Mayfield, MO-the “Witch’s” grave
Переглядів 28510 місяців тому
Mayfield, MO-near Jerome & Fort Leonard Wood-is long gone now, but the old Mayfield cemetery remains, as well as a ride side burial site known locally as “The Witch’s Grave”. But what is the truth of the matter? Was Eliza Jane Laycock Thomas, in fact, a witch? Or is this just local lore? Well, facts are remarkably scarce, but I did manage to find a little bit of info.

Sultana shipwreck preview

Just a quick little preview of the video I got together for the shipwreck of the Sultana. The Sultana was the greatest maritime disaster in American history. Planning to drop this video on 10/20/22 at 10pm CST.
The Newburg, MO Flood-June 8, 1945
Переглядів 7732 роки тому
On June 8, 1945, a flood ripped through the small Missouri town of Newburg. The town was hit with a seven foot high wall of water (some sources state it was actually ten feet) and did somewhere between $500,000 and $700,000 worth of damage-in 1945 money. That would be in excess of $8,000,000 today. I’ve tried to get the details as accurate as possible. I’ve found a few different spellings of a ...

Howdy my friend I was thinking the same thing I was starting to get dizzy😂
My Mom and Dad Bud and Emma Wilson always told us stories about the flood thank you my friend for this wonder video❤❤❤
Hello my friend it's so Awesome to see another UA-camr from Newburg I love my hometown❤
@@NonieMaesLife hello, friend! I’m actually not from Newburg, but I do love the little town. I currently live just a few miles away from Newburg, though.
@BackroadsTraveler I shared you out on my community tab and shared this video on my facebook...I remember hearing about the flood from my parents and other alot...Thanks so much for this video my friend...
Are these boots waterproof?
in 2022 we came out with the air cut off mod and started including it in the kit along with the fuel tap mod these make a huge difference and suggest you do them thanks for the great review
@@megacityperformance3523 I’d love to play with that, but I’ve since traded off my beloved KLR and switch’s to a Triumph Tiger Explorer. 1200cc fuel injected engine may be harder to work on, but, man, it boogies! And I found sixth gear!
Nice, I'm getting set up with a motocross style outfit for riding my four wheeler on the trails, but I don't need or want tall boots for sliding my feet, and I think these will be a good match with my motocross jersey and pants. Thanks!
@@mattt7782 I really like them. I bounce around on boots-if I’m planning on riding asphalt, I tend to lean towards a touring boot; if I’m running gravel, my shorty is my go-to…but if I’m running trails or crossing creeks and stuff, I wear tall boots. But that shorty is still running hard, and still a go-to!
while heading to / from the northern end of this... just north of Mt Judea is 374 to hwy 7. That's a cool ride if you're heading to/from Jasper.
Yes it is! That road is a hidden gem! It was sheer luck on my part that I took it at all. I hadn’t planned to, but a last minute decision ended up being one of my better surprises from that trip! Took my wife through there the year before last in her car, and hope to have her with me on the Triumph next year for the same trip!
Thanks for keeping it real. She still has descendents in the area. As for anyone visiting the site, that's someone's great-grandmother. Please show respect
I must have watched this a thousand times and it only gets funnier
Hey Matt Shawnas Momma here. Love your videos. Happy Trails my friend ❤❤
Hey! Thanks for watching, really appreciate it! Hoping to get myself out and do some more soon!
Seems Like An Enjoyable Ride On A Nice Day
I love that color! Good times ahead 👍
Im confused.Arkansas or N Carolina? Sweet road?
100% Arkansas. The stretch of 123 between Lurton and Mt Judea is sometimes referred to as “The Little Dragon”, “The Dragon’s Tail” (as opposed to “The Tail of the Dragon” in NC) or the “Arkansas Dragon”. Thanks for watching!!!
Where is this
Thanks
Thanks. Keep them coming
your stories about the town of newburg and your other travels are very interesting. i’m keeping an eye out for more
Thanks for the kind words! I’m hoping to get out and about and do some more stuff this year. If the weather cooperates, I have plans for next week…we’ll see what happens!
Have a Blue Triumph 2016 Explorer XRT with the 3 Triumph bags. Put on 30,000 miles so far and it’s been 100% reliable. Did have the 20,000 service and it needed 3 shims for the valves. Runs like new. Fast, comfortable and a great long distance machine. Good luck with yours and have fun. I’m 74 years old and been riding for 55 years and I plan to keep pushing as long as I can. Best wishes from Wisconsin.
Thanks! In the KLR world they always say “the blue ones are the fastest!” Glad to hear it’s working well for you. I don’t know if the prior owner did his 20k service or not-need to get to a Triumph dealer and have them do a check. I’m hoping I’ll be riding till I’m gone…didn’t start riding until three years ago, and feel like I need to catch up! I’m loving the Tiger-I suspect, unless something happens to sour me, I’ll be running a Tiger for a long time.
Awesome video
Thanks!!!
Congratulations on the Triumph! I've always wanted a Tiger, they are awesome bikes!
Thanks, and thanks for subscribing! Ya know, it’s funny-when I bought my first bike in 2020, I knew the day would come that I’d upgrade, and I remember watching someone riding a Tiger, and told my wife, “That’s a Triumph Tiger. That’s the bike I want. Someday, I’ll get one.” Honestly didn’t expect that day to be this soon!
