Ben Lomond in Winter via Ptarmigan Ridge
Переглядів 39621 день тому
A very tough but rewarding day, heading up the Ptarmigan Ridge with @hikingwithfrank315 for company, deep snow and gale force winds, energy sapping but worth it for the amazing summit views on Ben Lomond, thanks to Malcolm for taking our summit pix, he was a wee bit surprised but suitably impressed when we popped up onto the summit via the ridge, another fantastic adventure in Scotlands Mountains.

We knew the weather forecast was poor, therefore chose a corbett closer to home, to give us a chance to fight against the elements and satisfy our need to get out on a hill, a tad windy and poor visibility higher up but an enjoyable day all the same.

So we decided after climbing Mount Keen to nip along the road to Mill of Aucheen and knock off the corbett Mount Battock, what a great decision that was, as the weather steadily improved, providing great conditions and fantastic views.

The Brothers Ridge Bike & Hike

After three weeks of incessant rain, at long last Sean Batty and his pals were predicting wall to wall sunshine for Scotland on Saturday 31st August, so myself & @Allysmountainwalks6462 headed up to Glenshiel on the Friday night, parked along from the Cluanie Inn and after a comfortable night in Allys Camper Van, we cycled down to the starting point for The Brothers Ridge to tackle the three Mun...

Ben Vrackie an Ideal Beginners Walk

A wee jaunt up the corbett Ben Vrackie just outside Pitlochry, a decent day weather ways but also a very busy mountain, due to it being a Saturday and the fact that there were a lot of very inspiring people tackling the corbett to raise funds for MacMillan Cancer Support, a very well maintained footpath and a lovely wee lochan Loch a' Choire at the foot of the mountain, stunning views all aroun...

That was one amazing view at the start and I always love to see an honesty box, as long as it is used properly. It looked a tough assent with that wind and those views from the summit were worth all the hard work, cheers Alan
Aye it's a cracking mountain ⛰️ with amazing views Alan, the honesty Box is a great idea 💡 if used properly as you say, a very enjoyable day all round, thanks very much for watching and commenting Alan atb Brian 👍

Superb Brian 😍👍..I have to admit I love those conditions..Maybe not as much wind 🤣..The views were amazing mate..Puts me in the mood for going up in the snow..Enjoyed that buddy. Cheers Murchie
Aye me too bud but yes a tad less windy, you canny whack it 🤪 atb Brian 👍
Lovely sun but the wind could be a bit weaker 😁😁Amazing shots from the top! We did the Ptarmigan Ridge last winter, but there was nearly no snow, just lots of ice 😊😊
First time I've done the ridge and I really enjoyed it, but aye a bit less windy would have been ideal, the soft snow ❄️ nearer the summit, made for tougher going but what a day 👌 thanks atb Brian 👍
Hi Brian, that was a windy old day mate, stunning views though when you got to the top, well and on the way up to. Haha All the best mate
Aye a bit bonkers 🤪 Dave but strangely satisfying 🤣 cheers atb Brian 👍
Fantastic video and views!
Thanks Stig 🤞
Windy but a fine day Bry. 😎👌 I'll need to return to Ben Lomond some day via the Ptarmigan ridge.
Aye it's a far better approach with great views Kev, cheers mate atb Brian 👍
What a day Brian on a fantastic mountain looked hell of a windy and cold but good to see you managed to complete it as the views looked superb. Atb Ally 👌 👍
Aye tough going but a very rewarding day mate, cheers atb Brian 👍
Nice one Brian , the wind looked brutal but the views are spectacular from Ben Lomond especially in a nice crisp clear winters day .. Well done mate
Aye the wind was brutal coming up the ridge but thankfully not so bad going down the main path, but aye stunning views Stevie 👌 cheers atb Brian 👍
Windy as, rightly with ice axe, spikes, goggles etc etc, the you hit the summit and theres a wee guy with shorts and trainers 😂 unreal. great vid mate
I know Donny, we are armed to the teeth, ice axe, spikes, goggles etc etc, trying to make an epic video 📹 and we pop up at the summit 🏔 and some young guy is stoating about with a pair shorts on, making a f@ck!#g mockery of us 🤣 cheers mate 👍
@ aye but at least you wouldn’t feel like a dick if you had to call mountain rescue 👍
Looked a nice calm stroll there for you Brian 😆...glad I never went for that without the spikos! Love it up there as you know - every day a different one. Need an Ice Axe attachment for gopro...😂💖👍
Aye a bit bonkers 🤪 but good fun at the same time bud 😁

