Ladderback Jacquard knitting tutorial for stranded knitting
Ladderback Jacquard is a great technique for catching long floats in stranded knitting so they don't show through on the other side. This tutorial will explain why I recommend using it, and how to work it both flat and in the round. I also share a technique that makes it easier for telling apart your ladderback jacquard stitches from your regular stitches, to help you avoid mixing them up and messing up your color chart!

Would love to see the pattern! You made something beautiful🥰
@@margalliti thank you so much!! it’s called the “tied & true cardigan” and is available on my website (starcrossedknits . com) or ravelry & etsy 💗
Where do I get the pattern? Thanks
@@Step2Rhonda it’s available on my website and on ravelry! it’s called the “tied & true cardigan” by starcrossed knits 💗
Wow, this was a great tutorial for making buttonholes on a double knitted buttonband!!! I am going to use your example when I put in my buttonholes!!❤
This is the best button band tutorial, thank you soooo much for posting this. I've already used it twice for my projects!
Wow I would love to have this knitting space!
Hi! I would just like to say that I don't think the Hourglass sweater you mention at 6:54 is actually available? I cannot find it, and several other people on the Raverly page say the same thing. The only thing I've found about it is a list of corrections, along other corrections for other patterns. I saw in the projects that some people have completed the sweater after 2018 (when I think it was pulled from the internet), but I'm not sure where or how long they've had the pattern. Did you find the pattern? Thanks:)
@@emiknits02 Oh no, bummer! I try not to share patterns that are unavailable but I made this video 10 months ago so I can’t really remember at this point, sorry! I like to include things for the inspiration as well, like to highlight various elements that characters tend to wear, even if you’re not able to literally recreate it
i’m a beginner knitter and i’ve been struggling with long tail cast on for soo long 😭😭 your explanation of it was so easy to understand 🫶🏾🫶🏾🫶🏾 i can’t wait to finish my headband
@@tejirid that makes me so happy!!!!
Can I buy the pattern somewhere?? This video is amazing! so interesting to see how to design something from scratch! I have few my own top ideas but I'm begginer in knitting and don't know techniques enough I feel, like how to predict how many decreases to do and on each rows to get shape I want (trapeze in this case) but I also have in plan some cutouts above the neckline etc :)
@@user-hi5rk7eg2g sorry no i never made a pattern for it!! this video wasn’t that popular for whatever reason so i havent done many more looks into designing but maybe something i’ll revisit again in the future!
Your gorgeous 😊❤
thank you ☺️
Thank you for this tutorial ❤ I learnt a lot! This technique is a game changer 💪
@@malgorzatasenderek6981 I’m so glad it was helpful!! my favorite colorwork technique by far, so I’m really happy to share it with others 🥰
I am a very very beginner knitter and was wondering what those stitch is called that gives this braid design ? Is it possible to do double knitting without the wired needles
by braid design, do you mean the v-shaped stitches? that's called a "knit" stitch :) and yes you totally can, just follow the beginning steps with your needles, and skip the chapters "knitting in the round" and "casting off in the round"
@@starcrossedknits yes Thank you so much
What a cute sweater and bag. Love your designs and I love the video! I really want to try these patterns out! They look really interesting and fun! Did you line your bag?
thanks so much! i did line my bag, i just used some spare cotton fabric and whip-stitched it to the inner top hem of the bag
The best LBJ tutorial I found yet!! I love your tarot card designs. Are the patterns gender neutral? Also, are the bust sizes in your chart the finished size? Thanks
Aw I'm so glad! Yep the bust sizes in the chart are the finished size. The sweater doesn't have any bust shaping for instance, but I haven't designed mens' sweaters before so I'm not 100% sure on what qualifies something as gender neutral or not.. I would check against the sizing chart, and if you want to adjust I'm happy to help advise (eg for broader shoulders, larger biceps, longer arms, whatever)!
Love this video and thank you for mentioning a good learning video for beginners

made so many variations with this pattern. i luv it so muchhh❤❤❤
aw that makes me so happy!!
This tutorial was a lifesaver! Most clearly-explained instructions I’ve seen specifically for the buttonhole side.
How did you make this? Is it intarsia or sticking in the seperate colours? I’m trying to learn how to knit and I really wanted to try something like this!
this is using stranded knitting with 3 colors per row (dark green, light green, and white) plus a little bit of duplicate stitch for embroidering in the red and blue flower afterwards :)
When picking up stitches do you still pick up one stitch on the point where the v-neck starts?
by “where the v-neck starts” do you mean the bottom of the v neck like at the front? if so then yes. if you mean where the front shoulder stitches meet the back of the neck, then no you could skip a stitch there
And are you blocking your cardigan before you make the border band?