Love your videos!! I can’t wait to see what your next adventure is
Thanks! Make sure to check out the witch’s grave!
I like how this grave has one of them little solar-powered lamps embedded
Looking forward to seeing your off-road adventures.
Thanks! Hopefully I can be a little more active in the future!
@@BackroadsTraveler Be as active as you want, this is not a race...
@@PaulsMotoZen yeah, but I really enjoy doing it. Problem is, in making videos, I forget to enjoy riding. And having two bikes really sucked up time. I don’t plan to ever have two bikes again!
Good evening, Backroads- super vlog. till next time. ;))
KLR Dash...😉
FALSE, FALSE..This tracker is almost worthless. I returned it and had to go the more expensive route. YOU WILL NOT get your bike back with this tracker, its that far off!
Cool. Sorry you had a bad experience, but that absolutely was not my experience with the tracker. As a matter of fact, I often jump on the bike and head to work and forget to put the fob in my pocket. It tracks me all the way to work, where I put it into sleep mode. I’ve loaned my bike to a friend a couple it times and did not loan him the fob-and it tracked him every step of the way. Dunno what was wrong with yours, but mine is great. Where did you mount it?
Cool!
These are like $75 on Amazon right now you still like yours? I’m a little concerned it won’t last but I guess the price is right
I just retired mine to backup status. I acquired a Speed & Strength helmet that has become my primary, although there are several features of both I like and dislike. The GMax visor I actually prefer to the S&S, but the S&S had better clarity, and fogs less. For $75, I’d buy another in a heartbeat if I needed one.
It is a nice road but Dragon (US-129) is waaaaay more challenging…
I have made a plan to go out there the past two years, but it keeps getting shot down. Really wanna run it. I absolutely love twisties.
@@BackroadsTraveler just go! there is tons of good roads in that area.
I live in the area. I think people just got on a kick of naming things dragon if it had a couple of hair pins. It's a fun road but it's just a curvy road with a handful of sharp corners. The Pig Trail is also over rated. Good road. Not a destination road.
Hi Matt it's landon
Hey, buddy, hope you are enjoying the videos!
While never have been to this area your video put me back in the doorway of a Army Huey Gunship on the deck at speed in the late 60s. Always thrilling! Thanks Sir.
Or hwy 30 in Tennessee. But 10,20 feet over the river south of cu chi at a high rate of fuel consumption consumption
@@gregclinton8 Absolutely! Raining and cold wet clothes always made for a chilling ride! Guns Up!
Awesome! Thanks for the compliment and for your service! Folks can laugh at me if they want, but I often imagine I’m flying in some sort of extremely agile craft on roads like that. And that video was a very lucky accident. I’d misjudged my trip, and that was the only camera that still had battery life by the time I got to the switchbacks-and the camera died about two minutes after I got to the bottom!
@@BackroadsTraveler Flying mentally while physically driving is something I do on a regular basis.. Since I live in Stone County, Arkansas I "Fly" a lot. Sitting about 12" in front of a hi res 27'monitor and watching yo sweep those curve made me fil roll motion. Great feeling to have again. I was a back seat door gunner on a Huey gunship and we put it on the deck plenty of times. Had sever pilots that like to drop down under the tree canopy and follow the road going through the Michelin Rubber Tree Plantation. Several times they had to bank hard and cut though the tree tops with the blades. I had pieces of tree limbs hit me several times. I doubt those ground workers were very happy about that at all. Put 2- 1/2 years in the same company on two tours. Never wore a seat belt or monkey harness the entire time I was there. Road Harleys for a number of years but nothing like you! I do know my limitations on the ground! Think I need to build a two seat roadster I have had on my mind for a number of years. Would be a great car for the Dragon. Thanks for your great video and my mental trip on the deck. You Done Good!
I rode Dragon's Tail about a month ago and vowed myself I'd be back! What a great road! Thanks for capturing the switch backs! Pig Trail is good, but nothing like the Dragon's Tail!
Thanks for watching! I took my wife to Paris, AR last year, and we drove down to Mt Magazine, and there’s some dandy roads down there, too. Just bought a new bike-video coming soon-and plan to go back down there and run that road again, as well as the ones around Mt Magazine.
pinlock system.....????
Not on this helmet. Don’t let it deter you, though-it’s a dandy helmet. Be doing a review very soon on a similar helmet from Speed and Strength, as well…might take interest in it.
That bridge you went to I made a video on it as my 400 subscriber special and it’s all grown up
Firstly-thanks for watching! I reckon you’re local to the area! Secondly-is that the same bridge? The one I’m sitting on in the video is by the baptist church.
Found your sticker on there!
Hey! Thanks for watching!! Did ya find the channel after the sticker, or the other way around?
@@BackroadsTraveler I found your channel by the sticker

