Zaya (Abandoned) Run Through of Several Level Iterations
Just me trying to run through different iterations of the abandoned Zaya game prototype engine. Created to be like a generated action level with a gimmick to each room, which in hindsight got very tedious. It never got very varied, but it had some changes to it. At the end I just keep trying several times to make the succubus/incubus enemy appear.
As is probably evident, the game engine started as a Metroid spoof.
Sorry the framerate didn't capture very well.

Zaya (Abandoned) Easy Mode Run-Through
Переглядів 5 тис.5 років тому
A video showing the prototype game loop of my 2015 project "Zaya - Spacetime Queen". It had a lot of flow problems, and I went back to Iconoclasts eventually. I also had to play on the easy setting to be able to make it through, haha. As is probably evident, the game engine started as a Metroid spoof. Sorry the framerate didn't capture very well.

Just drawing the motif people seem to associate me with, hah. far from my best work, but it was fast (for me) to do. But this is basically the way I draw my basic art.

Years ago I wanted to attempt a remake/sequel to my 2007 game "Chalk". I didn't finish, obviously, but I made some music I like for it. Here's the second level track (excuse the slight stutter at the loop point, didn't find my source files for these).

Why isn't this trailer on your Steam page? This is one of the hypest trailers- it still gets me fired up.
After making a masterpiece "iconoclasts" this man decided to make a new concept for a really interesting looking game and then vanished from existence
best game ever
Cuando llegas por primera vez, es simplemente genial, porque esta con todo la batalla y la música, deje el juego hace tiempo, creo que volveré 😊
Konjak, I know how hard the development and aftermath of this game were on you, I just want to thank you for making one of my favourite games ever. This game will forever hold a special place in my heart, in big part because of the soundtrack. Your game is one of very few where the story kept me going more so than the gameplay, that's not to say the gameplay was bad or mediocre, far from it, it's really really good and it's got great gamefeel, it's just that the story is so incredibly amazing, it's unique with likeable characters, amazing twists and setpieces. Even after all these years, it's stayed with me. I don't know if the hardships were worth it for you. But you can forever be proud of making one of the best games out there. Thank you for sharing this game with the world. I wish you nothing but the best in life.
It has been 6 years and I still re-play this game every new year. One of the best games I've ever played.
iconoclasts really is one of the best games I've ever played and I think about it all the time. Rewrote my brain chemistry. It's got such stellar writing and characters and it's so layered in its critiques of evangelism and choosing your role in a world where everyone wants to assign you as something. Brilliant game. I tell everybody I meet to play it.
Where are you?
You changed the HUD in this update
i feel so sad that I didn't know about it until 2024.😥😥😥😥
How dare you put royal as the thumbnail after what you made me do to him
Don't know I'm trippin cause the mandela effect, but I swear I saw a poster of Iconoclasts in Mile's room from Spiderverse 2 movie. Insane. <3 <3
Herogest if you have it mind passing me a demo of it please.
I love the ShockWood theme!
I don't know how or when I found out about this game or when I bought it some years ago, but I finally got around to playing it and I'm glad I did. It was decent, extraordinary for a single dev indie game. But something weird about it like someone for whom english is not their first language is trying to speak to you from underwater. All the right components for great gameplay and story are here but there's something amiss with the execution of them. The gameplay never really takes off unrestrained, the rewards for exploring aren't really useful, and the story is written quite awkwardly with too many hypocritical characters. But everything else is unique and pretty cool especially the sound design.
Every song is a masterpiece! I highly enjoy it. :D
You didn't learn anything about metroid fusion. Iconoclast has a terrible game design.
7:50 I get what you're going for with the getting hit montage, but each of those attacks in Metroid Fusion is 100% avoidable. Each of them just requires you to learn the movements and behavior of the boss. •The Varia Core X follows the AI of a normal Core-X, but gets repelled by charge shots. Shooting it with a charge shot will knock it away before it hits you, and you have time to charge up another before it tries to ram you again. •Nightmare is a large and fast target that also follows the AI of a Core X when it does that attack, with the difference being you have no way to repel it. The Space Jump is your friend here, as well as ensuring you have good positioning before he starts doing that attack. •Just Zazabi's Core-X. Strange that these don't seem to be any any particular order, chronologically or difficulty-wise. Anyway, Core-Xs' floaty movement can be a bit weird to grasp at first, but as long as you don't get cornered and stay mobile you can juke them pretty successfully. Don't be too quick to take every opportunity to immediately fire a missile at them once their I-frames run out- instead, choosing to fire a well-timed missile knocks them away and will save you from getting hit. •Ah Serris, my favorite. When I was young I used to reset my game boy every time I beat him so I could fight him again, he was that fun to learn how to fight. Anyway, he has a fixed amount of patterns. All of them except one can be avoided by hanging from the ladder at the top of the chamber, from which you can place well-timed shots into his head. The one attack is the one that was shown the video where he hops between platforms, which if you're hanging from the ladder is a tell that he is about to go across the ceiling and that you need to drop down.
