I know this was a joke but I recently played FFX for the first time all the way through, the amount of people I ended up talking about it was kind of a shock. Coworkers whom I've never talked about videogames with, people who played it 20 years ago and still remember it, people who have never played an RPG besides FFX. It was great. Most of them said the same thing, "That had the stupid soccer game in it right? .... OH RIGHT IT WAS CALLED BLITZBALL!!" I love FFX.

I first played this game when I was 8 years old because I would sit and watch my Dad play it. Needless to say I didn’t get super far lol. I got stuck fighting the boss during the Mi’ihen operation and BEGGED my Dad to help. He refused, only repeatedly saying “You’re my son. You can beat it”. I was so mad at him that I gave up on it. When he passed away 3 years later and I got the games from his collection, I decided to give it another go. When I got to the credits all I could say was “I finally did it Dad. Because I’m your son” Needless to say I cried during the credits.
Playing this game after my Dad died and experiencing the relationship that Titus had with his father…to experience a game where death and memories play such a CRUCIAL role to the story and development of the characters…..this “game” is so much more than a game to me. And it’s so much more than that for anyone who plays it. It is the nexus that brings together the lives and memories of all who play it. Thank you for this video 🙏🏾

Sure X-2 is a romp at times and can get silly, but it's an emotionally powerful game. Under the cheese it's wistful and contemplative, and in Chapter 4 beyond it really comes out. Luca's Episode Complete and the It's Better This Way ending brings me to very ugly tears. You can see the world grasp for a new meaning, whether in politics or in love. X-2 has a lot to offer if one is willing to look underneath the cheese.

I have all these version of FFX as well as the Vita version. I just love how bright, colorful, and tropical this world is. You feel like you're on vacation, and I think its linearity lends to that. Life is an open world adventure, vacations are usually linear journeys to a specific destination, often with nice stops along the way. FFX feels more like a roadtrip to me than FFXV ever did.
The characters are all bright and positive. The game is not drenched in darkness. Its tone is kind of unique within the series.
It looked amazing for its time but it doesn't suffer from an overly realistic presentation that sacrifices art design, like current FF games. We still had non-human party members and as realistic as the graphics were, it still felt kinda anime-ish. I miss that.

Loved it - just wanted to share some of my own theories as well:
I've always thought about Yuna rejoining/supporting as kinda a final part of her development - everything comes full circle. It's been a common thing (in history) of people who lead the charge against an old regime ending up becoming some of its strongest supporters after the fact, or are at least extremely nostalgic for it. I'd haven't heard about that cut content before, but honestly, after knowing that it exists, just makes me feel more confident in my theory - they were considering something similar at one stage, but then cut it. It's honestly a very interesting arc Yuna has been on, but I honestly think that considering Yuna never got such a proof of what Yu Yevon had done to her father, it just kinda allows her to unknowingly repeat her father's mistakes.
As well, it's gonna be very hard to try and not do anything close to OG VII's plot, considering the amount of theories that already exist about the two being connected - so I do wish them luck if they ever do do X-3 to make somehting completely new.

I view X-2 as a celebration of life after endless tragedy.
Tidus' revival is not a finger snap reversal, it is the natural culmination of her recovery and a hell of a lot of hard work.
TIDE-US (grrrrr) still feels fear that he is ephemeral in the secret ending, and his and Yuna's decision to cherish each other in the present is a perfect ending in very literal sense, seeing as you need to 100% the game (*shudders in ptsd*) but also because it wraps up the narrative in a perfect bow.
Unless 3 is a masterpiece, canon ends there for me. John Dimaggio can't even do the Wakka voice anymore, if the audio drama is anything to go by.
Oh and PS it's more or less confirmed that Yuna caused the Beckoning and I wouldn't be surprised if Tidus wished Sin back because he's taking their break up hard and their last adventure was an aphrodisiac.

