Welcome to Timothy's Travels.
Please join myself and my Wing Commander, T.Charlton along with my two trusty (and very nosey) drones, Timothy (mini 4 pro) and King Arthur (Air 3s) as we discover more about the world we live in.
Documenting the East Yorkshire coast, Europes' fastest eroding coastline, has become quite a focus for us with us living on it's doorstep.
This channel is a musical diary of our investigative dronalism.
Enjoy.
Davey.

A detailed look at the aftermath of Storm Darragh #erosion #4k #ww2 #stormdarragh #eastyorkshire
This was our first time visiting Fraisthorpe, I have heard many stories about this stretch over the years and have finally come for a thorough look.
As usual, I present the film in order of events to try and share our experience of the incredible morning.
I really recommend visiting this beach....it feels very special.

The Final Chapter for this iconic East Yorkshire structure #erosion #drone #4k

We've been keeping an eye on this pillbox since we first came here in March, recently I was informed that it had collapsed mid November so came back to have a nosey. Storm Darragh is still slowly buggering off so it was still uncomfortably windy, around 30mph gusts. Soon there will be no trace left of the pillbox.

Yesterday taught me my boundaries for flying in the wind...no more than 40mph gusts or crazy things can happen. The next day in Aldbrough, the wind had died down to a mere 34mph which is why I decided to film this comparison.

I bought Arthur (DJI Air3 s) so that I could fly in more challenging conditions. I've tested him with 30mph winds and he was fine. 53mph is a different story...this is it.

We pass these turbines a lot and each time I wonder why these look so disgusting...are they rusty? Is it oil? I don't know but am posing the question as I, personally, haven't seen any in this state before.

The weather app said a beautiful morning was coming so we headed to Ulrome to walk along the shore to Skipsea, where I would send my faithful companions up for a nosey. There is only one way down that I'm certain of so that's the way we went, just after high-tide allowing ourselves a relaxed walk as the Sun rises... There is great devastation there.
After the storm ...Update 29th November 2024

Following the survey cars down the beach proved to be very interesting. All my footage from the east Yorkshire coast has shown me where the worst hit areas are. The stretch around 20 miles southwards from Mappleton is really getting a pounding. Since releasing the video I believe they were possibly checking for unexploded bombs which get uncovered when the cliffs collapse.

The reason I bought Arthur was to be able to fly when you shouldn't. Storm Bert has just gone and left his tail-wind...not too crazy but a good tester nonetheless.

Such a place of interest on many levels, Spurn point and the peninsula are forever changing as the tide deposits and takes away the building materials which form it in the first place.

This is our journey to a filming location which we decided to do on bikes. Having made the journey several times in the past, the thought of getting there in an easier fashion was very appealing. The footage I was after, and did get, was for my Google Earth vs Reality series which cannot be complete without the incredible Spurn Point. Who knows how long it will be accessible for? Great videos and insight into the changing landscape around there , i dont suppose you have any aerial views of Model farm in Out Newton as my sister now lives there , thanks in advance
Great video as usual of sea erosion and nice to see another part of the east coast that it’s effecting. Keep up the great work 👏👏👏👍
Top-notch session. Much to digest (ongoing, actually). Oh, and the sound track is appropriate. I find the careful close-ups of deposits - course sand, gravel, fine layers, clays, peat - particularly useful. So too the platform ridges and cliff cavities [3:16+, esp. 3:46], and cliff failure. Wonderful stuff. Reference material, this. Wartime defences: CA34, blocked-up beach searchlight emplacement [10:44, 19:30]. CA 55, 'Earwig Villa' eared pillbox, entrances blocked up not so long ago (presumably Health and Safety), once at the cliff top having slid down [12:16, 19:12, 20:12]. Chris Kolonko is your guy for that one. BA10, WWI square pillbox in enclosure [25:22, 25:51]. CA, by the way, is the abbreviation for Carnaby in RCZAS notation, and BA for Barmston. The string of concrete blocks, mostly eroded ATTs or anti-tank traps, [esp. 13:09, esp. 16:13], mark the position of the cliff in the early 1940s. A configuration of different sized pieces [24:39, 25:55, 26:19] originally protected Auburn Beck close to the mouth. Cross-beach blocks [15:43, 20:58] were to thwart potential enemy advance along the beach and make for better targeting. A short section of dunes, immediately south of Bridlington, is the only part of the coast where erosion hardly ever happens [16:52]. I have (unavoidably, I hasten to add!) seen nudists at Fraisthorpe, always male. A note on those deposits mentioned in paragraph 2. About 16,000 years ago, the ice sheet that had not long previously covered East Yorkshire as far as the chalk cliff (Sewerby-Driffield-Cottingham-Hessle) was on the retreat. It was still massive, out at the east where today is sea. Water from melt, and from the Humber, was contained by a high wall of ice and had nowhere to go. Hence Lake Humber, which for a time extended so as to cover the area which includes what we know as Fraisthorpe. Its level was higher than the present land is. Water fed in from around, producing a delta at Barmston, and the various fresh-water deposits captured so adroitly by Timothy.
I was desperately looking forward to your analysis, and it certainly hasn't disappointed 😅 Delighted that the music felt right, too! I really am learning, so thank you Brian 😊
nice one guys thank you for your great videos and service
Always welcome 😊
Was a Nudist beach
You seem rather knowledgeable? 😅🤣
Just think of all the money wasted housing Illegals that would have been better spent protecting our coast from erosion. Norfolk has the same problem.
It is a big problem 🫣
Well that is certainly a scene of devastation, it won’t be long before the wind farm has to be moved back a bit. I have to ask … what on Earth was going on with that poor lobster , it looks shop bought with its pincers taped up, but what is it doing on the fallen pillbox 😳🦞. Thank you for sharing Davey and keeping us updated on the progression of the effects of erosion in that area 😊👍
You're most welcome... I don't know about the lobster....it seemed a great waste of a life.. 🤔🫣
Don’t forget churches .
Who could forget churches? 🫡
Never seen that car park so empty
I was quite surprised too...🤔
Is that an old ROC post behind the pillbox ?
I have been told by good authority, that it is. 🫡

