Fraser Coast Food Forest
Australia
Приєднався 1 бер 2020
Fraser Coast Food Forest is based in Hervey Bay on the beautiful Fraser Coast in Queensland, Australia.
Hi, I'm Gareth and thanks for checking out my channel. I started Organic Growing Melbourne now Fraser Coast Food Forest back in 2019 with the sole purpose to share my experience of growing tropical fruit and creating a food forest and try to become as self sufficient as possible. I am drawn to rare, collectable fruits and I enjoy the challenge of growing something that you wouldn't normally grow.
I am by no means an expert, however over the many years of growing my own food, I have learnt and experimented with many different techniques. My main method of growing includes following permaculture principles.
In the end, I hope to have created a food forest and to have an abundance of food to feed my family and friends. Hopefully I can encourage others to follow the same method and live a healthy, sustainable lifestyle.

PLANTING SOME VEGETABLES IN THE SUBTROPICS
Cacao is a shade tree. Full sun will kill the fresh growth off before it can develop.
Looking beautiful in your yard! Can you please send spring back here?! 😄
Lol
I'll forget I watched this and re-watch it every year for the next 10 years.
Thanks mate
Everything looking great, mate. Are those Sapodillas grafted? The seedling is doing just ok here in Sydney but they grow very slow and difficult to get quality grafted plants for these. You can use a sticky solution and apply at the tree trunks. That is very effective in controlling ants, snails, slugs etc.
Thanks mate. I have 1 grafted and 1 seedling
Great walk around thanks Gareth, plenty going on 👍
Gee, I'm surprised asparagus grows well up there. I thought it needed a cool period. Thanks for the tour. Cheers!
Thanks mate
Planted some multi-embryonic mangos - hope one is true to type and I guess can graft afterwards?
Lamb is common in Cal but doesn't usually get taller than 20 feet! Good choice!
One of my favorite varieties! Both for the fruit and the tree!
I must admit I don't know ANYTHING about pollination of jackfruit Gareth but I was wondering if it might be better to have left the male flower on and run a large brush over the flowers 2 or 3 times a day over a 2 or 3 day period in case the female stigmas are more receptive at certain times of the day ? I assume if you'd left the male flowering that it might have released pollen over a longer period ?
I've managed to grab a free truckload of mulch, but it's been piled up in a driveway on a tarp for 3 months. I'm worried as I've told others to help themselves, and don't want to ruin anyones plants 😅😅
Beware use palm tree , attract termite easily.
Where are you from, where are they growing like this, because i am in melbourne trying to grow it, recently started it, would like to hear if anyone growing it in melbourne and get some tips
I think I have two issues with my work farm… Too wet and I have mites in there now. Any advice? Thanks🪱
So fortunate you can grow dragon fruits there Gareth 👍
Good selection mate, bring on the warmer weather.
👍
Very exciting Gareth Is this one you have purchased after the move My costada should pop open this weekend 🤞 Just found a bud on my scarlet also
Yes it is mate. How old is your scarlet
@@frasercoastfoodforest3092 purchased from Daley’s approx 3.5 yrs ago
Fascinating to watch that process Gareth, hopefully there will be a success story video to follow up with
Thanks mate.
Get some meal worms and they will eat out of your hands, gives them a head start. BEAUTIFUL lizards 😊
Very cool , hope it works out mate.
Thanks
Whats the average time for Blue Java to produce fruit (is there a height) mine I bought supposedly a few years ago not got any fruit but they are now over 2m high. Compared to lady finger or cavendish its pretty slow. I have a red ducca that too is pretty slow.
The blue java definitely takes longer. Mine took about 18 months. Subtropics. No frost
This fungus don’t do any good to my plants!!! They grow stunted or even die!
It's definitely not fungus. It must be something else you're doing. Sorry about your plants
@@frasercoastfoodforest3092 I am not DOING something…I am a gardener for 35 years and I have a green thumb!
Hi Gareth, what an amazing collection mate. Looks like a bumper season ahead. Mulberry in Urdu (Pakistan's national language) is called "Shahtoot". I grew up eating both white (long ones) and black vartieties. The white variety can grow into a huge tree.
