The MTA is making it easier for people to ditch the Metrocard over the next year in favor of the tap-and-go system. Not only has the OMNY system adopted a 7-day rolling fare cap (use the same card/device for 7 days, starting any day of the week, and you'll be capped at $34 for unlimited rides), but they are allowing people to buy cards from machines. This helps people with kids, or those who wa...

    What about monthly? Is there any way to do it, or do you have to do it weekly, or twelve taps a week, and get the second week free of charge?

    • @customnyctours
      @customnyctours 29 днів тому

      There is no monthly option as of now with OMNY. Just weekly. But if you use OMNY, you're capped at $34 a week, so essentially $136 a month.

    I love 6 1/2 Avenue. I discovered when I started swimming during business trips at Athletic and Swim Center, which is down the escalator under the glass ceiling between 51st and 52nd - at the start of the underground corridor. I used the corridor to get from the club to the Time Life Building, which is between 51st and 50th, for an interview with People. I didn't realize the corridor went to Rockefeller Center. Now I have a better way to meet my friend, who works at Christie's, for lunch. Thank you for the great tour!

    tried using omny for the first time not too long ago and it simply would not work with my credit card. had to use another card, and when trying to use it again later the day it told me my limit was exceeded... like seriously? you cant ride the subway using omny more than once a day? super stupid... that coupled with the fact that its much slower trying to tap it until it works. physically inserting the metrocard is much faster and convenient, you dont have to sit there wondering if it went through or not. there is a physical feedback, and no second guessing whether it worked or not. furthermore, having two separate systems on the path train now is beyond an annoyance, like really... i have to carry two different subway cards (omny AND tapp)... whereas i used to be able to have just my metrocard for everything. really a bummer that they are FORCING this on us, by getting rid of the metrocard. terrible.

    Thanks, Jeremy, for this informative tour, not only introducing 6-1/2 Ave but the fascinating underground routes so useful in unpleasant weather or just to feed one's curiosity relating to NYC's extensive "underground." It came at truly a good time, as I'll be back in the city later this month, so both "routes" are definitely on my to do list. Perhaps you've already done so (I'm new to your videos) but wonder if you might like to create a video on the McGraw Hill waterfall passage. I understand it to have recently been reopened after a long construction project blocked access. My fascination is cinematic, going back to the 1979 film "Last Embrace" which used the waterfall, the passage under it, and an inviting plaza as location for a scene with Roy Scheider and Marcia Rodd. Only recently did I - finally! - learn where that scene was filmed. Anyhow, just subscribed and look forward to more of your videos. Oh, yes, and thanks for not calling it a "hack" - Despicable term ;-)

    until OMNY has a monthly offer; which I was chatting with someone at Stillwell terminal a couple weeks ago as they were installing the new OMNY machines & they said that "its in the works", Im sticking with the metrocard cause it still has the 30-day option. Over the last 26 months since March 2022 when I've gone back to the 30-day unlimited (excluding June/September/October 2022, October 2023, February & March this year), Ive been using the 30-day pass for 20 of the last 26 months.This should be used by commuters who use the subway/local bus often cause the 30-day unlimited has its benefits over OMNY fare capping. For March/May/July/August/October/December, I'd start on the 2nd day of those months cause they have 31 days; January is different cause I'd start that 30-day pass on NYD cause of the fact February is a short month. So instead, I'd start the February monthly pass on Jan 31st & is good through March 1st (*February 29th if it's a leap year like it was 2.5 months ago & next would be 2028*). Then for April/June/September/November, I start on the 1st day of those months cause it's 30 days. Below is some math outright 30-day pass $132 per month x 12 months = $1584 a year 52 sets of 7-day passes; $34 per week x 52 weeks = $1768

    Thanks, Jeremy, for this engaging and highly informative video. I'd only visited Grand Central Madison once and was hugely impressed at what an engineering feat this was, especially considering the lowest track levels are an amazing 14 or 15 stories bneath the street grid, with multiple levels between them and the streets, as well as the spacious and attractive design scheme - truly world class. That one visit, with lots of still photography, left me a bit disoriented as to the mezzanine and concourse levels' relation to the rest of GCT, but your video puts it all in great perspective. I particularly like your treatment of the connections between Metro North platforms and GC-M involving the extensive subterranean passageways designed into the original GCT that actually run between the track levels - pretty impressive in their own era! The signage, of course, is excellent, so even the casual user can find their way; but for those like myself who are fascinated not only by trains but by such complexes of underground concourses, passageways, etc, your video becomes a wonderful guide for future visits, providing the "geography" behind where one is actually going. I plan to watch it again - at least once! - before my next visit!