Incidentally, it was recently that Braska's inclusion in the series-crossover mobile game Dissidia Final Fantasy Opera Omnia was included in the global (thus, official English localization) client. I don't recall offhand what all went down, but Yuna's reunion with her father allowed him to witness what had become of his successors, Tidus and Jecht (who had since been allied a while through DFFOO's...world?) had some comparisons and contrasts, and Auron was allowed some reprieve to again journey with the man he and Jecht both felt they'd failed, the latter to an exploitable degree. DFFOO, much as I've skipped much of its scenes due to having only played about half the represented series, has been an exercise in resonance and dissonance of characters and dynamics among the titles' narratives, and even within them, as showcased in Braska's arrival... _before Rikku!_ Seriously, assets for her implementation had been datamined, yet several years in she's still MIA, despite frikkin' _Reks_ being the latest addition in the Japanese version!

This is my friend's most impactful game (series?) and we have many discussions about the endings and whether bringing back Tidus was a good or bad decision, both personally and thematically. Here, you've outlined pretty much how I feel about it. Yuna and Spira have taken a step backward in their process of grief, which is not an uncommon thing to experience emotionally. But the tangibility of the dead in their world presents a unique opportunity to explore WHY holding onto the past and deceased loved ones too long is an unhealthy thing to do, even though it's so tempting. It's an ambitious undertaking, but I'd love to see it done justice, giving us true closure for the FF10 universe.

In the game they tell him he's a dream, but after doing some research, I found out he's a summon like the aeons, which is why he can see the human form of Bahamut. They never really explained that well imo and I think also people took the dream thing at face value because of how it was presented. I played this game when I was 5-6 years old and replaying it as a 14 year old, I just never understood what they were trying to tell me unless I went out of my way to watch videos on the topic. The presentation of lore in the game makes it easy to rub your head when trying to connect points together cause you really have to pay attention to names and what important characters are saying

I liked X and X-2, i feel like they make a nice duology (I wasn't familiar with the audio drama or book until now and my head cannon says they dont exist) however the difference between the endings are that: even the summary of X's ending makes me cry and X-2's reveal that 'titus isn't dead, actually' and their reunion doesn't. It's like it back pedals some of Yuna's character growth of love and loss and having to move on and find "life after love". But idk I'm sure square will release X-3 and fight sin again just like X and titus will die again and then we'll have X-4 (a sneaky X-2 remake) to look forward to.

I am pretty excited for the 3rd. What I was wondering is if Sin is summoned back through the beckoning does it mean that every defeated Sin over the last 1000 years could possibly be beckoned back, possibly simultaneously? Is it even Jetch’s Sin that has been beckoned back?

Yeah, over the past few decades, it seems that video game companies are having a difficult time resolving their cliffhangers as fans would love them to do. You already mentioned the return of former Soldier First Class Genesis making his return in the secret ending of Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus. What does Genesis intend to do with Weiss, and what can the now well-established heroes do to stop his plans where Zack wasn't able to put a permanent stop to Genesis before? Then we have Capcom's Mega Man universe. There are now 11 games in the main series, and we know that Dr. Light and Dr. Wily will build X and Zero at some point, but what happens to the original cast of robots? The X series, this one stopped at 8 games in the main series and ends with something happening to the new Maverick Hunter Axl. What, exactly did Lumine do to him? Even if Axl is repaired, how are his systems going to be affected by Lumine's last action? Also, though many fans don't want it, Sigma must somehow return again because we find out in the Zero series that Sigma won't face true defeat until the first Cyber Elf is created to fully nullify the the computer virus that Sigma is. And then Mega Man Legends 2 ended with Mega Man Volnutt/Trigger stuck in space. The next sequel flat-out cancelled around the time that Inafune left Capcom, no one else willing to take up the mantle. This is why I never really got excited about newer generation game consoles after the PS2... Aside from the Final Fantasy 13 trilogy and Final Fantasy 15... there was no more continuation of any of my other favorite game series on any of them. Any Mega Man series, the original Castlevania timeline, none of it.