Good effort getting up there in those winds ,Brian.Lomond is a cracking mountain.Done it many times but surprisingly I have never ventured up it in winter.🫣❄️ Always amazing to see the mountain tops in their winter coat.😃👍🏴
I'm like you Andy , been up there a few times ,but I hadn't been up the Ptarmigan Ridge which i really enjoyed and the conditions just added to the challenge, cheers mate atb Brian 👍
Looks like a tough but fun day out. Sometimes it’s just nice to get out on a nearby hill, even if the weather isn’t great. Glad you still had a good time up there!
Yes your spot on, good to get out on a wee local hill away from everyday life, even if the weather is a bit indifferent 🤪 thanks very much atb Brian 👍
Alright lassies.. spook my butt.
That me and the misses up there with you guys :) cracking day most of the way up!!
Fame at last 🤣 aye it was a cracking but cold day 🥶 hope you enjoyed the video atb Brian 👍
Haha yeh great video. I'm only 6 munros in but keep threatening to take the drone up...I've got a mini 4 pro also got an fpv drone speedy bee master 5 but I'd prob trash that up there lol
It's the mini mavic 2 I have but I wouldn't mind upgrading to the mini 4 pro, it looks really good, if your just getting into your Munros 🏔 you definitely need to be taking the 4 with you and capturing some footage, as long as there's no storm Bert or Darragh kicking around that is 🤣 good luck on your Munro journey atb Brian 👍
I don’t know how I missed this one. I’ve hiked within sight of it on day hikes a few times and we’ve always commented on the name. I didn’t know it was haunted. A very decent bothy. I’ve never slept in one yet. They will be a welcome escape from the wet/cold/midges. A warm fire and a bit of camaraderie ale-assisted: what could be better!👍👏👏 Good tidy campsite/bothy ethos too. Brilliant stuff Brian.
Aye it's a cracking bothy and not too far from the main road, always a welcome escape from the cold or the midgies, a nice roaring fire and a few ales ...ahh bliss 😜 cheers Terry atb Brian 👍
Nice one Brian! any days a bangers day! good to get out as you say and keep those legs moving.. Paulo.
Definitely....cheers mate 👍
Very nice. Thank you for sharing.
You're welcome, thanks very much for watching and commenting atb Brian 👍
Nice one Brian and Frank. Some pretty rough conditions higher up, but not rough enough to stop the bangers. 😂Its good to get out and keep the hill fitness. ATB Andy

Absolutely superb Brian. Really enjoyed that. Loved the drone footage. Good seeing you back. ATVB Alan
Aye a cracking day Alan and good to be back out mate, cheers atb Brian 👍
Thanks for the video. Grew up nearby and used to cut peat on Battock, not far from the top, the low flying fighter jets would fly beneath us! Hogmanay would last for the whole of January. The roads are new, when the new laird came, lot of roads were bulldozed, as Grouse became the priority and farmers a thing of the past. Been a lot of changes there. I knew the farmer who had Mill Aucheen, Joe Menzies, the laird evicted them to use his house as a holiday home, it lay empty for years, the new laird is not keen on local people either!
Sounds like a lot of good memories, especially Hogmanay lasting the month of January 🥃😜 aye the grouse shooting has taken over big time 😢 the lairds old and new sound lovely...NOT, thanks very much for watching and commenting atb Brian 👍
Wow, what an incredible winter day on Schiehallion! ❄ Revisiting your 50th Munro with such stunning conditions must have been so special. The drone footage at the summit was absolutely breathtaking - definitely worth watching! Looked like a perfect day out in Scotland’s mountains.
Yes it was an amazing day and good to re-visit and get some views 🏔️🏔️ this time around, I'm glad you enjoyed the video, thank you so much for your kind words 🙏 atb Brian 👍
