    16 minutes and so much explanation that will never turn a low class bad customer into an understanding one. But I guess it may sway the decent ones that may just be a little ignorant. There are people out there who would deny anyone and everyone an honest living if they could. If they had the drive and ability, and weren’t just talk they would learn about auto mechanics, hvac, plumbing, carpentry, appliances and fix it all themselves, all the while in spite of being the local grocer or something complaining that his business is slow because nobody can afford the groceries since he took all their jobs. This was clearly a sensationalized narrative, many times these people aren’t grocers or offer much of anything back to the general public! 😂

  • @alejandromata825
    @alejandromata825 Місяць тому

    You can probably save on that after hours call center by just forwarding voicemail messages to the on-call tech! It still doesn’t mean that tech doesn’t deserve time and a half round trip pay for getting dragged out after hours so your customer still has to pay. 😂 Never blow your customers off with your techs lips, or your own for that matter!

    That is the cost of doing business. In years past businesses took out ads in newspapers weekly. They purchase billboards. They had flyers in marriage mail. The website you’re doing now is far less expensive. Explain to me how going out and putting a capacitor in that cost $12-$15 can justify a $500 bill to homeowner? i’ve heard them on the weekend at night in a senior neighborhood to be charged $2000. That is criminal.

    • @alejandromata825
      @alejandromata825 Місяць тому

      I don’t know who these people are but I have never charged more than 160-180 for any single capacitor. Now devil being in the details, was it and old unit that needed a cap and a hard start for the compressor? Maybe it also needed a fan capacitor? Now you might be getting into the $500 range with parts! And moving on to seniors or anybody for that matter after hours. Our after hours rate for residential is $180/hr with a minimum of two hours just to cover the drive time to and from, tricounty metropolitan area, traffic it is what it is. The CBA actually says emergencies are portal to portal so depending on traffic and actual distance the trip could actually be more than 2 hours! High traffic metro areas are completely different from suburban or rural areas with less traffic! And the most important point of all is what incentive does a technician have to get dragged out at 10 or 11pm or later, or on the weekends to deal with someone who doesn’t want to properly pay for that service? Old, not old, your AC breaks on a Friday or Saturday night in the sweltering summer and the techs AC works! The company’s owner might be willing to compel their employees to run emergency calls for less but how long before those techs which may be pretty good leave to another shop? You have a need and you call for help, you can choose to accept it or decline. We let you know what the hourly is but we can’t really know what is wrong until we get there. The truth is you really can’t tell someone else what they can and can’t charge in their business unless you absolutely know all the details and how that particular market works. You could end up calling someone a crook and then find yourself telling the next 20 guys the same thing because their pricing is similar. That and it’s just not a stand up thing to do!

    I appreciate the info you put in here man. It’s discouraging to see all the comments from people that either don’t seem to understand or don’t want to understand…but that’s a problem that will iron itself out in a few years. Between R22 and R410A being phased out, The average homeowner and DIYer is going to be in for a nasty reawakening with everything going full-on communicating, VFD and inverter-driven systems for the sake of efficiency. People complain about pricing now calling it a “ripoff” but I honestly believe it will come to a point where the average homeowner simply isn’t going to be able to afford to have unsubsidized cooling and heating.

    The homeowner, the keyboard warrior, googlers, and non professional always knows more than the actual professional business/ service tech. All those associated business costs are expected. Charge accordingly ! When i have to pay for services, i have to pay.(bank fees, cell/cable, insurances, vehicle,taxes, milk, school, tools, training, etc) Big businesses have multiple buildings, CEOs making millions, private booths at stadiums, jets/super yachts. These folks complain that i want to be able to have a home, pay my bills on time, family vacations, and a retirement plan. Know your numbers, charge accordingly ! You have an electrical/ mechanical fault. The investment to make you happy. Comfortable, safe again will be $xxxx. Never give them the opportunity to order part online. If you diagnose it, and they refuse you to do. And they fix themselves, If they get shocked, cause a fire, or additional damage, They will have a lawyer/ law enforcement following up with you because you "the professional" told them what was wrong. Be smart. Know your worth. Charge accordingly.

    So I had an issue with my furnace this year. Turns out the inducer motor wasn't initiating, and the board on the gas valve controlled this. I was quoted 950 before taxes to replace this part, and so I declined and did some more research. The part was 350 online, so I bought it along with materials and two pipe wrenches, all equaling around 450. It took me about 2 hours to fix the issue. Overall, I paid 90 for the service call and 450 for the fix. I can not understand why it would cost around 500 for 2 hours of labor. You could say 4 hours total for a technician to get the call, diagnose the issue, and fix it.

    Thanks @Honesthvacguy, you saved me a ton of money and headaches! I had a cracked and leaking condensate pan on my furnace, exactly like the one you replaced in this video. The company that installed the furnace wanted over $1000 to do the exact repair you did in your video in 50 minutes. I couldn't stomach that, so got online, found the part, and got it delivered for $160. However, after I installed it, the thing had a very, very loud whistle, so loud I could hear it a block away. So I thought I had gotten a defective part, and was going to try to get another one. (It still would have whistled, though, I'm sure.) The key was to remove that yellow disc in the inducer motor intake, as you showed in the video. For some reason that restrictor disc doesn't cause a whistle with the old transparent yellow pan, but it sure does with the black replacement pan! After I watched the video, I took out the inducer motor, removed the disc, and presto, the whistle was gone. I originally didn't want to do this job myself. If the HVAC company had given me a reasonable price, I would happily have let them do the repair, but their quote was outrageous, and I knew it. Needless to say, I won't be giving them my business any more. Thank you again for your video!

But testing it’s voltage (one sided ~28v and both (close to 0v drop) it check out fine, same with resistance (close to 0 ohm) and continuity (has continuity). But the furnace will run for anywhere from 5-30 min then shut off. I think eventually it goes into lockout and won’t run at all until rebooted. Any suggestions ?

    Don’t forget that the technician gets hourly pay for lots of hours that he didn’t bill. Maybe it’s slow. Maybe he takes holidays and vacations. Maybe he spends time working in the shop. Non billable hours. And then what profit you do get to keep, you split that with Uncle Sam! And the one tax that makes me the maddest is the county taxes that charge by the sales price no matter what your expenses were! And most people buy a hammer and they pay a tax when they buy it. We have to pay taxes on that hammer each and every year! And then you have to pay your cpa thousands and thousands to figure what your taxes will be! Plus you got payroll taxes too and you gotta pay for the payroll. I did like your video though. I like you too. I’d love to hire someone like you!

    No wonder Internet sales for those HVAC parts and equipments are booming. Let's take an example, if Amazon is using that method and passing the cost to customers, you will never be able to buy an item for $30 dollars delivered to your door, imaging all the men hrs put in just to deliver an item to your door, not to mention the cost of running a amazon company and the cost of making the item. You can't just use that method to justify the marked up price. All those costs are called an investment into a business, and hopefully there is profit at the end. Anyway, I hope that kind of marked up business model is working out for HVAC industry, because when things are getting expensive and unaffordable, people will look for alternatives such as learning and servicing their HVAC equipment themself. It's not that hard.

    I love when a homeowner calls and before even telling you the problem they are having, they ask you how much will it cost to come out, and when you tell them your diagnostic fee they say “they’ll call you back”. The best is when you diagnose a homeowners faulty part and give them the cost of the part and they turn their phone around to show you how much cheaper they can get the part for on Amazon. My all time favourite is when you’ve competed your job, invoiced and collected the homeowner says, “hey, while your here would you just mind checking” and expect a free service of something else.
