Madeira South to North in 2 Days
Follow us on Instaram: butwhatsoutthere
Madeira is an island off Africas west coast, surrounded by the Atlantic ocean. The islands highest peaks are the summits of volcanic mountains that have their bases on an abyssal ocean floor.
We were lucky enough to have spent a few weeks there last winter, and what better way to explore the island than to cross it by foot?
Following the unique Levadas and lonely hiking trails, this was a brutal walk from north coast to south coast, and on the peak of the highest mountain of this island, we rewarded with the most intense sunrise we’ve ever seen.
The landscape is as dramatic as it is beautiful. From the palm trees and jungles at Sea level, to the cloud forests and rugged high peaks, there’s a story to tell at every step! Starting from sea level on the south side of the island before sunrise, we climbed over 2000 meters to sleep on the peak of the Pico Ruivo, Madeiras highest mountain.
Our goal was to get down to the Sea the next day, to take a bath in the ocean during sunset
A knee-breaking 30 kilometer descent led us down into the Green valley of Sao Vicente, where we finally took a bath in the Sea on Madeiras North Coast.
The stats:
Day 1: 29.7km, 8h01, 2345m elevation gain
Day 2: 23.2km, 6h12, 554m elevation gain

12 days alone in Scandinavia's most remote wilderness - from Padjelanta to Rago
Переглядів 1,4 тис.Місяць тому
In September I hiked across the Scandinavian mountain range in 12 days. I began in Sweden's Padjelanta National Park and finished in Rago National Park in Norway. Both parks are part of the largest protected wilderness of continental Europe, which also includes the adjacent Sarek National Park and Stora Sjöfallets National Park. Padjelanta is regarded as the most remote wilderness of Scandinavi...
Bikepacking the Caucasus Crossing (off-road)
Переглядів 9832 місяці тому
The southern caucasus is a mountain range that spans 5 countries, but that is often overshadowed by the high peaks of its big brother in the north. We ventured into this lesser-known mountain range along the Georgian caucasus crossing. And together with my three new Italian friends, while fighting the steep gradients and rough mountain roads, we discovered the freedom of the high plains and vas...
CROATIA: Hiking from hut to hut in the Velebit mountains for 7 days
Переглядів 1,3 тис.6 місяців тому
- English subtitles available in the settings - At the end of March 2024 I traveled down to Croatia with trains and buses to the wonderful Velebit mountain range. The nature in these mountains is protected by several National Parks and Nature Parks and they include some ancient old growth forests. Therefore the Velebit mountains are a refuge for true wilderness, which is increasingly rare in Eu...
CRAZY Caucasus off-road BIKEPACKING: Pt. II (Svanetis Snowy Peaks)
Переглядів 1,3 тис.8 місяців тому
In the second part of the Georgian Caucasus Crossing, Gian and I met up with Carlo and Lorenzo, two Italian friends of him. The epic bikepacking route led up multiple 2.000m@Passes passes and down crazy singletrail descents, that you would normally ride on a mountain bike. It was a wild adventure, where we often rode into the dark to find a place to sleep along the steep mountain faces. All tha...
Quiet Hiking along Corsica's West Coast
Переглядів 4538 місяців тому
In August of 2023, I hiked alone for 5 days along the North-West coast of Corsica. I began the hike in a town called Porto and finished in Galéria. Both places are accessible by hitchhiking or by bus. The coast between these two towns is almost completely wild and unaltered by humans. It is also extremely rugged with steep cliffs and mountains of red granite extending into the sea. A hiking tra...
Bikepacking the Caucasus (Off-road): Atsunta Pass Adventure

Georgia’s Atsunta pass - one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done on a bike. This film is part of a trilogy about a month-long bikepacking adventure across the Georgian Caucasus last summer. Do you have questions on the bike setup? Are you interested in videos about what I take on adventures like these? Let me know in the comments below! From the hustle and bustle of Tbilisi to the quiet...
Henrik Goes [Bikepacking] Racing! - ep. 1
Переглядів 3239 місяців тому
This is a new little series to introduce you to the world of Bikepacking racing. For the first time ever, I am taking part in a Bikepacking race - a mixture of bike travelling and bike racing! I've done some long-distance cycling and used to race road bikes as a teenager- but this still is a new world for me! So I am far from an expert in the matter, but would like to share everything I learn h...
Quiet hiking in the Swiss Alps - 3 days alone through the mountains
Переглядів 2,1 тис.10 місяців тому
In July 2023 I hitchhiked to Switzerland with some friends to attend a music festival. After 5 intense and joyful days of dancing, I was looking forward to go wander into the quiet mountains by myself. A woman who was also leaving the festival gave me a ride to the starting point of my hike, a small village called Nufenen and she also gave me some food and a beer :) I chose to hike along a vall...
180km across Corsica on the GR20 Hiking Trail
Переглядів 12 тис.10 місяців тому
(English subtitles available in settings) For 15 days I hiked 180 kilometers across the Mediterranean island of Corsica. I completed this hike in September 2023 as part of a longer Solo-backpacking trip through Southern France and Corsica. The video speaks for itself, this island is simply incredible and I cannot recommend this hike enough. In recent years, this trail has gained more and more a...
Kayaking a wild river in Sweden
Переглядів 22211 місяців тому
This is the small river Emån in the Swedish region Småland. For one day, I kayaked a section of roughly 14km on this river, which flows through wild and jungle-like forests. In August the river doesn't carry much water, so very often I had to get out of my kayak and pull it across the rocks. A really fun little adventure!

