HVAC Tool Porn!
United States
Приєднався 22 тра 2019
I like to take video of HVAC work, And tools. Have found a passion in working with tools and finding new tools that make my job easy and efficient for customers. I started posting some videos of tools and well the folks that do HVAC started taking over my UA-cam channel. So the start of HVAC Tool Porn! Was to keep my private life still some what private and my HVAC life public. I am a HVAC slut. I do commercial work by choice build outs are my preference. Service van is what the company has gave me so that makes me a service guy when its hot and when its cold. I am on call for 1 week strait and the other 2 service guys each take a week. 3 week rotation. So if it is slow on the service end I go back to commercial work. If installs need help or call offs I can turn into a installer. Work in Florida so the ac season is long and the heat season is only few weeks long. I am no where a know it all but have good work ethic and honest type of worker.
Store was over 90° call back, and the previous tech could not find the issue.
Found issue with evap, made it clean and then located the real reason the store was hot.

Got it up and going, but not how I would typically have done it... would have preferred to put a new breaker and wire to the evap. Job is being quoted for replacement, so I will more than likely end up doing it then.

One strap😮,? ... Hey guys welcome back to dangy bros today we'll be lifting with a singular strap😅 there good 😂
We are good. Made it to the roof. No harm to people or equipment... one thing I've learned with hvacr is not every job will be picture perfect. The lifting strap was under its lifting capacity. And with the tie off, I had 3 points of contact on the equipment at all times of the lift...
I’m glad that R22 is gone, R22 is 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
Can you just move the 24 V wires from one contactor to the other
No, the board will fault out. First thing I tried.

How much is 427a per lb? What's the cost of replacing R-22 with 427a for household AC?
We charge $60 per lb of 427a and do not stock or use r22...
You don’t charge off sub cooling or superheat?Just get the pressure half ass close and call it good
@@DallasPhillips-hz9yn all of the above. Subcooling 10-14 super heat 20-40 pressures 65-70/225-250
You made a spelling mistake. “ass” is not correct. “as” is.
@@suezq74 no I didn’t half ass is what I said
Nice to see an honest tech and not a predatory salesman pushing new equipment at crazy prices these days. I only found out about R-22 replacements after some research and it seems the industry norm is either recharging with R-22 at crazy prices or new equipment. These drop-in R-22 replacements seem way less common than they should be when R-22 equipment is in good condition but lost charge from a repairable leak. I don't think I can buy these without an HVAC license but from what I understand 427A, 407x, and other R-22 drop-ins are like less than $50/pound versus the dwindling supply of R-22 being several hundred per pound these days.
I don't carry r22 on my truck anymore. The only option with me is to convert it over. OR new equipment depending on what is wrong with it...
Update...MOST techs are honest, poorly trained perhaps but they believe what they are saying... it's the owners who send them out that are ripping you off..
Great Job, I used to do A/C on Automobiles way back when, did u need to retrofit any of the parts? To accept the new 427A freon? Or is the freon the new R22? Sorry been out of the loop for yrs now.🤭
427A is designed to be a 'drop-in; R-22 replacement that has very similar pressures and requires no changes for existing R-22 systems. Basically a new production alternative to the shrinking R-22 supply and crazy prices yet I barely knew about R-22 replacements as someone not working in HVAC and was just concerned about new AC unit prices if our R-22 system developed a leak. R-22 was used in AC units until 2010 when it was replaced by 410-A in all new units, but 410-A runs at higher pressures than R-22 so they're not compatible and you need to find a certain R-22 replacement like seen here that can be used in pre-2010 AC units. This is basically the alternative to having to buy crazy overpriced new equipment if you have a repairable leak.
Did you make a long video if this job. I would like to see if you ended up replacing that failing condenser motor. Also I would have liked to see if you replaced the filter drier when you removed all the r-22 and replaced with 427-a. Which you probably did none of that. 427-a is my go to r-22 replacement but Im not a hack and mix 427-a and R-22. I recommend deleting this video if there is not a long form.
No long video. Dryer was inside next to airhandler and was replaced. Everybody hacks stuff a time or two, so when you say you not a hack, understand that some jobs can not be completed to perfection depending on the customer. Im not a fan of blending gas. This particular gas station has its own repair men, not sure if they don't handle r22 or why I was there, but my job was to get that unit going and did just that.
427a is a direct drop in replacement you can add it strait to R22.If you have a TXV might have a very slight temp glide will be fine. How about you post videos of your jobs since you’re so by the book show the rest of us how great you are
@@DallasPhillips-hz9yn Where does it say you can blend refrigerants?

