San Marino GP 1994 (Saturday Qualifying 1)

- As someone who is passionate about Formula One, and who was absolutely devastated after witnessing the events of this tragic weekend, I have uploaded this qualifying video series as a tribute to the memories Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger.
CAUTION: Some accident scenes are graphic, so if you are sensitive to such material please do not watch.
They clearly show how dangerous this circuit once was, and also how the marshals and paramedics used to treat drivers immediately after an accident back then. At the start of the year the FIA had banned certain driver aids and the sport literally became more dangerous as a result.
Ayrton himself had predicted major accidents and can be seen here investigating how Rubens Barrichello is after his accident, and how he commandeers the safety car, completely against protocol, to drive down to the Villeneuve corner to investigate where and how Roland had gone off the circuit.
It is a testimony to how advanced Formula One, and motorsport in general, has now evolved in terms of safety and post-accident driver care.
For the true Ayrton Senna fans, it's a last chance to see him flying around a track at top speed on his way to his 65th and last ever Pole Position. We can only guess how he would have developed the Williams FW-16 that year, and ponder on what could have been...
Feel free to leave respectful comments only. Thank you.
Rest in Peace - Ayrton and Roland
THIS MATERIAL IS THE OWNERSHIP OF FORMULA ONE MANAGEMENT (F.O.M.)
In them days (I'm 38, 21 at the time) we could NEVER think a driver could ever die any longer: that was something regarding the 'old times', the '70s, we had been through the '80s, got over Villeneuve's untimely death, many things had radically changed since then, drivers looked like untouchable well built-up machines (though not soul-less as Schumacher, to be honest), we were sons of the '80s' 'way onto the future' attitude. Senna could never die, in our eyes.
Imola '94 crashed that dream.
Very Rare I see F1 Qualifying from back then, especially the whole coverage, thanks for the upload, very bad weekend but I get to see some Qualifying!
Thanks man great video nice to see people who are passionate about F1 paying respect to drivers whom i was to young to follow their careers
great video !!!
thanks a lot i've been looking for it a long time ago.
i found it at one of your comments where ya said to acess your account to watch da 94 qualifying...
THANK'S A LOT...
@kofferklo Hi. Thanks for the comment and question. I've come to the conclusion over the years that it's his team mate David Brabham. His helmet was White with Blue on the side, Roland's was also White but with Red on the top. So because I can't see the Red, and because also we see that Simtek follow Damon down that straight to that corner and then Roland's crash occurs before Hill finishes his next lap, it's safe to say it's Brabham - who was overlooked for what a courageous job he did Sunday..
THANK YOU, men. EL mejor video que he visto.....
Anyone else noticed Schumacher pressing that green button on the steering wheel before every heavy braking zone? Automatic downshifts o' clock :P
Yes, this is semi-automatic gearbox... present in Ferrari, McLaren, etc..
Chilling seeing that old corner bring taken in POV
thanks for these videos :)
senna must have had an outstanding last sector!
incredible!and sad!
i wish i had seen senna and schumacher racing against each other for many years more!
I'm glad you're enjoying them :-)
Thanks!!
I'm glad you and others have been kind enough to say they appreciate it. Yes I do have the full race, but no I won't be uploading it for 2 reasons. This took me ages and I've not the time these days. The second point is FOM would probably pull it down anyway, they've pulled many other attempts by others uploading it. I'm amazed this has been allowed to stay, but they won't allow Saturday Qualifying 7..? It would seem they want to still have control and dominate what we can and cannot watch :-(
you can credit that to 2 simple reasons; first, the staggering diferente in stability and performance to the benetton compared to the shitty williams Fw16 early that season. you can easily notice that as senna and hill spun a few times in all the first 3 races of the year. second and somewhat proven already, the beneton had unauthorized driving aids assists such as traction control and launch control making it much easier to drive. and STILL, ayrton beat schumacher to the poleposition all 3races
Geraldo_MAX we are in 2019 now and during the last few years the exact Story of all this came out. You are totally wrong. Benetton did not cheat. They had no driving aids. We know that today.
And Senna was a master on one single lap. No one was ever better on that than Senna. He was the absolute king here. But Schumacher was a Master in driving qualifying rounds for a whole race distance...and winning the qualifying is useless. It's the Race you have to win. An as Michael was able to drive extremely consistent and do one Qualifying lap After another, he won the races.
So Ayrton may won the qualifyings, but Schumacher won the races. And it's about winning races, not qualifyings. And Schumacher was the best in winning races, because no other driver was able to drive that consistently fast for a whole Race distance. That made him superior to any other driver. Even Senna. Ross Brawn explained that very good in the Interview he did about Schumacher for F1 on the Grid. And Ross knew both. And is an absolute Insider. Senna was the best for years and set the Standards. But Michael raised these standards. And thats why Senna would have lost against Michael in 1994 anyway. And also 1995. For his well-earned legacy that was positive. Because Sennas Reputation would not be what it is today if Schumacher would have beaten him constantly for two or three Seasons. And he would have beaten him, no doubt about that as Schumacher just was too dominant in 94 and 95.