The difference between wisdom and intelligence is one is done by doing, and the other is learning from others. I gained the wisdom of your situation, by doing the same thing a few months ago. I gained the knowledge of never doing that again, and knowing that someone else will also learn by wisdom, and doing it themselves. ;) Take care, and ride safe.
Lol shitttt happens even on our best day 🤣 don't sweat it
Bike ain’t hurt, so it’s all good. Scrubbed my boots and jeans with Dawn dish soap-if it’s good enough for the little duckies on the commercial, it ought to work for my britches!
Many thanks.
Who can tell me the history of the subdivision behind the currently closed gas station/water department office? My family bought a few acres back on Grant in 2012 and I have always wondered about its history.
Nice bike. Love the tool box. Cheers from a WA gen 2 rider.
Thanks! Funny story about that toolbox-it was custom made for a buddy, who sold his KLR and I bought the tool box-then he got another KLR and I sold it back. Replaced it with a similar box from SWMotech. Had to do some very simple modification to make it work, but any idiot could do the same. If you’re interested in something like that, I’ll provide you a link.
It’s made for the SWMotech crash pan, but is easily adapted to the Ricochet and I’d imagine many others. sw-motech.us/products/protection/engine+guard/4052572054505.htm
Super interesting, love the video!
I love history. I have never heard about this. Thanks so much for sharing. You did a great job telling the stories. It seems like it's been a while since your last video. Glad to see you back at it.
It has been a while. I have two kids that want to be involved in every sport or activity they can, and after getting the HD, I’ve found myself with twice the standard maintenance, and half the time. Covid lockdown made it real easy to go adventuring! And I’d forgotten what I was to ride for the joy of riding-kinda got back into that a bit. But I’m hoping over the nicer days this winter I can do some more interesting stuff. Planning to visit a couple of ghost towns soon.
And thanks!
Stories, good or bad, should all be told.
Cool history lesson
Thank you!
I grew up there lots of history. Grow up next to the Opera House and been in plays

LMAO well done
Thanks got another great video. I learned to play pool in that bar. It was green and white when I grew up there. The creek that runs under it is called "turd creek" by locals. Yes the bar was a bank. And the vault is now a freezer.
