New BSG Barotine
Picked up a Czech made BSG baritone recently. Thought I’d take a break on a windy summer afternoon to play.

Can someone tell me how this setup (with the shotgun) compares to using a good on camera (3,5mm) microphone with it's own power? For example compared to the likes of Rode Videomic NTG, Diety D3pro, Sennheiser mke400, Rode Videomic pro+...
Hi. Two reasons - mics and preamps. Shotgun mics from Rode etc are great for general use. Specialised shotgun mics from different makers, condensor mics used for recording, or capsule mics from Zoom are higher quality and capture sound differently. Preamps: plugging a 3.5mm videomic into your camera means the camera preamp is processing your audio. Many DSLRs have ok to average preamps that colour the sound/ introduce noise. Many cinema cameras have dedicated XLR inputs and high quality preamps that capture great audio (think Canon C300 etc).
Zoom and other external recorders are often used to capture audio and sync later for footage from cameras/several cameras. As mentioned in my review, the Q8 is a rubbish camera but a versatile external recorder, much like the H6 etc
@@JoelK thanks for the explanation.
I think the most obvious difference can be heard in the mandolin and guitar recordings. There's more clarity and the transients seem more snappy; the Focusrite has a slightly veiled and smeared sound in comparison. The acoustic guitar recording seems to exhibit more low end girth with the RNP. I couldn't hear too obvious differences with the spoken or sung samples, so it seems that the main differences really lie in the lower and upper parts of the frequency range.
I have both these units aswell and must say firstly, good video. I think your original conclusion is spot on.. I hear virtually no difference either. I was going to record my guitar tracks with the RNP but after doing a similar test that you’ve done here, I just plugged straight into the Scarlett instead. I think anyone that says they hear an improvement from the RNP over Scarlett has a very active imagination and are bound to their preconceived ideas and bias regarding other factors involved here (branding/populism/expectation) An interesting way to have done this video would be a blind test.. see if the folk that say they prefer the RNP would be able to pick which one is which..
Great video, I have a PR30 as well, to me, it sounds like the mix of a good ribbon mic and a 57. I'm getting tones of compliment from sound guys when I'm using it live on my guitar amp, smooth tone that sits perfectly in the mix.
Great video! I play clawhammer and was looking to increase volume if playing outside so I got the Shure SM57 mic and hooked it to a LD amp. Just was curious best position to place mic? Front of pot? To the side? Under the neck? Also if ok to use a wind screen on the mic?
Hey mate I’m sure there’s some difference where you point it but assuming the rim rings fairly evenly I don’t think it makes a difference (like the bout on guitars do).
And windscreens cut down a little bit of the high end frequencies. Can be useful for passive EQing
@@JoelK thanks for the info
Thanks for video !!!! I enjoyed it. A real beauty.
Great video!! Thanks for the info. Do you think the Pro-70 would sound decent in a resonator banjo for a small band situation? I tried a Gold tone ABS banjo mic today. I clips to the outside and bends over the head, but had a lot of feedback probs, even at low volume without a band. I'd bought a Gold Tone SMP + ( magnetic / wound coil pickup that attaches to the rod inside ) but it just does NOT sound like a banjo anymore. PS: Great to come across a fellow Aussie banjo Player. Not many of us around.
Hey mate There’s a few of us around :) For a resonator you could try a K&K under bridge style transducer. You get more of that piezo ‘thwack’ at the front of the note but they’re pretty great at feedback suppression (much better than an internal mic).
I use a clip on drum mic live on my 5 string and have installed a noiseless P90 pickup in my 6 string banjo. I put that through a DI and straight to the desk. Sounds great!
It sounds like Hitler :D
Beautiful playing!! Is that the standard Baritone tuning or is it a tuning analogous to DADGAD?
Hey mate They’re a couple of tunes I normally play on the banjo in ‘Sawmill’ tuning - on a 5 string banjo: gDGCD I think I would have tuned the guitar to something on a normal scale guitar like DGDGCD. Baritone would be that but down in A probably
I’m going to get one of these for some of the older jazz I do
How loud are these compared to a blues juinor
I’m not sure. I’d need to have them side by side. However, the 15” speaker should bring out way more bass frequencies than the one on the Blues Junior
The Blues jr is way louder. I turned the Exclesior to 10 i was never about to get the Blues jr all the way up
Sounds much better but i find 5 watt combos all sound boxy due to the small cab . 5 watt Combos open right up with extension cabs .
Excellent video blog ❤ greetings from the old country Ireland 🇮🇪
Thanks mate !
Spaghetti :)
Nice music. Sub and like
not sure what the rim cap material is, but it looks like a dark rosewood maybe?
I see that it is a Ramsey Student model banjo. Sounds great!
Thanks mate! 12 years on and I’m still happy I bought it!
You bet! I’m in the process of buying one today! In large part to your video. Its gorgeous and in almost like new condition. I’d send you some pics if I could.
@@dannydavenport1767 upload a vid to UA-cam when you’ve got it and put the link in a comment
I got it today and I believe its a 2015 or 2016 model according to Donald Zepp. It has the 3 piece neck, ebony fingerboard and overlays like yours and looks identical except for the color of the rim cap which is a darker color. Serial number 2984. Sounds awesome too. Also its in mint shape, not a mark on it, as is the brown bump case. So lucky to have found it.
@@dannydavenport1767 good work! What’s the rim material? I got mine from Zepp’s too
Is that a Ramsey student model banjo? thanks.
My RNP was sitting in a drawer for years, I got it out today since I got a new mic Warm Audio WA-8000. Running through an SSL usb audio interface with legacy 4K. I wasn’t even in my booth and could tell the signal was a lot thicker than the SSL built in preamp. Definitely need to isolate the sound recording in an acoustically treated environment. And turn up the gain will really be able to tell the difference then. The built in preamp on the usb audio interface was clean but sounded thin. Definitely some warmth going through it. I’d keep it. Next level preamps cost much much more.
just bumbling around...I've got crazy focusrite gear...like a couple of mixmasters and compounders etc.... and the fmr in your video...really tickles my ears better...thanks!
I really enjoyed this video, thanks for taking the time to talk through the different Mic options. Also enjoyed the relaxed and informal nature to it....easier to take in the info. :D I play banjo in a band most weekends often with minimal space so feedback (when we need to be loud) can be an issue interns of my proximity to the FOH. Therefore we use EIM as there is no need to add fuel to that fire so to speak. From your video I was drawn to the Audio Technica Pro 70 option as a mic offers so much more than a transducer/ pickup in my opinion....as you explained we don't hear the banjo like that so it would need some manipulation (roll off the low end). I've just bought a Gold Tone CC 50 RP which has a closed back ...Id like to use the Audio Technica Pro 70 option but have no idea how that will impact the sound. My instincts tell me there will be more low end as it can't really escape due to the closed back. With that info, whats your thoughts? lastly what do you think of transducers like the K&K Banjo Twin for example? Thank you in advance, really appreciate any insight. :)
Hey mate Interesting you bring this up. I just joined a fairly loud blues/country band, where they want me to occasionally play banjo. With an easy 100db level (including bass and drums), there’s no way a mic, whether out front, or my AT Pro70 rig, would cut it. K&K mini would be superior, even if you’re loosing the tone of the banjo. When I had a K&K dual mini on my first Deering, I would always run it through a Boss EQ7 pedal, both to boost level (passive transducer), and shape the tone to be closer to what it is acoustically. I suspect if you use something higher end, like an LR Baggs DI with EQ, you could get further. Maybe I’ll get one installed on my 6 string banjo and do a follow up vid? Otherwise, let me know how you go
Very nice guitar performance.🎸🎵
Thanks mate
Hey Big M. Where do they build men like you?