@@MyYvonne45 personally i did not- but i did block my gauge swatches, for both the cardigan and the double-knitting gauge swatch (as many people have different tension in double knitting, and you want the row gauge to match or you want to pick up according to the row gauge ratio). i prefer to block once everything is complete!
There was a sweater designed from this tapestry back in the 1980s. It won a contest in a major knitting/craft magazine of the time. I believe Perry Ellis also put out a sweater at the time that had the unicorn from this tapestry on it, too. What’s old is new again.
It’s definitely overdue for a revamp. I’m thinking maybe the magazine was McCalls Needlework and Crafts.
i saw that one, someone posted it on reddit sometime last year! love that this tapestry has been inspiring fiber & textile fans for decades, it’s such a special piece! i was a big fan of it for many years before i ever picked up a knitting needle. personally i am really drawn to the density of all the flowers in the garden so the 80s one didn’t speak to me quite as much, its more spaced out with large flowers
@@starcrossedknits Yeah, I wasn’t excited by the 80s one. If I’m remembering correctly it also had a white background which just felt off somehow. Looking forward to seeing what you do with it in the end. :)
Is there a pattern for the bag? Also I love the way you pronounce your name. My cousin is the only other person I know who says it that way. ❤
i haven't released it yet but i want to sometime later this month or in july, i just got sidetracked with getting out some other patterns first! and aw i love that your cousin says it this way too, it seems like the less common pronunciation! i was named after my grandmother ♥
❤❤❤
Why do we choose a double knit band?
it looks like stockinette stitch, but lays flat (unlike stockinette, which curls). so it's a nice option when you don't want the look of a ribbed button band :) i think it adds a really nice and neat looking finished edge
Because it's pretty and gives the sweater a polished finish
I don't think I'll ever knit a Ranunculus sweater/top - I just don't think they are attractive. Also, I don't get the combining mohair with other yarn in a project, I'm just not going to do it.
agreed on the ranunculus 🫣 i like mohair held with other things but i probably use it less than a lot of other knitters
Stunning !
I keep my notions in old tins too! ❤
So gorgeous 🌿🤍 I’ve never knit with mohair but this is inspiring me to!
it gives this super delicate sheer halo effect, it's so pretty!
OBSESSED <3
So you guys spring isn't 30° C??? 😂😂😂
hahah well maybe just the last outfit with the necklace works for your climate! where i live spring temperatures jump around a lot, last night was 10º C and tomorrow is 30º!
the firsttt one!! omg
thank you!! that one’s my own design 🥹🤍
That cardigan is stunning! They all look so soft 😍
thank you so much!! can confirm extreme softness 😌
You did the tied and true top with mohair?
yes it’s a single strand of mohair on 4.5mm needles, that’s what makes it a little sheer!
I’m with you on the requested gift knits. I used to do them. That stopped when I realized how much I hated the process of knitting for someone else when I have a TBK list a mile long full of projects that I want to knit for myself. I mean to hate yourself for saying yes at every other stitch is wild! But the lesson learned had staying power. I even had to put my foot down with a boss who tried to gaslight me into knitting her a replica of a scarf that took me forever to knit in fingering weight yarn. 🤨 It’s the feeling entitled to other people’s hard work and precious time for me! Forget your money! Chiiilllleeee!
right?? i feel like it was always the random coworkers demanding stuff too hahah like as if i would ever expect them to spend HOURS of their personal free time on me?!
I found this very clear. I was especially looking for the buttonholes part. That's well explained. Thank you
so happy it could help!!
I like cotton socks. Finding yarn to do that is hard, so I just buy my socks.
Amazing tutorial! You have skills! Thank you for this video😊
Aw thanks so much, so happy if it could help!
omg a very nice video, very detailed! gave me inspiration to pick up my needles again
In order to use up my stash I picked up crochet! Much easier for me to use with smaller projects, gifts, and home decor rather than trying to create a large garment
that's a really good idea!! i do think home decor seems like a good option for some of the random colors i have that probably wouldn't fit into the rest of my wardrobe!
This tutorial was a lifesaver. Thank you for keeping this accessible to everyone instead of just people who purchased the pattern :)
of course! i'm so glad it was helpful!!
These are so gorgeous!
Are these all yours/original?
yes these are all my own designs that i knit myself! 💗
All I can think about is how much money that is, especially all of that silk. Also made me realize I’ve never seen pure silk yarn before
I'm painting my room tomorrow. yours look great.