  • @laceymaloney8846
    @laceymaloney8846 11 місяців тому

    I used to walk those corridors on my way from GCT to Columbus Circle 15+ years ago. It was especially helpful on those hot and humid summer days with those torrential rain storms and on cold, windy and/or snowy days. I could walk there faster than taking the subway. Sometimes even faster than a cab depending on traffic. I stumbled upon them accidently after making the route for some time! I didn't realize there was a connector to Rockefeller Center. Maybe that's newer? I love underground at Rockefeller Center. That's a hidden gem too. Also, the underground walkways that take you northbound out of the lower level of GCT are great too! Thanks for making and sharing this video. You've included some great details and tips in the video and walked the POP in an impressive 12 minutes time!

      Sorry for the late reply. OMNY ends the concept of pre-buying an unlimited card. Replaced with a fare cap.... In a 7-day period from your first swipe, after your charges hit $34 (the price of a weekly unlimited), you can tap away the remainder of those 7 days and not be charged.

    • @ajs11201

      @@customnyctours And to add: OMNY has no monthly variation. With OMNY, everything is based on a weekly maximum. For heavy users of the subway, that's a bit of a loss, but I guess the convenience of not having to reload your MetroCard every week or month makes up for it.

    The rolling 7 day window is a game changer for omny. When I was in New York in Febuary, I was really looking forward to finally just use my smartphone for access and not get frustrated with the Metrocard anymore (especially coming in via JFK and the AirTrain. So buying two goddamn Metrocards within 5min, just because someone decided you cannot use the AirTrain Metrocard for Unlimited passes). But the joy didn't last long, once I realized (luckily before I first used my phone on a reader) it only runs from Monday to Sunday. I was there from Thursday to Tuesday. So yeah, Metrocard once again.....

    • @ajs11201
      @ajs11201 Рік тому

      Agreed that the rolling week is a game changer. However, there was no need for two different MetroCards--you can put both time and money onto the same card and the subway and AirTrain will deduct the appropriate method off of the same card. The AirTrain will take its cash, and then the subway will begin to use your weeklong pass. When you get back to the AirTrain, it will look for more cash. That combination system was worked out years ago with the MetroCard, so that part is pretty convenient. Still, the newer rolling week with OmNY is the way to go.

    • @danielschlatermund3495
      @danielschlatermund3495 Рік тому

      @@ajs11201 but it only works if you already have a valid(not expired) Metrocard bought in the Subway System. If you come in as visitor with no Metrocard, you are forced to buy a Metrocard before the AirTrain Turnstiles at Jamaica or Howard Beach. These Metrocards, which display an AirTrain logo on the back, can not support unlimited passes. You can use them in the subway system, but only as pay per ride with balance on the card.

    I gave OMNY a try last June when I came to NYC for a long weekend. I had to buy it at a small retailer near Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave station, but I was able to load $33 on it for a week pass(I got to my 12th tap on my 3rd day of the 5 day trip). I love the fare capping system. I hope other cities can catch on with it as well. It would be nice if stations like 34th Street Penn Station, 42nd Street PABT, Howard Beach, Sutphin Blvd-Archer Ave, and Jackson Heights Roosevelt Ave would get these OMNY card vending machines, as those are the stations that most tourists would use 1st on their trip coming in from Amtrak, the PABT, or the airports.

    • @ajs11201
      @ajs11201 Рік тому

      More and more stations are getting the vending machines, but in the meantime, remember that any tap-style credit card along with smart phones can work, too. And if you use one of your credit cards or a phone, there's no need to pay the $1 for the card.
