Does anyone have a download link for ASTM D245 (Standard Practice for Establishing Structural Grades and Related Allowable Properties for Visually Graded Lumber) where you don't have to pay $75?

This is amazing. I learned trig well in school and so I have always used that to figure out angles. However, I am really interested in how to do something like this with curved pieces and joining curved pieces using this system…. As I typed that he said “this gets interesting when we get into curved pieces.” Thanks Patrick, hope I get to learn more about this.

Just watched this. I see it's 3 years old. I was wondering if live edge/found curve timbers are treated any differently? I was inspired by Jack's use of found curves and others. I'm planning a structure using live edge posts in the great room and some live edge horizontal members in a few select places. I am using mixed species -Walnut, Ash, Oak, Cherry, and some Osage. I've been milling them since 2014. So they'll already be pretty stable when joinery is cut and raised (starting in a year or two).

Cool stuff. You are wrong about the methods not making it to the English world…. They certainly did. William neubecker and Fred Hodgson both Americans both wrote comprehensive works in the 19th century covering the methods, which neubecker described as “surface development”

Something that is self evident. Development of the dihedral gives you the bevel angle for your saw when you miter the roof sheeting together. True lengths you find, true cuts you make

Complicated scissor truss rigging involves stiff backs on my jobs. Typical bents I balance the load very well with strap locations. I may still use a stiff back if the bottom chord is not continuous. But I do a test lift fr stra location to see if there is any deflection starting. And then adjust the strap. Not hard to do. If you can keep it flat with very little drop on the feet of the posts to get standing up it goes smooth for me. But I have been raising timber frames since 1992. I have raised over 500 I believe.
