    Ben...hairlines are the hardest for me...the difference between being wiped/cleaned and cabinet wear or natural pocket wear for circulated coins is very hard to determine, especially in capped bust halves, which I collect...do a video on that if you can...cheers and stay safe!

    I noticed the grading services are more likely to straight grade early American coppers (EAC) and early silver type coins (Draped Bust, Flowing Hair) even with scratches. I own a 1805 Draped Bust quarter graded PCGS AG03 despite noticeable scratches. I guess the graders were more forgiving of scratches/gouges because the early coinage have more severe problems such as planchet flaws, plugged holes, and corrosion.

    What I’ve learned is grading scratches vs abrasions is subjective.

    Thanks for the video. Was able to learn a lot. I agree with the scratch grades on the coins. The Washington looks good but you can clearly see the scratch up close. I was surprised with the Peace at ms65 just because the marks are so distracting.

    I’d like to see a video where you intentionally scratched or abraded different Raw coins to see which coins graded as scratched coins.

    Definitely all subjective. You've said before that 63 indicates a coin with 'problems'. This may be true for a Morgan dollar or Mercury dime, but a bust half in 63 is a joy to behold. A bust half with the scratches on that 1925 Peace dollar would come back either scratched or below 63. Definitely not 65. There are certainly reasons for this involving how the coins were stored, etc, but it still seems inconsistent.

    I guess that in the future there will be finer divisions in grading, which includes Details grading. It's not fair to put a big scarlet D on a Bust half that was cleaned long ago, retoned, and looks terrific, and then do exactly the same to a Morgan dollar that was scrubbed with a Brillo pad. A change in grading philosophy just means a few more letters and numbers on a slab insert. I would think a grading company would want to tackle this problem and gain a bunch of revenue by doing so.

    Thank you for another awesome video, I never have and never will be a fan of "beat up" Morgan dollars no matter the date, mint mark; or grade. For me personally, junk silver.

  • @everettwhite9874

    Based on your experience, are rarer coins examined more closely than common dates? I’m having difficulty figuring out the scratch and bag marks issues and whether or not to submit them for grading. But looking at the grades of your coins mine might be worth having graded too. I’m too new to collecting and stacking to know whether I have a coin that will make a decent MS grade. That’s one reason I enjoy watching your videos.
    I have Morgan and Peace Dollars that I’ll be considering for submission after watching a few more of your videos on scratches and bag marks. 😀
    BTW, what magnification was your loupe when you were checking the marks on the Morgan Dollar at about 2:40? The magnification sure made those marks pop out which weren’t very visible before then. What magnification do you recommend for viewing coins?
    Thanks. Looking forward to your reply.

    Scratches in bag marks are pretty definitive cuz most of your car scratches those are going to be cuts from the reeded edge if you don't see the read it scrapes and scratches usually going to be in a straight line so we should be relatively easy to differentiate the two 😊👍

    I think the peace dollar was over graded by a point just because of that large mark on the neck. It's on the obverse device and I think it should have market graded an MS-64.

    Yah I thought the anacs was scratched, and the second gold coin and the last 3 coins. I think that they are very forgiving if the mark or scratches are caused by another coin. If not then that are quick to give a details grade

    I recently found a very rare Colonial coin. 1659 Lord Baltimore Shilling. PCGS graded it AU scratch. It has great details and will be Auctioned in November. My concern is... Will the word Scratch Cause it to be Auctioned at a lower price than is expected for the very rare coin ??

    On the 1898-O(very first coin); if you get that same mark on a PL Morgan what will they call it? I half wish that I could send you 5 PL Morgans and get your opinion since I live in an unfriendly(LCS-wise) city for getting a fair and unbiased opinion. With regards to the 1925 Peace Dollar - I'm not sure what those marks are but I have the same thing going on on a 1889 Morgan that's also UNC.

    Really good info. I did get them all correct (I had seen 2 of them before, so...). I'm wondering if it has to be, or at least approach a gouge to get the scratch comment, as opposed to a "blemish". Is there such a comment as "blemish", btw? Feeling really good about my recent purchase, for sure. And yes, I do remember Max Headroom.

    Hey, Ben !!! - it’s Opening Day for the 2020 Major League Baseball Season !!! ⚾ Errgggh, yeah -- never mind !!! But I was 5 for 5 (batting average of 1.000) on the coin reveals, until you got to the 1925 Peace Dollar. Do you think the scratch on the 1937-D Three-Legged Buffalo Nickel was possibly caused by a staple? And please let your subscribers know that ”Black Diamond,” the North American Bison who modeled for sculptor James Earle Fraser was not physically harmed in the making of the three-legged Buffalo Nickel, but I certainly would end the story there. Thanks !!!

    Talk about frustrating, I submitted a 1982 1/10oz Krugerrand to NGC and it came back UNC Details/Surface Hairlines. You can’t even see the scratches without magnification...

    Grading companies will not like me, I dont think scratched should keep a coin from being fully graded. If scratched and takes the visual appeal away, then the coin should be downgraded. Now scratch and damaged or cleaned ate separate issues. Scratches are what happen when coins are circulated.

    • @MrMonkeySwag96
      @MrMonkeySwag96 4 роки тому +2

      I think NGC/PCGS does downgrade early coinage such as Bust halves with scratches rather than giving the details designation. By "scratches", I meant surface gouges. Obviously coins with hairline scratches will come back "details cleaned."

    • @paulbegansky5650
      @paulbegansky5650 4 роки тому

      @@MrMonkeySwag96 I am also talking newer coins. A scratch or small gouge can be caused by another coin over the years. I would rather see the coin graded than to see grade detail due to scratch. If the scratch is unsightly take it down a few grades. Details grade seems weak.

    • @jeffw1267
      @jeffw1267 4 роки тому +1

      Sometimes you can tell if a coin was scratched by a staple, as when being carelessly removed from a 2x2 holder. That can't be called a circulation scratch. But sometimes one can't tell when or how a scratch got on the coin. I specialize in Indian cents and PCGS and NGC will straight grade circulated coins that look like they got caught in a weed whacker. They don't like one big scratch, but are fine with a whole bunch of small scratches.
