Jim Valvano On David Letterman (garagegabs.com)
7:32 - Letterman doesn't like when his guests take over and are funnier than he is.
So thankful to have gone to NC State and learn about his legacy.
What year was this?
Pig letterman
Dang this video is really old lol.
Yup
One of the most lovable person in the world.
This is funny but if you really want some laughs, check out the graduation rate of Valvano's players at NC State. Now THAT'S funny.
One of my favorite people! Rip coach V.
This is from April 2, 1987. It re-aired on May 27, 1988.
What a great Paizon ❤
David letterman was a jerkoff way back then too huh??
I wished someone would upload the 86 game when NC State destoyed clempson 27 - 3.I love to see those crooks get beatdown. I always wonder how they get these recruits. As a recruit do you go to clemson and play presbyterian and five other losing record teams or go to a school that plays top competion more than once or twice a year. It does not add up and why the NCAA does not at least look into this is astonishing.
Thanks for sharing this. I went to state in 83. I had cancer in 2011 and Valvano's "Don't ever give up" inspired me.
I have my bags packed.
How are you doing now?
he says here he was married for 20 years, so it had to be in 1988.
Great guest, not such a great host. R.I.P. Coach V!
How can you not fall in love with stories told like that. I was hanging on his every word.
Who cares what Jim May or May not of done. He lived life to the fullest.
Even great man like Jimmy V will have some punk ass haters. Maybe some of the bitch ass comments about his character are Houston fans. Lol
This is one of those interviews you see once and remember forever. Another classic is Mandy Patinkin singing "Somewhere over the Rainbow" to fill a gap left by Cher standing Dave up. The short version is better quality, but the long version has all of Letterman's sarcastic commentary which was brutal, even for him
I gotta be honest: this kind of Italian bothers me a bit. He's loud. But not all Italians are like that. Southern Italians are like that, with that paisan stuff. I'm from Northern Italy and we don't much care for Southern Italians, but I just want to point out that to call this guy a typical Italian, "ugly and arrogant", is an offense to those many Italians who aren't loud and overbearing like this guy. If I said, "Those typical loud, fucking drunk micks", would you like it?
Daniel Zanier .... well... WE LOVE JIMMY. He is beloved by millions and forever will be.
It was a lie, he was absolved of all accusations and found innocent by the NCAA. That proof enough?
RE:rollinsoz007... you're right. the book was pretty much a hatchet job by a couple disgruntled ex-managers and employees of the athletic dept. I've heard UNC had something to do with the book, too, but I hope not. Dean Smith was such a class act, I would hope he would put stop that... but the book says a couple things that are patent lies. they say that nc state ran no set offense. not true. they said charles shackleford didnt brush his teeth? wtf! i've met him. he does. nice guy and good kid.
R.I.P. Jimmy V
He must have seemed like an amazing coach/person.
Jimmy V always rocked......I worked 2nd shift at the time and always caught the Jimmy V. NC State Wolfpack radio show during my supper break. Jimmy V. was a great guy.
David rarely lets his guests take over his show, but if there's anyone that can do it, Jimmy V :)
Legend
Buongiorno, I am pretty sure this was broadcast in the summer of 1987, not sure if it was June, July, or August. I still remember this vividly cause Jimmy V mentions Little Italy and NY.
Probably was 1987 because Valvano congratulated Letterman on Indiana, and Indiana had won the national championship in 1987.
Cochiani would have been a better pro because he could handle the ball and he would have improved his outside shot.
@IGOTBANNEDONCE I AGREE WHOLEHEARTLY and I am a CAROLINA FAN!!!!! I LOVED JIMMY V!!!!!!

Great person!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is a straight up fact that no evidence was ever found that Coach V took any money, changed any grades, altered any drug tests or anything. He didn't have a good graduation rate and some of his kids sold shoes. I don't know where I can find this online, but it is a very well known fact in North Carolina. NCSU was made an example of by the NCAA and the News and Observer's baseless accusations, coupled with this book made Coach V the scapegoat for a situation not half as bad as some think.
The book was a lie. It had a few strings of truth, but much of what accused Jimmy V of, point shaving, money taken from boosters to give to players, drug tests swept under rug, grades altered, etc. was all a lie. The only things he was guilty of was not graduating a high rate of players and a few kids sold shoes. He should've done things differently a few times, but never did anything wrong. NCSU was made an example of by the NCAA and Jimmy V was made the scapegoat.
I am fortunate to say that I was lucky enough to meet Jimmy V at SDF Airport in Louisville when the team came here to play. My friend took our picture, his arm around my waist ( I was in absolute Heaven ) I told JV that he is a brilliant coach and got his autograph, too :) Jimmy did what no one could do and that was out coach every single team they played against. Absolute Brilliance! Rest In Peace Good Man.
0:38 says it all. Top 5 moments in my 8 years of season tickets: 1. Anthony Grundy hits a three at the buzzer to beat UNCG. 2. Cameron Bennerman's dunk over Sheldon Williams 3. The end of this game. 4. This dunk. 5. When we threw shit on the floor at some Wake game back in 03...
i go to garner we do have a pretty good team but the school is so poor
God bless his sole. What a character. He's funnier than Letterman.
great video
Wow! Thanks for having this! God, Jimmy V. was awesome. SO much personality. I have watched Dave for over 20 years, and it is a rare occasion that a GUEST controls the interview. Thanks, again, for putting this video up.
Honestly, no. I remember they sucked that year. The video wasn't posted to be an "we are great vid", just thought it was a cool retro find.
Do State fans remember what happened the week after that game?
wow this looks so different.. for a second i thought they were playing in reynolds.. amazing angle.. makes the court look smaller but not a bad thing at all..
Such a class act. Too bad there aren't many coaches like Jimmy V left.
Spot on commentary. The NCAA chose to make an example of NCSU at that time to discourage other programs. You hear of teams today pulling off MUCH worse with less severe penalties imposed. Quite honestly, the program STILL hasn't recovered.
It was for the same junk every program in the ACC was doing! LOL... what happened to Jimmy V was, first, he was an enigmatic person. Second, he recruited some players with very poor character. Third, a money-grubbing 'journalist' saw a chance to make money off his fame and, last, NC State's 'owners' did not have the guts to take their own medicine when they could just SCAPEGOAT Jimmy V and ruin the program. LOL... The offenses were free tickets and shoes! LOL... Hmmm, who would OK that?
It's too bad NC State University's Genetics department didn't get some DNA so we could have cloned him and won some more ball games by now!!! LOL... the best coach DURING A GAME that ever was. He motivated players to higher heights than anyone else could have dreamed and The NCAA even had to change a rule because of his strategic genius. His whole career was filled with victories over so-called 'superior' teams. He OWNED COACH K and handed Dean Smith more than a few of his most bitter defeats.
I burst out laughing watching this. Man I wish I knew Jimmy V better than simply watching these clips of him from back in the day.
Never added you as a contact. You keep posting on my videos (pretty rude stuff at that) and I don't know you. You sent me a random invite to watch some animated video...not really my thing. To each his own I guess. Learn to spell & quit spamming me please.
Wow, angry much?
best college bb & pro hockey team = fun
