Steven P. James shares his new "Sonata Dolorosa" for piano – 6/11/2024 | CC Monthly Presentations
Steven writes: "I have written a fairly substantial solo piano piece, titled Sonata Dolorosa, which I performed in my Master's Recital on May 15th in Beall Hall. I would like to share ... this work with Cascadia Composers, as well as talk a bit about my influences, the compositional elements of the piece, and give an overview of some of the pianistic techniques I used when writing it."
Note to viewers: There was a problem with the Zoom recording such that many systems of the score are skipped over during the complete performance segment of this presentation video. For a video of the sonata only, with the complete score (not to mention better sound quality), please go to ua-cam.com/video/7_yPxG8IQac/v-deo.html
Steven P. James is a graduate student in piano performance at the University of Oregon, where he currently studies with Dr. Alexandre Dossin and Dr. David Riley. He has participated and received awards in numerous piano competitions, including the MTNA Young Artist Competition and the American Liszt Competition in Los Angeles. In June 2022, he received an Achievement Award from the U of O for outstanding undergraduate keyboard performance. In addition, Steven is an active composer and piano teacher in the Eugene area, teaching private lessons as an associate of the Pavilanis School of Music and studying composition privately with Dr. David Crumb. When not pursuing music, Steven also enjoys exploring nature, creative writing, and studying psychology.
This presentation is part of a monthly series by members of Cascadia Composers. They are typically held (starting in the fall of 2023) the second Tuesday of every month. There is no doubt that the two volumes of Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Well-tempered Clavier” have long inspired me in my own performance and composing. I have performed both books in their entirety in recitals 22 years apart (to coincide with the 22 years separating their creation) and have always admired Bach’s devotion to the form of the fugue, to say nothing of his consummate craftsmanship so s...

Asya makes it look far easier than it actually is to play this ferocious nightmare of a piece-the mark of a world-class pianist! For anyone interested in acquiring the score (and many others by the same composer), it can be found in COLLECTED PIANO WORKS: Volume 1 by Gary Lloyd Noland, which is available at most major book retailers.

Wonderful presentation, Walter! I'm so glad it all worked out. I wish I could have been there. The quilts are fantastic! and your music compliments them so very well. Having done some quilting myself, I agree with Carie's comments. The complexity of the work involved is amazing and so creative and artistically done! I look forward to watching this presentation again and sharing it with others! Thanks again! Liz Nedela

On the positive side: composers with an open attitude about what can be done on your instrument, or what are other interpretations of their music besides what they originally envisioned. And composers who THANK YOU, and point out things you did that they like. Libby Larsen comes to mind. She thanked me for “playing the rhythm as written.’ And also wasn’t shy about praising the performance of a particular movement of the piece I was playing as the best I’ve heard. That does wonderful things for one’s self esteem. On the negative: working with people who have different rehearsal expectations, for example, I HATE rehearsing right up until the downbeat of a concert. I feel like I can’t decompress from the rehearsal enough to really focus on the performance. And yet I’ve run into others who want to rehearse even while the audience is entering the hall, thinking that every moment must be spent rehearsing, I think to possibly have some sort of musical momentum going into the performance. I find this is especially true of others who are significantly younger than me. They have the energy to do that, whereas I am older (60s) and I simply cannot sustain that kind of energy endlessly.

“Imaginary Choreography” by Andrew Sigler is such a buoyant suite, especially the coquettish first movement. With but a few departures, this is a tonal work, but how Sigler finds and exploits the hidden corners of both the major and the minor scales, especially in II. Moonstruck, which can hold its own any day next to Arnold Schönberg’s “Pierrot lunaire.” The piano trio performs the work splendidly!

Susan DeWitt Smith gives us an exquisite performance of “Eternal Gardens” by Michael Johanson. Drawing on the musical languages of Gabriel Fauré and Olivier Messiaen, with a little passion from Samuel Barber, Johanson gifts the world with a fitting tribute to Toru Takemitsu. What I find extraordinary about this piece, so demonstrated in this wonderful performance, is the diversity and even juxtaposition of simple triads with willowy clusters, crystalline sonorities with Romantic tonal expressions, and their synthesis into a new music that is on its own path apart from its forbears. The recollection of that gorgeous opening idea sotto voce a third lower shortly before the end reflects a creative life well-lived by both Takemitsu and Johanson. Bravo!

Andrew Lewinter’s “Nonet” is certainly worthy of our listening, if the Passacaglia is any indication. Scored in e minor, it bears a resemblance to the finale of Johannes Brahms’ 4th Symphony in its three opening variations. The lilting syncopations sneak in as a curiosity but later commandeer the whole movement as the multitude of fast virtuoso runs explodes into a glorious triumphant closing chord! It leaves me breathless!

Another splendid violin/piano duo is “Dust and Shadows” by John G. Bilotta. A clear view of the panorama ahead (the soliloquy in d minor by the violin) becomes obscure as other distant tonalities “dust” it and the piano enters with the “shadows,” low and dark sonorities unpledged to any tonality. I love the elasticity of this piece as all these tensions play against one another and the work ends in a disquieting way.

Congratulations to all composers and musicians presented within this video! The piece of my friend composer Gary Noland transported me in various places. Mozart once wrote to his father Leopold:"I could write music in every style!"...Well, Gary has the capacity to "melt" styles which seem incompatible one to the other and, by that, he manages to create something new and strangely beautiful because very diferent worlds seem to get joint in one. Congratulations Gary! Congratulations to the beautiful soprano and the excellent pianist as well! They managed to "paint" Gary's music with such beautiful colors of their musical souls..

I am expecting to have more of these settings of A. Theroux's poems performed in the near future. Don't know when yet. It all depends on the whims of our little virus friend. Hope you're doing well.

Bravo for this music, and especially for the piece at about 121:00 by my composer friend Gary Noland! His piano intro and a few short sections are a bit overly atonal for my ears, though I do understand why he composed it like this to set up the mood. Though as it moves through the very haunting vocal melody and cabaret feel, the rest of the piece is sublime with melody, harmony, and feeling....Peace! 🎼❤

Thank you for listening, Gerald. I think of dissonances as "blissonances." I have a palette for spicey (not much for spacey) music and, as you know, also a significant musical sweet tooth. Both land me in trouble. Can't help myself. Upwards and Onwards!