In June 2023, my friend Châu and me hiked through the mountains of the Swiss Alps for 5 days, while trying to find, identify and admire as many flowers as possible. Alone for 4 days - Canoeing and camping on uninhabited islands in Sweden
Переглядів 519Рік тому
In August, I ventured out into the wilderness of Sweden for 3 nights, this time with a canoe on a large freshwater lake (my favorite lake in the whole world) that is full of uninhabited islands and at the same time a nature reserve. This is no action packed adventure or a survival situation. Just me enjoying the calmness and beauty of the Swedish nature :)
Can I make it to Copenhagen?

Riding my bike from north of the polar circle to Copenhagen: 1800km in 10 days - in October: rain, cold and darkness. An epic bikepacking trip. Why did I take this on me? In July 2021, I set out on the biggest challenge of my life: To ride around Scandinavia by bike, within 30 days. 200km, every single day. I was supported by a crew of friends, who took care of food, water, filming, setting up ...

4x2 moment and say in the negative on r/v
Thank you for the video. It is inspiring and encouraging. I am planning to do it in October of this year. Any recommendations? I have been paying attention to the weather and already have a book guide. Your video has given a broader understanding of the hiking. Thanks again.
Stunning, a school teacher did this in 1984 or so, been on my mind ever since. Been to Corsica twice but not for hiking. Thanks for sharing.
What an adventurous way to explore Madeira in such a short time! It must have been quite a journey to experience both the south and north of this beautiful island. I enjoy following your travels! 💖
Wow, absolut atemberaubende Filmaufnahmen einer wunderschönen Landschaft und einer großartigen Wanderung. Danke, dass du uns hast daran teilhaben lassen!
Super video. Koji ti je bio plan za 8 dana? Ja imam želju prehodati VPP.
Very nice video
Hey I’m thinking about hiking 5/6days of the GR20, would you recommend hiking mostly the northern or southern part of the route? I’ve seen people hike vizzavona to conza in 5 days
Hi, sorry for the late reply. For 5/6 days the southern half from vizzavona to Conca is definitely better, it’s the shorter „half“ and has less elevation gain (although still very mountainous because it’s still Corsica :D)
nice video! GSB in Polonia ....
So cool
How did you know if the water was safe to drink?
All water is safe to drink in the north of Sweden, in streams and lakes😊
@@NotSeriousAlena That is lucky for you! Nice!
Wow, I didn't know just how beautiful Madeira is! Thanks for the lovely video 🙂👍
Diese Vielfalt an Landschaften ist ja unglaublich, Laubwälder und tropische Vegetation nebeneinander! Und superschöne Wanderwege & so gut gelaunte Wanderer trotz der Strapazen;-)), herrlich!
I think you took "lets go get these knees f* up" to literally 🙃
Super nice! Love the video <3
thank you! :)
It is such an amazing beautiful Island. I did some hiking there many years ago so it was nice to remember it all again. Thanks 😊
It is! I also felt like going back while editing the video, since it's already a year ago...
@butwhatsoutthere Times fly....
This was an entrancing film and I really enjoyed it. Thankyou so much.
This is such a beautiful part of Scandinavia. Enjoyed watching your awsome video. I have hiked here many times so it was great to see it all again. Thanks 😊😊😊 Wish you a wonderful day
Thank you! Yeah Laponia is amazing. I will keep coming back :)
I love Norway
Nice work mate, I'm from Australia so very enjoyable seeing such different but stunning scenery.
Been there twice in 1990's, from Rago, across Padjelanta, into Sarek, and then back, solo. In those days almost completely undeveloped with no bridges and barely any trails, especially in Sarek. The days of youth and its crazy courage, wading rivers just meters away from the waterfall edge. Probably never felt as much alive as then and there. Thank you for the reminder.
Wow sounds like a great adventure! It’s such a special experience to be in this massive wilderness
This was just wonderful! And now I have a new place I want to explore. Thank you!
Wow congrats brother, very well put together, what a beautiful area. Strong intro. Recommend tweaking your title slightly to bring the "12 Days" bit closer to beginning of title. It's a big selling point, "12 Days Alone" = Not your standard youtube adventure video if that makes sense 🙂 Subbed and will be following you
