Such great information I love little hobbies like this. I am also into fountain, pens, straight, razor, shaving, and collecting all Gillette safety razors. Use traditional, shave soap and a badger brush as well. I love old-school things. I also roll my own cigarettes and use a zippo, but I want to get into old vintage lighters as well.

I lost the spring the spring where the needle valve couples with the flame adjustment. Next to impossible to find a replacement where i am. What alternative solution might you offer? Thanks.

I inherited a dunhill from the 40s some years ago it needed some love and care of I remember correctly I sent it off to Dunhill where they conditioned it for very little money I don't smoke so it's been put away for another time

Thanks for this video. Disappointed you didn't make more of them for the Rollagas, but I get the frustration. A main tip that I can offer for your focus issues is you need to play by the rules that auto-focus uses if you're going to use auto-focus. When you're trying to show something like this lighter in the foreground, you can't have objects in the background, such as the keyboard, butane and tools. The camera does not know that you're not trying to show those things. If that's not practical and you are trying to shoot your active workspace and its not focusing on the right thing, the easiest thing to do is just put your hand behind what you want to show, to temporarily block the things that the camera is actually focusing on.

'Am an old time lighter collector (65-70 years!) and remember when you couldn't give away a Dunhill gas lighter, petrol lighters being greatly preferred. Really enjoyed the video, thanks, Les-in_CR

Great video! I have repaired a few lighters now because I work in a cigar bar in ATL. I have one at the moment that is leaking gas out of the thumb wheel when the damper is shut. I've replaced all the seals and have taken the needle valve apart. The needle valve wouldn't spring. I replaced everything, and it is leaking.

Thank you very much for the video. Fixed my Dunhill and it works fine. It will definitely need new O rings. For the time being I just stretched them out so they stick out and seal properly. I pulled out the little felt packing in the valve which looked worn and flipped it over. Also the flame tube was clogged and sticky. I tried a very fine wire but it wouldn't go in. Instead I put in a few small drops of WD-40 in it and that did the job.

Imo dunhill are by far the *least* collectible vintage lighters simply because everyone and their mom knows what they are, they were very common, and you can always find them for sale. The real collectible shit is all of the crazy cool wild lighters that existed/were manufactured from the 1910’s through to the 50s. The really cool rare shit you will never just find off a quick google search. The kind of stuff you really have to search for and may possibly be forgotten by history if it was not for the nerdy collectors seeking them out.

I highly recommend you look into aluminum block lighters and the history behind them. I have recently found myself with an absolute obsession over them. They only existed in any capacity for a few short years from around 1945 to 1950, with only a couple manufacturers out of the hundreds that made aluminum block lighters continuing to make them until 1952. They only existed as a facet of the materials available after WWII… the “useful” metals such as steel (iron), brass, copper etc were all in incredible scarcity due to shortages caused by the war. But aluminum had been way over produced in preparation for a potentially long and drawn out war with japan’s Air Force. When the nukes were dropped the production of military planes stopped abruptly and there was a massive surplus of aluminum. Manufacturers didn’t know what to do with it but recognized that tobacco smoking had become extremely popular due to the stress of war. so it became the “thing” to do if you were a machine shop and had surplus aluminum laying around. You’d cut a piece off the end of a block and then machine it into a lighter. It’s so fucking cool to me that these only existed for such a short period of time and for such a specific historical reason. They were so far ahead of their time and actually fit in with modern design much better than they did with other lighters in the time period. It’s a shame that once aluminum was no longer in surplus the production of these things basically halted.

Dude your AWESOME! I don’t care how old this video is. Many, many thanks to you sir for posting this video and sharing your information on getting a vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter working again! Years ago I purchased a nonworking vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter off Ebay, then sent it off to get it restored and working, etc. and yes it worked well afterwards…..well just recently I was going to use it and well it didn’t work!? It would just spark but not produce a steady flame? Believe it or not I had already purchased that Service Kit years ago and had it stored. After searching UA-cam videos, etc. I found yours and well after following your instructions, etc. I got my vintage Dunhill Rollagas lighter back, working in excellent condition! Again thank you Sir!

I have seen some parts that don't look like Dunhill quality. On ebay there is a flint housing and base that has casting blobs and a rough finish. It's not polished like a Dunhill. It could be corroded but I think it's the way it's made. If it doesn't look like jewelry it's not Dunhill.
