtle twins logic book looks doable!!! Idk what we want to use for logic!!! I nearly bough sonlight J’s poetry book but it was voted not to buy my kids and I’m ok with that!!! We don’t do much poetry tho!!! I prefer to buy craft projects instead of art curriculum!!! We prefer a free style for art and crafts!!! We do art and crafts as a family time and include my friend’s adult kids if they want to join in as they make it fun!!! We love gentle and classical morning virtues!!! At the moment we are reading 2 chapters of Ezekiel a day when we do it as we loop devotionals!!! We love masterbooks science books but any other good Christian creation science books are awesome!!! I don’t want to overdo logic but I know we need to do something!!! I love to read Aussie books to explore our heritage especially as we’re not there anymore!!! We haven’t done Shakespeare at all!!! We do Greek mythology!!! I don’t include mythology till middle school!!! I switched it from Fairly takes to mythology as my kids grew!!!

    • @CalmintheChaosHomeschool

I will say… maybe? I don’t remember seeing anything inappropriate, but, when my child was posting some of the games attached to typing.com, they were taken to inappropriate places… so, personally I recommend paying for ad free (it was only a few dollars a month). I was not aware of that app when I made this video.

I’m figuring stuff out and we have this online tool!!! I don’t worry about finishing it in a yr most of the time!!! Those d’Aulaire books are amazing! My library (which consists of 30 branches) had a few that were non-circulating, meaning I couldn’t check them out. If I wanted to read them, I had to go to the downtown branch & read inside. I bit the bullet & bought Pocahontas & George Washington. I wish I could’ve bought them all, they’re beautiful & well written. I didn’t BFB, I did a history picture book study I found on teachers pay teachers. It incorporated a lot of these similar books, some UA-cam videos, notebooking & reviews.

I have heard that. Unfortunately, I feel the cost is pretty average for a online math program at the high school level and if it works for a child who really struggles, it would be money well spent. But I get the hesitation. Finances is a struggle for us right now as well.

I use Numbers on the computer. My oldest just finished 9th grade. I did a rough list of what she would be doing all 4 years. I did the same thing for my other daughter who is starting 7th grade. I use that information once finalized to put in another form I created which adds it to my older daughter's transcript that I created.

I don’t think I have ever used numbers, but I think it’s a spreadsheet system too? It’s nice to get all the thoughts and ideas out onto “paper”. I have two very similar things. I have my kids listed each grade and what I think they will take for a lot of the years. Then I do have a page with all the high school credits/courses thought out, but I want to update that a bit.

I used the computer and type out a lot… but when it comes to things like this, I want a pen and paper. I don’t keep a fancy planner at all. These pieces of paper work for me for to-do lists. Then I do have the systems and schedules on the computer :)

I haven’t wrote the subjects on notepaper per kid to see what I need to do!!! I’ve been working out credits as well!!! I plan just before we start!!! We use science and social studies books as part of the literature credit!!! We have some science left from last year and our homeschool advisor isn’t bothered with it!!! He wants us to do it properly instead of rushing thru it!!! I have to help my older kids to plan and I’m doing it at the moment!!! I’m trying to teach one of the teenage athlete to be flexible with his independent work!!! He’s hard on himself!!! I can’t plan a yr of devotionals!!! We plan as we go!!! My older kids did answers 1 and 2!!! Our state requires health!!!

I need to figure out our loop/schedule. I got a new job as an online reading tutor so I will be busier than usual. My 7th grader needs a lot of help in reading comprehension and writing so I have a lot of resources for that. My 10th grader is doing an online school so I don’t need to do much for her.

I have one child who I suspect dysgraphia. I would have to think about strategies as I generally just keep each child’s abilities and tolerance for different subjects/curriculum in mind, and try to pick things that will work for us. But that’s a great video idea. I’ll think about whether or not I feel “qualified” to give any advice in that area. I know we also struggle with low working memory, ADHD, and just some cognitive difficulties when it comes to learning new concepts.
