Salmonberry Railroad 2021
Exploring the currently out-of-service railroad in Salmonberry, Oregon. This track is leased to the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad by the Port of Tillamook Bay, who operated freight trains hauling lumber, logs and livestock feed between Tillamook and Banks until a winter storm in 2007 washed out a significant portion of track east of here in the Salmonberry Canyon. Since then OCSR has been the sole operator of these tracks and in 2015 restored the tracks to Salmonberry and ran a few excursions here, but now a bridge between Batterson and Salmonberry needs repair work and as a result these tracks have once again fallen into disrepair awaiting the day trains return here again. I wanted to see how this area looked in 2021 so I made the long trek to see for myself. It’s a beautiful location and it’ll provide a great destination for train rides and someday trail users on the future Salmonberry Trail, which plans to utilize the former POTB Railroad right-of-way between Banks and Tillamook for a recreational bike and hiking trail including paralleling the active tracks between Salmonberry and Tillamook. This is a short video that diverges from what I’ve posted in the past, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless!
Disclaimer: this is technically trespassing since railroad tracks are considered private property, and it is good practice to avoid using railroad tracks as a path regardless of what condition they’re in or how active or inactive they may appear. Always be alert when on or near railroad property.

Triple Oregon Train Ride
Переглядів 7438 років тому
In the summer of 2014 Pacific Rails Productions visited three different train rides within the state of Oregon. First stop was the Sumpter Valley Railroad, located about 24 miles west of Baker City, that takes passengers through late-1800s gold dredging operations on its way to the old mining town of Sumpter. Next stop was the Oregon Pacific Railroad in Portland and its short excursion along th...

Just for fun? I’ve never seen OCSR do that. Usually if they double head anything it’s with a steam and diesel for a longer trip. Such a cool catch! Maybe they just wanted some weight to really load up that engine and put her to work.

As I recall, this was to celebrate OCSR’s 10th anniversary. #25 was a relatively new acquisition at this point, and OCSR now had two steam locomotives, so I think it was also to celebrate that. Not sure how often OCSR has run double-headers since, if it all. Maybe they’ll run one in 2023 for their 20th anniversary.

So sad. Interesting that when they built the road bridge there, the tracks were rebuilt as well. To go around the washout. Oregon Lottery money got the rails running to Coos Bay again. Tillamook has a small port, and an airport. Not restoring the line is a mistake.

As sad as it is to see the freight railroad gone, I am excited for this next chapter of the Tillamook Branch. It’ll be fun to be able to explore areas once only accessible by train and to be able to bike along the coast away from Highway 101, especially with the OCSR’s steam trains continuing to run all the way up the coast to at least Salmonberry.

@@PacificRailsProds I talked to OCSR's Tim "JJ" Thompson a few years ago, and he told me that OCSR fully intends to restore to service the rest of the POTB track back to Banks. OCSR's Martin E. Hansen also informed me a couple of years ago that the OCSR will be running trains into Tillamook, and that once the POTB track is reconnected to Banks, passenger and eventually freight service will fully resume if there is any business to support freight traffic, but that there will at least be full-length passenger service from Tillamook to Banks. The Rail Riders have been evicted from their operations on the portion of the OCSR/POTB line from Tillamook to Wheeler, giving OCSR the clearance to run trains into Tillamook. It also appears that the Salmonberry Trail project has been stopped dead in it's tracks, and that the funding for the construction of the trail has been diverted to rebuilding the entire length of the railroad from Tillamook to Banks!

@@stuartadamsrailfanningvideos interesting. I’ve never heard anything about any plans to rebuild the entire railroad. My understanding has been OCSR’s lease only goes from Tillamook to Enright, and the track beyond that is so damaged that it’s not worth repairing. Plus there’s the risk to the steelhead trout population in the Salmonberry River that put a wrench in any plan to try rebuilding the track in the Salmonberry Canyon, which probably affects trail construction too but maybe not to the same extent. Yeah OCSR plans on running trains to Tillamook and Salmonberry and possibly as far as Enright, but not beyond that. As for the Salmonberry Trail, it’s also my understanding that that project is alive and well, and planning continues as does I believe funding for studies and eventually construction. While it would be great to see the entire rail line reopened for freight and passenger trains, like I said in the comment above I am excited to see this next chapter for the Tillamook branch and to be able to one day ride a bike over the Coast Range from Portland to the coast, while also continuing to ride OCSR’s historic steam trains along the coast and up the Nehalem River.

Million dollar comment section right here. What I would give to see that line opened back up so I could ride it once in my lifetime. There’s video of people backpack hiking it and it looks like the most scenic trip I’ve ever screen track pass through.

I was fireman on this run, the moonlight runs didn't prove to be profitable. backing loco all that way at night was a pain. Dave Profit was engineer, I miss working with him. backing in the dark reminded me the temple of doom tunnel scene.

Looks like OCSR is running them again this year between Garibaldi and Wheeler. I’m glad they’re back, even if it’s on a modified route. It’s a great way to enjoy the sunset along the coast!
