SCCA Midnight Madness 2024 HRG race
Night race at Thompson Speedway's road course. July 6, 9:30 PM starting time. Two red 1963 Triumph Spitfires having fun. Jim Trudeau in Russ Moore's old Spitfire has red LED on the roll cage, mine has blue. No headlights allowed, just a rain light with the optional front facing LEDs to make the following car visible in the mirror. My light's power connector fell out of the socket 3/4 of the way through the race so Jim had no idea where I was most of the time after that (not intentional). Nice clean driving, fun race.

The first couple of laps of the Triumph vs MG challenge race during the 2022 edition of the Put-In-Bay reunion event. After these laps, I was left running my own pace, in between the fast pack and well ahead of the mid pack cars. No more challenges or challengers so I stopped recording. Fun event, great support from the community.

    Good video. Let’s see the whole car. I have a 1971 Spitfire Mark IV race car with a 1296 cc engine. Loved watching this video but looked like the linkage was connected between the two carbs. Assuming SU, should you not disconnect them before final tuning? Then reconnect for final adjustments. please correct me if I am wrong.

      I didn't show that part, I really made the video for myself, the AFR gauge was a new addition to the car. For the video, I'm at the final stages, adjusting the balance between the carbs, so the both start to rise from the same position, before I adjust the air fuel mixture on each one. link to car info historicracinggroup.com/harmuth.php

      My transmission is a close ratio one with gears from a TR7 , 2L,(for strength). The ratios aren't the best for the torque curve of my 1.3l engine. Over 6K, I get more speed from 4th gear than if I held it in 3rd. My cam's power band is 4K-7.4K, 6.6K (shift light comes on) in 3rd is really pushing it past peak power. I can still rev from there but I'll go faster in 4th (1:1 ratio).

      We don't know. This was the test run, found some plugs fouling. After changing the plugs, the starter crapped out. Tough to push start, even tougher pushing it out of the shop, uphill to the trailer.

    Thanks for putting these up. It looks like great fun. The lighting was better than I expected, almost as good as daylight. Too bad Phil broke early, but it turned out that his brake problem saved his engine from major damage. A nut on a connecting rod bearing was backing off, far enough that oil pressure was mostly lost. And the oil pan got dented when it fell off the jack, the dent hitting the crank. Much easier to fix.

    • @OFRacer

      No, I'm adjusting the balance between the carbs, so the both start to rise from the same position, before I adjust the air fuel mixture on each one. The linkage was already adjusted with the engine off.

      Thanks Doug, this was a few years ago, someone recently asked to see the video. I hit the wall at Lime Rock, another time, in 2008. I pulled up hard on the steering wheel to push down on the brakes and pulled the steering shaft out of the coupling at the steering box. Interesting time to find out: 1. the coupling (hidden inside the the engine mount upright) existed 2. that the PO had put an undersized bolt in the clamp so it didn't catch the notch in the steering shaft, put there to prevent this kind of thing.

    Mike - Thompson looks like a fun track, is it the same design as it was originally?

    • @OFRacer
      @OFRacer 5 років тому

      Hi Doug, not the same layout as the original. Two families owned pieces of adjacent property and built the track in on both the late 40's. They had a falling out and when the grandson of one of the original owners, who kept the oval track open all this time, wanted to bring back the road course he had to compromise. The track is the same length as the original but is tighter to keep it on one piece of land.

      It's a station 4 tradition. We put the bullseye up every year, and award it to the driver who knocked over the most hay during the weekend. Thanks for coming and driving, it's always nice to see and hear the old cars at something more than residential speeds.

    As HRG, I know we follow the GCR for safety gear (cages). We do not follow the GCR for car prep. Do we follow the GCR for driver behavior? By the GCR, fault is arguable. If this race were run under vintage rules, the fault is clearly the Miata's for not initiating and completing a safe pass. Clearly the Miata driver feels that driver behavior was governed by GCR and our race organizers seem to agree. Do we as a group feel otherwise? If so, we should have made it clear beforehand.

  • @Mwobley
    @Mwobley 12 років тому

    I guess the debate will rage on, but two SCCA stewards looked at it and agree with Paul. I will bear this in mind in the future. However, one reason I race HRG is to avoid the 10/10ths racing. Parts on these old cars are scarce.

  • @Mwobley
    @Mwobley 12 років тому

    Staying on the racing line is not an abrupt change to one's line. If the nose of a car trying to overtake hits the rear tire of the car on the line, that is an overly aggressive attempt at a pass. One thing to hold in mind about this particular race is that it is an historic series race where competitors are told, and the Miata drivers specifically, have have been warned that have been allowed to join in at the sufferance of the historic drivers, is to be respectful and no dive-bombing.

  • @paulcapel2384
    @paulcapel2384 12 років тому

    Sir, with respect, the GCR disagrees with you based on the video. And just so you know, you are talking about a 63 year old veteran driver with 30+ years of experience who was nationally licensed many years before the word Miata even existed. I can assure you he has no interest in barging anywhere. Let alone buying new fenders or worse.

  • @paulcapel2384
    @paulcapel2384 12 років тому

    Section 6.11.1 (C) of the SCCA GCR Drivers must respect the right of the other competitors to racing room. Abrupt changes in direction that impede or affect the path of another car attempting to overtake or pass may be interpreted as an effort to deprive a fellow competitor of the right to racing room.

  • @paulcapel2384
    @paulcapel2384 12 років тому

    Your point is partly correct, however the car being overtaken has the responsibility to give racing room which he did not. The Miata's line did not change while the Lotus' line drastically changed suddenly. The correct racing line is irrelevant especially since it hardly exists in a traffic situation. What is relevant is whatever line the cars were currently on. The Miata did not change his, but the Lotus did, and in way such to suggest he was not even vaguely aware of his surroundings.

  • @OFRacer
    @OFRacer 12 років тому

    racing line for the uphill is to track all the way out to the left and hit the apex of the corner on the right. The overtaking car has the responsibility to cleanly make the pass. If the overtaking car had their fender ahead of the passed car, the passed car should grant the line. This wasn't the case, the overtaking car wasn't next to the Lotus. The Mustangs were close to each other and gave each other racing room.

  • @Mwobley
    @Mwobley 12 років тому

    I've watched the lap 1 contact over and over again, IMHO the Miata made an overly aggressive move forcing his nose up the inside of the corner trying to force a path. It is the responsibility of the overtaking car to make sure that there is enough room to safely make a pass. Classic Miata racing, barge your way through and buy another aftermarket fender.

  • @paulcapel2384
    @paulcapel2384 12 років тому

    I'm a little thick apparently. Someone kindly explain to me how a drastic chopping maneuver at the apex has been construed as being the fault of the car that was chopped. This is lap one, folks. The whole field is two wide at this point. Where is the so called "stupid move"? The two mustangs entered the uphill in exactly the same configuration, yet I don't see the one on the left chopping the one on the right. The maroon mustang must have actually been aware of his surroundings I guess.

  • @OFRacer
    @OFRacer 12 років тому

    Hi Andre, you give me more skill than I really have. The pedal was to the metal, the engine was slow to rev. I'll be at Limerock for the next two weekends,I know the track well and how the car should behave there. After looking at the plugs, I may have gone too rich on the needles in the carb, I'm going to try some other profiles if my times are off. Between the two weekends, I'll have 13 on track sessions, plenty of time to experiment. mike