@@stuartlast8156 Definitely in time it'll be exposed. 😏

Curious to know how far away from the edge when constructed and in what year.any ideas?
As far as I am aware....it was built in 1940/41 and at the current rate of erosion, around 1000 m inland. 🫣
If I may, here is a suggestion regarding the comment threads created by randonguy9893 and julesleon482. Pillbox HM10 was located at TA 36961 24316 when on land, which is 136 metres south of monitoring profile Pr100 and 364 metres north of Pr101 (very nearly all monitoring lines are 500 metres apart). Let's say the pillbox was erected in 1941/2 (many were). According to my faithful erosion calculator, the period 1942 to the most recent full year survey 2023 returns a cliff loss of 146.08 metres, or an average of 1.78 metres per year over the 82 year span. Pr101 gives 125.75 metres loss, an average of 1.53 metres per year. From the results, a middle figure is 135.92 metres. This, then, is a calculated answer to the question of how far the unit was from the cliff edge when constructed. So how does the above reconcile with the heavy rate of erosion seen today? What's happening around here? Well, the Withernsea defences have been extended a number of times. On each occasion, the sediment flow is disturbed. By sediment is meant sand, shingle, stones, and so on. Anyway, the section of coast a distance south of the defences can for a while benefit from plentiful sediment which provides some protection to the cliff, and loss is low or not at all. The actual dynamics are a little complicated, so skip. All good things come to an end. The coastline falls out of equilibrium. Its alignment becomes unsustainable. A natural correction takes place. Timothy is capturing the 'catch-up'.
What a mess why don’t it get cleaned up
There are many places along the East Yorkshire coast where the remains are just left...I personally like the reminder of what once was.. It feels a bit like a graveyard. 😏
That is great that you have been able to film this little piece of history and share it us before it was claimed by the sea. I looked at Google maps and it is shown on there with grass all around it.
In my videos I made a Google earth vs Reality vid about Holmpton and show the comparison you speak of. 😊
Just spent the first two minutes trying wipe a speck of muck off the screen before I realised it was the shadow of the drone.
🤣🤣🤣 love it!!
Your time and effort is (once more) much appreciated. This pillbox was designated HM10 - see East Yorkshire coastal pillboxes (references follow the RCZAS scheme). It was placed over a ditch supported by a concrete raft. Railings on the roof were removed about 1961. Behind its erstwhile site, still extant, is HM11, an ROC post. Further north [timestamp 3:26] are the remnants of HM5, a rare markers' shelter, and beyond, pillbox HM3, recently on the beach after some time perched at an angle at the mouth of The Runnell. Another pillbox, HM21, is assumed to be located within that thicket by the side of the road [6:28, TA 37190 23990], though the growth is always too dense for confirmation. If so, it may be in pristine condition. RIP (rest in pieces) HM10. Fond memories. As regards erosion, the section of coast south of Hollym to Easington is currently in a 'catch up' (or equilibrium) phase. Just look at the denuded state of the beach. An incident of cliff loss opposite Holmpton village, captured between monitoring profiles using the cliff line comparison method for August 2023 and May 2024, was 13.47 metres.
Fantastic knowledge....I'm glad to have filmed HM10 before its demise. Thank you Brian! 😊🫡
Just like our country and British way of life eroded away every year
It's been a weird winter. I never heard of this pillbox or of sycamore gap and now I'm grieving two losses to the northern England landscape
It is a sad sight. There are a couple of other pillboxes which we have been watching too...they are both on the edge also. 😒 Sycamore gap was a real tragedy! 😑
Great footage. Have you checked out the observation tower lying on the beach south of Cowden? Its associated with the old weapons range. If you go, make sure you don't step in the dead sperm whale (which was there in spring 2023).
I think I filmed the old tower....must have missed the sperm whale...thank goodness 😳
30 years ago I went to play golf at Flamborough Golf Club, I was told to watch out for the bunker in front of the 17th green. Expecting to find an expanse of sand, I was surprise to find an actual WW2 concrete bunker between me and the green. Not Sure if it's still there, not been for many years.
I'll have a look when we're up that way 😊
Perhaps homes for immigrants should be built close to the sea here?
Cheeky 😜
Tell your doctor your idea before he helps you the next time.
@ I did, plagiarism of his idea actually.
@@brianwillson9567 I would check that prescription extremely carefully 😉
Bit of history gone .
I know....sad to see 😏
