I discovered Al Kooper when I was in high school (1966). My best friend and lead guitarist had Projections, still one of my favorite LPs. After The Blues Project, another of my favorite LPs of all time, Child is Father to the Man, the first and best BS&T LP and just about all the LPs since then. I am just about finished with his book. If you are any kind of fan, or interested in the music of that time, do yourself a favor and buy his book. Al Kooper has a great sense of humor and the book is an easy entertaining and very funny read. You won't be sorry! Recently, I had a couple of questions for Al and wrote to him via his website. Much to my surprise and amazement, I got back personal (and very humorous) replies.

The Cars! Easy one of 20 best american bands in history. And they live are unbeatable! So, Elliot Easton: a master! I'm 54 and group up listen The Cars here in Brazil and out of nowhere I just star a new Carsmania in my head, and to me is much better today than in the 80s.

The Cars were one of the tightest live bands I have ever seen. Blew me away. I happened to be in Salt Lake City Utah at a great concert venue called The Salt Palace. I came away with a new appreciation for that band and Elliot Easton specifically.

Elliot Easton should be rated in the top five Guitar Players ever. Soft spoken but, extremely educated in music. It would be great if Elliot Easton, Gregg Hawks, and David Robinson would get together and produce one more Cars Album.

I found the details on layering backing vocals back in the analog days, quite fascinating. By having all 3 of the backing voices sing in the same key, then repeating the process for each harmony part, what's created is basically a 4th voice (the mix down of the 3 voices) that we hear on all the albums, and on basically all of The Cars music. This "4th voice" is integral to The Cars sound and is very much missed when you listen to the solo projects by members of the group. Also, if we listen closely to those Cars backing vocals, no single voice can ever be distinguished over another, they all blend together seamlessly into one harmonious chorus like no other. I always wondered how this was done. Now I know. Thanks for sharing this behind the scenes production peek. Loved it. ✌❤🎶🤘🎸🎤

Too hyper. Al Kooper is an excellent interview subject. He’s calm and expressive. I would have asked follow up questions and let him go into greater detail about his teenage years. And why hasn’t his ‘80s album “Championship Wrestling” ever been issued on CD? It’s one of his best.

Loved the interview but that one little comment you made about “hating the word” was very much not necessary! why do you people (yes, I said it) YOU PEOPLE, have to inject your freaking politics into everything? And you have the nerve to call conservatives “mean spirited”! You’ve ruined this entire interview with you petty , irrational hatred. I will be unsubscribing!

The Cars were a band that if you want to create it you can't. 5 guys with a great talent and that complemented each other perfectly. And the fact that they had a lead singer who far from being an egomaniac was the sweetest guy on earth I think was the icing on the cake.

Fascinating insights. I've always considered The Cars to be rock and roll, but if you watch their 1979 performance of Candy-O on The Midnight Special, you can see how some might consider there to be "New Wave" elements to their music ua-cam.com/video/OGMVkpHraMM/v-deo.htmlsi=rYL-4iq876R_ZUJH . It was interesting to hear Elliot mention the Keeley 30ms pedal - I would have liked to hear what other pedals he is using currently and also for him to talk about how he achieved his iconic sound on the albums.

John Sebastian is an extremely talented musician, composer, group leader, a great interview subject, a great historical explicator, a decent fellow; and, an even-keeled chap. I did not recall that Sebastian was Italian. *literati;...->Not: "literary"! Good content, however, the loud, blaring, blasting, horrific intro music was absolutely revolting; and, as an interviewer you are far, far too bombastic.

They should have done part one where Jimmy doesn't interrupt Elliot's great stories and derail what probably would have been great Elliot tangets, then another part where Jimmy talk about whatever he wants and we can not listen.