Just bought and beat this on my vita on a whim because I had a Metroidvania itch. This game has single-handedly reinvigorated my love for indies and is one of the best I have ever played. Just want to add while playing I recognized this game’s awesome art design and action style was really similar to noitu love devolution which I played many years ago in middle school. It was really cool to find out you were behind both games. It’s funny how I came full circle haha that game always stuck with me. I really love your work Joakim.
Bought the game last Saturday and having a great time with it this week and probably will complete it this weekend. Great 2D pixel art and backgrounds with alot of bosses to fight big and small with puzzles elements for some of them. It's definitely up there with some of best metroidvania games and I would recommend to anybody as it's a amazing fun game.
What is the name of the sountrack?
@konjakonjak can you make a part two of this game in this 2023?
fark. a few years too late. bro and i have been deep in monster hunter fashion ...slowing down to arcade fun titles. Is there 3D effect or should I just buy this on the WiiU? keep it creative inspired
The sound effects are so crazy and I love it. I hope this game sees the light of day someday with at least this much intensity. Pizza Tower shows how much potential there is left in fast paced side scrollers.
It has been a long time since I last watched this. Very useful information for my current game project!
*"Approximately"* one frame.
This reminds me of Shantae and Mighty Switch Force.
Después de termina iconiclast dónde estás
Still one of the best games I've ever played. This trailer and music should have been put into the actual game. Got this game for free on PS, bought it on Xbox. And I'd buy it again and again. Bought the sound track on band camp. This is a game I'll always come back to.
I played the demo, thought it was cute and very light hearted with all the colorful background and that Blockrock music. Bought the full game. "I've been tricked, I've been backstabbed and I've been quite possibly, bamboozled"
I expected Chrome to be more like a middle aged man but in this he looks much younger
Man, i'd wish that he made a sequel
Its a shame that the video of the destroyed earth with one of the arks leaving was cutted out ofthe game
I loved Iconoclasts and I love Metroid. You have my dollars if this gets released one way in the future, the sound design is very yummy. The idea of a Metroid inspired room progression action platformer seems really cool. Especially if power ups and rooms get shuffled.
...did you just try to combine Metroid with Smash TV's level structure, but randomly generated? That sounds pretty interesting, if you know what you're doing. I can understand why this was abandoned. It's difficult to focus at some of this footage, and some random elements like Crash the Crush and lightning don't mix well. It might benefit from an arcadey weapon-powerup system, preferably one where the powerup-drop can let you choose which weapon you want by shooting the powerup, like in Alien Soldier or something.
"My name is Billie and I call myself Billie 'cause my name is Billie and I will become someone else".
Thankfully this music was used in the game. I really wished he used a lot of the character art and video character animations for trailers in the game. Either way he done a fucking amazing job.
This music and video should have been used as an opening in the game.
really great game and groovy soundtrack. Will def be revisiting when I get the time for a third playthrough
it's lovely to see this, could had been a full game
Definitely one of the best indie game soundtracks I've ever heard
36 the best one
You are a legend you made iconoclasts one of the best games , But i have one question where is iconoclasts 2? And where are you?
I don't think Iconoclasts 2 will ever be made, the story wrapped itself up pretty nicely. As for their absence, I hope they haven't given up on game design. Their work is some of the finest indie development I've ever seen. It'd be a shame to see that talent dissappear.
My favorite boss battle of all time
Still a fantastic soundtrack, all these years later. I remember playing a beta version of Iconoclasts back around 2014 and loving it from the start. Been a fan of the game and it's music ever since. To this day, it's quite possibly my favorite indie game--thanks largely to the fact that it's so good, it never feels like an indie game! Whether I'm playing my PC copy, or my Nintendo Switch copy, when I see the main menu glow to life on the screen, it feels like it belongs there.
It was designed four years before release and got only a slither of changes which is pretty cool! I expected it to be much more different than what we got in the end, just like the HUD which changed drastically, the only things changed are the music (only slightly), the attack indicators became more recognizable and the boss's texture seems to be brighter than the final version, its pretty great seeing how the game looked before!
Hej, säg inte "Bleh". Daisy forever! Schyst stil du har.
This game is so awesome! I just had to buy the soundtrack on Steam after finishing it on Switch.
I gotta say, "Ways Lost" (1:46:51) is probably my unexpected favorite song out of all of these. It's just musically really interesting and atmospheric while being very simple arrangement-wise. Brings to mind some songs in a relatively unknown PS2 game, Jade Cocoon 2. I also love the corrupted and weak version of Robin's theme in "Conscience". And somehow "Family" and "Greater Good" have lodged themselves in my subconscious where they'll just start to play sometimes. :D