@@michaelastockbauer672 Really....wining the championship by 1 point against Damon Hill is hardly the definition of dominant. 95 championship I can concede that Schumacher would have won even if Senna was on the grid.
Just check 3:23 when Schumacher enters the chicane. He is drifting that car into the corner, and the rate of steering input in every corner is just staggering. I have an impression that senna did not have such impressive performance behind the wheel. His input looks like the simpler old school driving and his throttle tapping was becoming a severely outdated technique.
Which is why he beat Schumacher in Quali. You talk rubbish.
MagicAyrtonforever what has this to do with that? Thats pretty much correct. A driver can be unbeatable in 1 Lap, but not able to drive like that for 20 rounds. And thats what made Schumacher so good. He was the only driver who was able to do 20-30 Qualifying laps After another. Others were not. Also Senna was not. And thats what made Schumacher better than anyone else. Senna was a master in Doing 1 fast lap, but Schumacher was a master in consistency. So Senna was better in one lap, but Schumacher was better in the race, because he was able to drive brutally fast every round, while Senna was not able to do that. F1 Insiders confirmed that. People like Ross Brawn, Pat Symonds, Patrick Head etc.
So sorry, but thats you rubbish, thats the truth. Even if a Sennafanboy may not like that. Schumacher just raised the bar to another level, as Senna did before. These two are the best drivers in F1 ever, but Schumacher was simply more consistent and better over a race distance, while Senna was better in one Single lap. But races are won over a Race distance and not in qualifying...
This track is absolutely insane withouth those two chicanes at the start of the lap. Why did someone had to die before something was done..
RIP ROLAND & AYRTON
Very nice case you put forward there and I'd have to say I agree wth you. Michael still did a great job that year but that Williams was a real handful and Ayrton said they'd be accidents at the start of the year after they banned driving aids. Frank Williams, Patrick Head, Adrian Newey and Senna all were of the belief that Benetton were cheating somehow albeit in a very sneaky way. Two great drivers, one still sadly missed, 19 years ago today...
@DAH210774 I think it's probably a legacy of the larger grand prix of the mid to late 1980s where grand prix fields had close to 40 cars and there were pre qualifying sessions to get the field down to 26.
Pre qualifying would be held on thursday morning , then 1st qualifying friday and 2nd on saturday. After pre qualifying was scrapped i spose it was cut down to the two sessions for the reasons you cite but also to prevent qualifying being totally affected by weather like it can be these days.
I'm not sure, I just know that the times they did in the Practise on one or both of the Friday sessions, contributed to their Qualifying Time, yet most drivers would eclipse this on the Saturday as the track rubbered in and they got more confident with their cars and had fine-tuned their set-ups. But Senna set his last ever Pole Position here on the Friday as a result of Saturday's Quali being affected with Roland's crash. Hope that clears it up. Anybody with any further details please comment:)
Doesnt surprise me. It shows Roland's awful crash as well as the part where they give him heart massage. FOM probably doesnt want people to feel disgusted by what they see. best of luck trying to put it up. I remember the first time I saw those images, I almost fell into shock.
What was the quali format back then? Why two days of quali?
Thanks for this video is great, the last pole of the est driver ever
@cfoster81 Correct but I don't think his actual car hit any members of the crews, just the tyre that flew off and ended up leaving the pits all by itself striking many team members in pitlane before ending up down the race track...
Magicco Alesi...I miss your tough racing for us...
It's on the right in column. If it doesn't come up in the related videos which I'd be amazed if it doesn't (as it's my most popular video) search for it in More From' ;-)
Where's Ayrton's qualification??
5:30 that Ferrari has transmission whine like an M3 GTR :O
Gracias ;-)
@Mclarenman1 You're most welcome, glad to be a part of your education! :-)
Where is part 2?
@dave41184 Yes I remember those days well Dave :-) Although in this season there was no pre-quali but I think they had the 107% rule!? Thank goodness most of the cars these days are within a few seconds of one another. Poor Roland was 6 secs a lap off the pace of Ayrton's pole before his crash. Let's hope those new teams with the Cosworths are still competitive and we have a great 2010 season! :-)
little did they know it was going to be a hellish weekend..one of the worse in F1.. yet.. Racing history
I recorded it on video back then...
Formula One Management have now deleted it from me twice!?! Still trying to get it in, bare with me...
I couldnt see roland
@stevehun That was weird! it should have been 1.21.1 I guess
nice
Cool :-)
They say the inside line at Tamburello (with the 2 bumps) is what killed Ayrton by causing irreversible oversteer. Yet at 09:35 you see Hills FW16 take a very tight line at Tamburello, I wonder how flat he took it. Didn't seem to bottom out much, then again he's not on race fuel load here.
Steering shaft broke, didn't you know
Alard Kalff haha
bei 3.01 hin hören man hört das aufsetzen in der senna todes kurve kla und deutlich
