Connect your microbit to the internet and send data easily using Seluxit Wappsto bit
The microbit is a powerful little device with lots of built in hardware. The sensors can measure a bunch of different things, but what if you want to record those readings? In this tutorial I’ll show you how you can use an extension board called a wappsto bit to log data from your microbit to the internet! You can see your data through a web browser, or through an app, from anywhere in the world. That means you can keep track of things like light level or temperature in a room wherever you are. Pretty cool, right?
Full disclosure: Seluxit sent me the Wappsto bit for free to play with. They didn’t ask me to make a video, or pay me to say nice things about their product, but I thought you folks might be interested in how it works. So all opinions in this video are totally my own - the wappsto bit was genuinely pretty straight-forward to use and I can see lots of fun project potential.

Saying goodbye 2020 with microbit-powered rotating barbecue cheese

I wanted to say #byebye2020 in the cheesiest way possible. So I spit-roast and ate a 2020 effigy made of paneer cheese! My DIY remote-control barbecue cheese rotator is powered by microbit, and has a few other electronic parts to boot. When I press a button on my phone, a continuous rotation micro servo motor sets the cheese spinning over the barbecue, then the microbit screen gives me a 5 minu...

    If you are using 1 pin to control the strip, use a smaller microcontroller like Arduino Micro, mini or nano. They are so small that you can sew them into the fabric and dont have to worry about them. They all run on two AA or AAA batteries.

    You could probably connect your micro:bit to the laptop over Bluetooth to scratch and have scratch take whatever data you want and put it in a cloud variable to be accessed by anyone. It’s just an idea. I’m not sure if it would work. It would probably be good for temperature monitoring.

    Really like the content, however it’s technically not a theremin, as it uses light level, and not proximity. I built mine with an arduino mega (I know that’s a bit overkill) and an ultrasonic sensor, so it responds to how close something is, rather than how bright something is. However, great video, liked the project.

    Does it support logging data to a local server (e.g. Raspberry Pi) instead, for those who don't trust the cloud to be secure or those who want a guarantee that the device can still be used if the cloud service goes down?

    • @HannahMakes
      @HannahMakes 3 роки тому

      It looks like the Wappsto:bit is designed pretty specifically to log data to the Wappsto platform - but if you're looking to log data elsewhere, still over WiFi, then I'd suggest a board like the ESP8266. I know there are some clever people who've already written MakeCode extensions for the ESP8266 to make the process a bit easier too. Hope that helps!

    Great to see you are back! Question: Can you use the Wappsto & microbit as the hub, and have other microbits communicating with the hub wirelessly, increasing the number of locations?

    • @HannahMakes
      @HannahMakes 3 роки тому

      I can't see why not! In fact, that's a really great idea. As long as the other microbits are within radio range that seems like a great way to collect EVEN MORE DATA! Yay!