Wow. That's awesome. And thanks for watching mate.
👍
Love the growth of the garden. What’s the size of your block is it 1-1.5acres? I’m in a suburban block atm and looking for some acreage as I have more trees I want to grow. I don’t think I need much more than your sized block.
I'm on just under 1 acre . But running out of space very quickly.
@@frasercoastfoodforest3092 thanks for that. It gives me something to work with. My next tree is a Kampong White Sapote. Glad to hear you speak to positively about them.
THE WHITE SAPOTE IS AMAZING @@biblicalwealth
thanks for the tour mate. Things are looking pretty good. I chose a green sapote over mamey for the reason you mentioned but it’s been growing really slowly and got stunted with cold I think.
I'm liking the idea of using the bathtub mate, as for the ants I use food grade DE to keep ants away from my pets food bowls and I also use it in my garden as an ant deterrent. Where I am in Hervey Bay the ants have been a huge problem for us, even in the house. I purchased this pet feeder stand that you can put DE on each feet and it' keeps all the ants away. So read up more on DE and as long as it's Food Grade it's safe for us and our pets and great for use in the garden. Cheers Kat.
Hey mate. Love the raw videos and watching the garden expand. Just letting you know the video cuts back and replays a section of the video @1:14:34
Thanks mate
Bet that rain is exciting right now
Mate try the Atherton Raspberry (wild raspberry), it's suited to our warmer climate. Cheers.
Cocao don't like full sun Gareth, even when they are quite big. We are getting a bit of a drenching down here as well, and it bodes well for spring growth.
I think ill get 3 or 4 and plant in different locations around the garden. thanks mate.
I'm also trying to reduce using any external fertilizers. Currently have 6 chooks so their (fresh) droppings are being used for a bit older trees. Otherwise I just use a liquid fish poo fertilizer to boost growth. For ants, I've found borax + sugar or yogurt to be very affective. They take the mixture back to their nests and spread around.
thanks again mate
All I could focus on was the star apple growing next to the tub. One of the best looking fruit trees!
Lol. That one came from you maye
Coming along nicely - warmer weather coming up so will speed things up for you.
Thanks mate
your compost and worm farm is looking awesome! I have just started the exact worm farm about 6 weeks ago but only one tier. I will do the others after work tomorrow. May buy some more bedding and worms and add more food. Love it! Thanks. I see this was done 3 years ago... are you still doing them?
Ty x your tips, appreciate it
Love this! I have two trees one is double grafted. they flower well but no fruit. Seams to be fairly common especially here in Melbourne but I’m trying anyway.
Can you post an update on this tree? What zone are you in?
Nice additions. Z4 is supposed to be a superior selection of Red Hybrid
Looking good - will be another Garden Asset.
Thanks mate
I have an old tub, going to give it a try in Florida. I have many wigglers in my back yard.
Excellent idea. I've an old bathtub left from a renovation that needs to be disposed. I guess it'll be used in another project now.
Lovely, healthy worms! ~ Sandra
Thanks
South Fl here, I want to buy a grafted tree. Do I need to buy 2 to cross pollinate? Thank u new subscriber
Just one will do mate. But 2 will help. If you have the room get 2
I've a couple; a Bunning seedling and a Costada from Daley's. Doesn't look like they'll do well in Sydney. Very slow growing.
Nice plants : I've got as many. jabs I can fit in and gone sideways to eugenics : my jab fruit are nice but quiet similar like white sapote .: I wish I had a hectare lol
They look great Gareth 👍. How fortunate that you can grow them there so easily 😁
Never heard of them, but now I want some - thanks for the Ep
Have you considered digging up the seedling jab and replacing it with a named variety? That seedling one is taking up prime real estate I reckon. I dug up and then potted up one of my seedling jabs until I found a spot I didn't mind 'wasting' on a tree that may not fruit for years (chook pen).
I haven't. But that's a great idea. Do you think it will survive the transplant
Mine did no problem. It had been in ground about 12 months. Being winter it would be a perfect time now.
@@HowlettHill thanks mate