Thank you for a very detailed approach, I like your relaxed way of telling the things! What is the song called at the very beginning of your clip? Thx
Just something I made up
Nice. For recording i use often drums tom microphone (with fantom alim )Do you try kna piézzo ? I try one in m'y tenor and sound good. For my 5 strings i gor a Myers and thats good too. If someone got other experience about piezzo ?
Good to hear the myers works.
GR8 VIDEO, NO DISRESPECT FOR THE PERFORMANCE, BUT I THINK YOU SHOULD DO ANOTHER VIDEO , USING STRATS....THIS WOULD GIVE A BETTER IDEA FOR THOSE WHO THINK OF BUYING THIS LITTLE MONSTER....
Hmmm. Yeh, if I can be bothered swapping the tubes out again. Also, now I’ve put an Eminence 1518 speaker in there’s no room to get to the back!
I have both set up for use with voice and the comparison matches my results, the upper mid-range 1.5kHz through the upper range is a bit brighter, almost gritty with the PR-30 which works for me, but they turned out to be surprisingly more similar than not.
Nice man!
It sounds great. Thanks for the video.
What's the name of this instrument ?

The RNP was WAY better. The scarlet reminded me of a cell phone recording whereas the RNP sounded like music. I know that sounds dumb as hell but just what came to mind.
Good analysis!
So why doesnt blackstar put az v30, in to begin with cheap sobs
You nailed it. Also, weight
Now anyone can sound like Tom Waits
Nice
This is kind of like when people buy brand new jeans that are ripped! Get right up on top of that thing 😂
Is it the mullet of mics?
I enjoyed this song.. Well done
Came here because I was interested in the general comparison of these mics, and was happily surprised when I heard you say you were going to test them with banjo, and even more thrilled that it was actually CLAWHAMMER! I play clawhammer as well, and I just played a gig this past weekend where the sound engineer used a Heil PR31BW for my banjo. Of course I wasn’t out in the audience to know how it sounded exactly, but from how it sounded in the (professional quality) video taken of the performance, I think I’ll have to pick up one of these for use with my banjo (probably the more compact PR31) for home studio and possibly live use. Good review/comparison!

Thanks Jared! Glad to hear you’ve found something that works. Stay tuned - I’m getting a carbon microphone (like the old 1920’s mics), which I’ll also do some recording/comparisons with.