Good idea, thanks for the tip!
@@butwhatsoutthere you got it bud
Just WOW 😍
Great video loved every scenery
Unfassbare Bilder und Filmaufnahmen dieser großartigen Landschaften! Ich bin völlig hin und weg! 🤩🙏🏻
This is brilliant. Thanks for sharing
Beautiful video about a place I hadn't known before. Great job.
Best video yet Finn. Loved the cinematography truly amazing
Thank you Dixie :)
Velebit I love it very much. Wenn you once came to the Velebit you gonna return for sure.
Absolutely amazing scenery my friend! This looks brilliant, outstanding cinematography!
Thank you!! Very happy to hear it :)
What a wonderful adventure! Love your words on the effects of being alone in nature :* Think I'll be hiking there next year :D
thank you! yeah you’ll feel right at home out there
Oktober '21 sind wir auch in Calenzana gestartet. Aus der Kälte Deutschlands noch einmal zurück in den Sommer, mit einem Glücksgefühl und Überwältigung. Ich werde nie vergessen wie schön es war. GR20 immer wieder
This for sure is one of the best videos about the GR20 on UA-cam. I really liked the storytelling.
Early spring is not a good time to hike Velebit. Its better to do that in late May or early June. Also Oktober is a very good time. The colours of nature are way better than in March or April. 😉
Thanks for the tips, I'm sure you're right! I will certainly come back some day to see the mountains in different colours. I just had some free time last spring and wanted to hike somewhere that wasn't full of snow like the Alps. Still I really enjoyed my time in Velebit :)
Nádherné video .... 🤩
These wide landscapes are so breathtaking! What a beautiful and emotional ride for you all!
absolutely:)
Inspiring 🔥🔥
thank you!
beautiful!
thanks!
Beautiful hike, made me think about my next trip.... Thanks!
Hello, We are the team from the new variety show "Living in Finland's rented room" on tvN, a South Korean television network. Our program was filmed this summer in Kemijärvi and Posio in Finnish Lapland with famous korean actors like Cha Eun-woo, Kwak Dong-yeon, Lee Je-hoon and Lee Dong-hwi. We would like to inquire about using this video on our show. The videos will be used to introduce the feature of Finnish Lapland. I would appreciate it if you could reply regarding the use of the source. Thank you! p.s. If you need more information we could email you!
What a dude! Just subscribed, thought this was beautiful mate & I am so adding this to the bucket list 🌟
Thanks a lot! Hope you get to do it too some day :)
One can also use small wood stoves like Firebox Original or Nano to burn small twigs found on the ground. I myself prefer to use my trusted Optimus Svea 123 R white gas stove fueled by "eco friendly" petrol for 4-stroke lawn movers (or the more expensive Coleman fuel). Being a small and very reliable stove in most weather conditions and altitudes, it has been a popular choice for many hikers and mountain climbers since 1955 (!)
that's true, I forgot to include wood stoves!
Man, keep it up!!! You’ve found a great company of friends along the way. What an adventure!
classic Bulgarian potholes. Sorry!
haha no worries, as a cyclist one should always watch out for them. Most of all I'm grateful how quickly people came to help me, called an ambulance for me and translated for us. So in a way this incident improved my perception of Bulgaria :)
Hello hiking friend. This is a very well done video. I enjoy your story telling and production. You have a new subscriber! I look forward to seeing more of your content. ❤
Great photography of a superb route. I have walked over the GR20 a number of times both the complete route and parts with additions of the Mare a Monte and Mare a Mare routes too. I never tire of the Island......
Nice video! One question: how much of a pain are the street dogs? any sketchy situation?
thanks! Yes, there were quite a lot of sketchy situations. If you're afraid of dogs, it's not good to do a bike trip there... I never actually got a bite, but one of my friends had a crash due to a dog chasing him, and if you're on a busy street and they come out of nowhere, you have to be careful not to accidentally swerve into traffic to avoid the dogs. But basically if you shout at them, or threaten to throw something, they will stay away, so it's manageable and you'll get used to deal with them!
1:30 I used to work at Envoy hostel ✌ Glad you enjoyed Georgia 🚲
I did very much enjoy Georgia!
Thanks for video! I liv here 3 years.
