Hand Wound Pickups vs. Stock Pickups - Epiphone Joe Bonamassa 1960 Les Paul Norm Burst
this is what makes the UK taking a idea and expanding it the rellish was a step to far for guitarists. but Tim Lobley has seen the majic in swapping out pickups and even went to billy gibbons to see if he likes the idea the fact you have billy and PDG and the gream t guitars and gordon smith etc. they can all see the potential for this swaping idea i know it relish licence stuff but the Arora with the billy gibbons is a class combanation love your axes hope the company are sucsesfull my dad back in 1981 had a GS Gypsy single he played in a punk ska type band i got that guitar when he past unfortunatly it was stolen he used to say fck gibson fender the uk still make some of the best axes around and amps saving up for a Arora custom there the dogs jf.
ohhhuhhh love this one!
I am here for the raffle
Really, the 'tone' is just a difference in settings on amp. Maybe one notch each to volume, treble, and middle.
For me there is a crucial difference…the old PAFs have that air, that the GT don‘t have. There is a low midrange mung in the new ones. Which will dampen with time. I have a 91 SH-1 The 59 in my 91 LP Standard….that sounds pretty similar to the original PAF.
Wait, the pearly gates is supposed to be the most authentic reproduction of a PAF.
Great playing
? So are the Pearly Gates pickups being sold today by Seymour Duncan not the same as the originals? Thank you for the comparison, well done.
Nice guitar and super playing - nice one Scott!
What burst is that guitar?
The Duncans sounded better 👍
The Pearly Gates Les Paul is my dream guitar, and I'd be happy with either of them!
would love to hear the pickups through real 57 LP. The differences that I hear maybe caused by the guitar wood and hardware itself.
I have a Cream of the Crop set and a set of Duchess P90s - I’ve enjoyed messing around with them in a cheap Relish guitar. Wonderful pickups! Now I need to save up to buy a Cream T guitar!
Maybe already noted....but the WB Les Paul strings were "top wrapped" versus the SD Pearly Gates guitar was strung up through the tail piece. Just saying...wrap can have a small effect on Tone.
Unconvinced. The string vibrates between the tune-o-matic and the nut. That whole "top-wrap makes the strings longer, therefore softer ignores the basic fact that a longer string needs more tension to come up to the same pitch. there is two much snake-oil and fairy dust around top-wrapping.
wow sounds exactly like my 300 euro epi great job guys
Uneed g8bbys hands th8s guy sucks goats
I'm thinking of putting the WhiskerBuckers in my Firebird. I have an excellent luthier and think it would turn the guitar into an animal!
Or even the one that play "TV Dinners. WAY different sound.
Not buying it. Play the pickups that play "I need you to night".
I honestly on UA-cam think they both sound the bloody same. Both great pickups
A=B to me, and i is a fanatic about tone. I wish I could have heard any difference but couldn't
As much as I like Duncan pickups--and have a guitar (which I've not played in years) with a Pearly Gates p/u in it--the WhiskerBuckers are far more pronounced in chording & to some degree, lead tones.
The DrunkenDesigns sounds absolutely horrid compared to the Whiskerbuckers. Why would anyone not buy the Whiskerbuckers after this demo ? Convinced me period. Huge difference. I can see why Billy like them.
I thought the Duncan bridge sounded best on the high gain setting. I liked the Whiskerbuckers for everything else. The Whiskerbuckers have that "fat tele" sound that is very similar to the original P.A.F. sound.
It's a bit of a mess, we don't really understand the differences between the microphones...
I believe the beast are Bernie bucker guitar pick ups are a little bit better thicker tone, and I think even a little bit more potent neck, response and clarity. These are fantastic. However, there’s something slightly missing, almost as if the magnet is not quite fully charged I know that sounds ridiculous considering we’re talking about pick ups but it’s like they’re holding back just a bit and the beast pick ups. Well they don’t seem to hold back. Neither do the cream of the crop, I don’t hear as much of these in the cream of the crop pick ups as I do the beast are Bernie buckers 4:14
What can you do to a pickup to REvoice it?
The whiskers sound like they have a little more output which if your playing straight through an amp you dont necessarily want
Actually prefer the Duncan here. The WBs are just brighter
I disliked the crunch tone at the beginning. Very squeaky tone.
Nice.
Just received my bridge whiskerbucker today and i have to say. Hell yeah!!! They sound fantastic and what's immediately noticable is how harmonics friendly they are and i didn't played with the amp turned up yet. Yes, they sound like they do in this video. Not too much promised.