Or...by hand.
It would of been quicker 😂
Itd be nice if they made a vest that you can strap a compressor to so all you need to do is use your legs and 1 arm
Even with the set point too low with 2 probe dixell with defrost set up its shouldn’t ice up like that . I always go into the advanced settings and check what temps the probes are reading and make sure that’s correct. Also ohm out the sensors etc but ya definitely too low of a set point
Great advice...
Don’t use that stuff, they’ve come a long way with way better stuff. And you have no mask on, your life has been shortened tremendously
Gracias por tu aportes 👍
I have the same issue on a 7.5ton proving switch 1st stage issue, and tech supports no help. I replaced the contactor and aux without resolution. Did you find a solution?
We replaced contactor and micro switch and 2 days later ordered a Dainkin unit. We are experimenting with gutting controller on a few units but have not made a final decision to what methods we will use in the future....
Bottom contractor is actually circuit #1. Schematic is labeled wrong. Small compressor is 1st stage. Don’t ask me how I know. Had this exact issue and scratched my head for awhile. Check incoming voltage. Trane taps all their transformers for 240v. Had to tap the transformers for 208v. Haven’t had a single trip since. My control voltage went from 23.2v to 27v. Tranes are super sensitive to anything below 24v
Yeah we replaced the switch and have not been back..
Anybody having issues with these units not dehumidifying in 1st stage cooling? 33% cooling capacity and 66% fan speed. 50+ degree saturated suction temperature not below RAT dew point. I’ve lowered the “max fan speed” as a temporary fix but then when unit runs 100% cooling capacity it like 230cfm/ton.
That start capacitor is only for the compressor bypass of a open or struggling start winding in the compressor. That blue wire shouldnt be there to the relay and is causing the burn up. This may be a return call? Over my years of service, I've never powered a start assist capacitor to a relay? They always go to the run capacitor common and herm slots. Two wire hook up only for assisting the compressor. Start up booster. So idk what that previous outfit did? The over amping on the components could be caused from the wrong power source coming in? Drawing to many amps struggling to run things. Causing over heating on relays and burning leads off components. Those relays have a normally open normally closed until powered to open bi metal strips. I cant see drawing from a start capacitor to control relay switching? Idk man, seems wrong? Also, just in observance, I believe that start cap may be over sized for that small of a system? They rate from 1-3 ton, or 3-5 ton. Definately a 3-5 ton rated start capacitor just by the size of the cylinder. Throwing way to many amps at the compressor of that size on start up. I went to RSI the refrigeration school in phx. Pretty famous industry wide school. Wish I could see the schematic or legend to help trace out what is ran to that relay for switching power instead of a start cap? That blue wire was in the wrong spot. Something else goes there to power that relay. Maybe off a contactor common?
So when I fixed it I ran like you said. To the 2 poles of a 2 pole run cap and did away with the blue wire! Common wire strait to com on compressor red hot leg to cap and to run, and then from start cap to 2nd pole on 2 pole cap and to start.. fixed it rite up.
@@hvactoolporn188 yes you saw it my friend! They wired it funny. Right on, yeah looking at it I was like wait a minute?
😂oh this is a refrigeration unit. Not a ac unit. Still seems wired wrong? Differential timer like a ranco e15 on this thing?
Yes temp controller. 28 off 38 on. Not sure what the model is in this case I have only worked on a handful of them. I went over the wiring and even stepped back and went over a second time. Could not find it.. improvised with the hard start when I realized the run cap was only rated for 220v and was 240. The customer has their own repair guys so no clue what they did to it prior...
I'm a old tech from Arizona originally. More residential stuff. Have worked on some wine units in the past with these kind of components. Cut in cut out differential timers, did you find a open or damaged start winding in the compressor, or was there already the start cap in place when you arrived? That is always sign of previous compressor damage. Did you also find a damaged fan motor, like really high fla, full load amps on start up? Or a overload popped out in the fan motor from over heating? That relay burned up for a reason. Stuck bi metal leads internally perhaps from arching over time?
So when I arrived breaker was tripped, the relay was shorting out, the fans were .2 a over fla and ohm on the compressor was within range. The new relay I received was stuck and would not cut power to the start cap.. so I was the one that flipped switch and popped the cap.. instead of going back to parts house 35 miles away I used the relay off hard start and cap as start components. The system ran fine and the amp draw was on the high side of the range but ok. Got down to temp. Management stated their repair guys have worked on it several times this year. Seen new filter and clean coils.. was wired correctly so not sure if the start cap was feeding back but didn't need to dig in further as I wired around that with the hard start.
So why isnt the start cap wired to the common on the multi cap and herm avoiding the relay all together? Start caps are installed to bypass a bad start winding in the compressor. Weird that its power source is off a staging relay for the start capacitor going to a compressor. The multi cap should be wired off the common on the contactor for power to the compressor and fan. Is this a fan staging relay? What kind of system is this?
No contactor on this type of system is a southern case art reach in deli case.
😂blown start capacitor and switching relay. Overheated for sure with all that burned up wiring. Possible compressor start winding is open and the whole system is down. Cant tell if the multi capacitor is blown as well or burned up on the compressor side, possibly?
So the relay was not opening power to the start cap. Is what made it overheat. Replaced it and that is when it blew all the black oil out... I wired a hard start with a relay and is good to go as it took that og relay out of the equation. It was a 240 system and the start cap was rated for 220v the hard start was rated for over 300 volts and gave me a relay to cut power to the start cap...
How to you reset and clear the fault from memory?
How you clear the light?
Think that was turn on off and to clean 3 times to reset
I’m not a fan of brown unless the coil is covered in grease so or caked up bad. I’ve noticed over the years it seems to deteriorate the coil prematurely.
First time using it this year. Coil Was washed 3 weeks prior. 1 block from landfill so I figured if pressure didn't drop was going to pull the charge and use virgin gas.. pressure dropped to comfortable pressure. I was pleased
thank you for the tip, but why is this the case?

5 tons isn't referring to the physical weight of it, it's the cooling capacity

Buddy I’ve have the same problems gut it rewire as long as your warranty is not in place they do some really dumb things
How are you running the blower?
VERY misleading title!!
Nope, it really isn't.
Not really any one that knows a thing or two about HVAC will get it. Typically you use a crane we pushed it off... Google how much does a 5 ton package unit weigh and most are 500 ish pounds...
People who don't understand how A/C units are measured in the archaic method. 5 tons is not the weight of the unit but is instead the amount of energy needed to melt a ton of ice, which is 12,000 BTU's, to cool the area. Therefore a 5 ton unit can remove 60,000 BTU's of heat per hour. Essentially the higher the tonnage the more cooling the unit will give.
Thank you! I was trying to think of a way to tell them the icp units or Grand air 5 ton package units only way around 500 lbs...
300 pounds not 10000
A ton my arse
Doubtful that thing is 5 tons...1 ton max. 🤦