That end was heart stopping. Definitely makes care refresh worthwhile for when things go bad fast. I wonder if it was shaking so much the ground sensors couldn't work. It seemed to lose all sense of height and orientation. Nice save though! I had a similar experience where I was fighting wind over the south coast and managed to get it over land..just!
I learnt many things that day 😅
Thère doesn't seem to be any steel reenforcement bars in the wreckage, does there ? Maybe the ones that go over in one piece do have them. Thanks a lot. Colin ( Wakefield )
Very welcome...and no, otherwise it would possibly have stayed whole instead of breaking up. 🤔
What’s the structure to the rear, looks a bit like the entrance to a ROC bunkr
Think you could be right 🫡
For the money wasted on a couple of thousand scrounging illegals they could have done a couple miles of huge rocks to help slow the erosion by the waves …
Respect to the servicemen who occupied the pillbox
Indeed 🫡
Dream posting I should of thought , at least in the summer months!
There are a couple of pillboxes just outside the Lever Brothers factory area in New Ferry/ Birkenhead, i used to see them every day on my journey to High School from Whitby, Ellesmere Port where we lived in the 60's and 70's.
They're dotted all over the east yorkshire coast...I've always had a fascination with them.
I should have said these are on a public road not the coastline, on the Wirral.
Still there mate, my friend works for Levers and sees them every day !!
Gerry bunkers are much sturdier.
Second person who said that 😉
Good video and music.
Thank you, much appreciated 😊
tides caused by the earth breathing
That's a nice way of putting it 😍
So sad to see this, Rest in Pieces my sweet treasure, gone but not forgotten.
I'm glad to have the footage. Very sad 😔
Do you sell cds of your music? I so enjoy it
I decided, quite early on, that I wouldn't put my chillout tracks out for sale on-line...I'd purely use them for my vids. I'm more than happy to send you a put together cd . 😊 Davey
Looks like most of the washout is coming from the surface rather than the sea they need to put lots of drainage in them fields going down to sea level or there will be no farm left before long.
Could well be right, mate 🤔
Do you have a cd of the music i love it
No official cds...I can put one together for you? I made the decision to not upload them online and just play them in my vids. Davey
Would you mind telling me which drone you use?
Most of my footage has been with mini 4 pro. I have just bought the Air3s and use that in combination with the mini. 😊
The beach was lovely at Aldborough. Thank you for showing this 🩷
You're very welcome. Amazing to see the same place with such a different atmosphere. 😊
I wonder how far inland it was when it was first installed?
Well, if it was built in 1940, eroding at 12m per year it would be just over 1000m inland! 🤪
It looks real nice when the sea is blue and the high tide is not touching the mud.
Doesn't look like The North Sea 😅
Hiya great footage especially the drone, could I ask which drone you use?
My main drone has been Timothy (mini 4 pro), I also use Arthur ( Air3 s) for more challenging things. 😊
When I did RC model aircraft years ago first thing I was taught was don’t fly down wind always fly into the wind as it will help you get back if something goes wrong or happens. With a plane you can glide back if your engine fails. Same with a drone wind will take you along using hardly any battery. Always have a backup plan. Drones are great fun
Yup, it was my first mistake...and I was aware of it before I took off...I think the anxiety of being in the air at all overtook common sense. 😅
thats crazy but sea levels are rising so its going to happen more and more
How do you know sea levels are rising?
The more I'm discovering is leading me to believe that the East Yorkshire coast may be suffering more due to man-made changes. For example, look up The Zuiderzee..The knock on effects have changed the natural cycle of the spreading of beach sediment which directly lowers the natural protection.
Good question 🤔
@@timothystravels8492 isostatic rebound means the Eastern-SE UK coastline is sinking, which gives the illusion of rising sea level. Also the boulder clay this coastline is made of has no resistance to the seas erosive capabilities. Easington gas terminal just down the coast had better watch out for the erosion..🤔
@@DrRock2009 You just witnessed the evidence, coastal erosion happens when the tides and winds are higher than normal its not rocket science, structure stood there for best part of 85 years now its no more, why do you think that is? Do you think the fairies dug under it to undermine its foundations.
I can't see any evidence of rebar in the debris, so I'm assuming that this structure was built without it, which would be unusual for the time. I've see similar structures fall into the sea before and if they are reinforced they tend to stay as a complete structures. Sad.
I did wonder why it shattered! 🫣
Cheep job, wonder if there is any warranty on it😊.
If that's 12m of erosion in less than a year......how long has that turbine farm in the distance got?!
I know, right? 🫣
Maybe it'll float away and become off shore lol