What amp was used?
Good video but it’s not a fair comparison!! The guitar with the Wiskerbuckers is TOP-WRAPPED. This makes a small sonic improvement in my Les Paul which is why I do it.
Yeah, deffinitely a difference to hear. The Whiskers are much more present and have better definition.
Love that sound ofcourse.
The same old twaddle in a bid to sell pickups.
More of these posts please!
I am looking for ther next guitar 🎸 John I can't wait hurry up lads John ferguson thanks take care 😀
I have two thay are amazing guitars triy them wen you can a great pleasure pleasure
In this instance I thought the Seymour Duncan sounded more like original PAF but both are great.
Neither sound like an original PAF they are meh.
I wish the guitars had been strung up the same, one is top-wrapped, the other is not. Hard to say how that affects the comparison.
This is from the same source as marketed the Mexican Lottery guitar strings - 007 gauge top E. So............................................................
I think I like the SDs better, I dont care for the extra brightness in the whiskers. They are way too clean, even with grit. And Im droppin them in an SG standard so, they will be slightly brighter in that than a LP. But nothing nails that BFG tone like a Billy Bo and powertrons through a small tube amp cranked. All 3 are great though. I think the most versatile for different genres, is the SD’s. If youre looking at SD’s dont overlook the Saturday night specials. They are fantastic as well. Great A/B great job and excellent playing. I wish I could play like that, but never took lessons. Im just a poor hack..
I'm going to have to get a set of these.
WhiskerBuckers. No contest
These are definitely not bad. I am currently using a set of the Derek trucks or DTBUCKER pick ups in one of my guitars, and the Bernie, BU,CK ER S and another and after listening to these pick ups, which fall a little shy and output of those two cannot safely say I feel these are all Nico five based on their sound but of course the specs on cream tea pick ups more than just DC output is about all you get it’s not many of them less the magnet I have actually messaged in many times to find out exactly what the specs were either. It’s me having a hard time finding them or they’re not there, but what I will tell you is there some of the best boutique pick ups I’ve ever played I got rid of a pair of throwbacks do use a pair of these and these were only half the price of the throwback guitar pick ups so they’re certainly excellent and they are spot on because my Bernie BUCKERS are truly straight up bad ass pick ups from good Joe Bonamassa sounds to the burning sounds there’s just a variety of tones in those on oriented A5 Magnets and I don’t think this set offers near the 3-D quality or just simple touch sensitivity that those other two sets of pick ups offer again the baby bikers are Bernie are truly the best they make in my opinion even out of phase they sound fantastic these I did not find worth the money and listening to them are in trying them truly the Givens pick ups I mean, if you compare the whisker, buck her to the pearly gates, you’ll even see people have a very difficult time, telling very little difference with exception of a slight improvement and clarity And it’s only slight and truly is it that or could it have been the strings on that particular day? I just don’t know that some of the remakes are really where these guys shine I mean obviously they do in some of them but I think where they truly shine and the best set I have from them overall after saying, all I have said, are they scanned one 1959 pick ups, which there are no sound clips for here But I can tell you I paid over $600 for mine and they’re probably only about $400 on the side and they’re worth 1000 I’ll put them in a true 59 and they’re the best sounding pick ups I’ve ever had, and they are certainly way more powerful than either of these sets They just came from a Les Paul that they scanned and they are called the scan one 1959‘s check them out they have a variety of their own scanned pick ups from individual Les Paul’s they have found out in the field that are otherwise unremarkable with the exception of the fact that they are true PIS, and true 59’s otherwise Their independence scans are truly their best work. This guy is a monster when it comes to coming up with a good pick ups to scan, I would love to have their whole collection truly but I am just a gigging guitarist and I’m about maxed out on funds but I tell you what I would love to live a lot longer than I know I’m going to so I could see what they truly accomplish in HB tone before it’s over with because I think if anyone can bring the PAF sound back and variety without it having to be signatures I think this is the company that can build you The most accurate PE if you’re going to get because how can you be in accurate when everything including string tension is precisely matched there is not one piece of the pick up that is not exactly matched to the ones they’re copying their perfect it is very hard to argue with their science as a matter fact only an idiot with try And I am not getting paid to say all of this I truly do love them. 1:53
Geoff’s an absolute legend
Ah...like the Top Gear intro lol great sounding pickups on a serious note