    I personally don’t want a FFX3.
If they take the Braska prequel approach, they are just telling stories already told. Not worth a 20 year wait imo. Besides, I prefer a bit of mystery behind those events. Having a whole game to detail them will ruin the mystery. Less is more, as they say.
If FFX3 follows the event of the audio drama and novella, I feel the game will be doomed to fail. Whether you like them or not, it’s undeniable that those pieces of media have left a less than appetizing taste in the mouths of a big chunk of the fandom. For it to be salvageable, there either has to be HUGE retcons or the story has to be good enough to contend against both the 20 year wait AND the acknowledged canon of the divisive AD and novella… Sadly, either situation is not ideal.
So, for me, I’d rather just see the series be left untouched. I’m just so tired as a FFX fan…

The truth is, continued development interest in the Final Fantasy X series was a victim of the Square Enix merger to my knowledge; Everyone who was involved with the game is still involved with Final Fantasy to this day, although one of the scenario writers is now a free lancer, they still have a good relationship with SE and accepts work from them. To my knowledge, the *only* reasons we didn't really see anything after X-2 is purely because the leadership at SE had no interest in approving another game while the writers equally have moved on as they wanted to try new ideas. Keep in mind all the guys involved with this title were in their 30s when they made it and they're now in their 50s, so unless they decide to go back to this out of a spark of nostalgia, it is very unlikely it will be touched again. More likely new blood will want to make a new title out of their love of the game when they were young and how that would turn out will be purely up to speculation, if that; Such was the case with the FFVII remake.

Fantastic video, I particularly loved how you analyzed the core themes of the games and did justice to FFX-2, which does a very good job in picking up on the wider implications of the original's ending.
However, I'm surprised you didn't mention the richest opportunity for the FFX world to become a bigger franchise than just squeezing an extra game: A prequel.
Be it an exploration of Braska's pilgrimage, the events that led to the Bevelle vs. Zanarkand war, the creation of Sin or even a former summoner's pilgrimage, the world of Spira is ripe with stories worth exploring that tackle the same themes as FFX.
Honestly, FFX-2 already wrapped all the important narrative threads. Yuna and Tidus's arcs are done. There are even alternate endings in which Yuna either never revives Tidus or outright refuses to resurrect a dream.
The potential is in expanding the past. It's a fortunate place, honestly, since you know that whatever plot point you create will automatically be resolved happily in ~1000 years, so you can create any intrigue and destruction you want meanwhile.
Like FF7 Crisis Core, there is great potential in tragic stories with beloved characters, as long as you ultimately know their sacrifice means something.

Thank you for watching, and you bring up a very good point! I wanted to dive into the prequel idea in this video a bit more, but I ultimately felt like what I had in the script at the time was taking too much attention away from focusing on the core of the video. Point of order, Calms (prior to the Eternal Calm) lasted only about a year, not several.
I didn't put this together on my first playthroughs. I thought Calms were about a decade. I was quite put out by the revelation, but I realized it was for the best. If the Calm had only *just* ended at the start of X then our young party members would be almost as inexperienced as Tidus.
It also makes the absence of a Sin Truther faction in X-2 more reasonable as 2 years later is well past the normal timeline.
I think it could also have interesting ramifications for the Beckoned Sin plotline. Yuna could find her authority in Nu Yevon irreparably damaged by Sin's resurgence even if the incident is quickly addressed. Though I'm not sure how they would make that hit different from the aftermath of sending Yunalesca.

Where did you get 1 year from? The Calm definitely is 10 years, they clearly explain that on the Mi'hen Highroad when meeting the little girl. 10 years and some month ago Yuna said on the ship she met Jecht the day her father left. It didn't take them 9 years to finish the journey and kill Sin. Auron brought Tidus to Spira at the moment Sin's new shell were finished.

@@Ariancia.Thystarian I forget. It might have been when I was reading supplemental material. But Braska's Calm was about a year long about ten years ago. @@Brahmsonite The fandom wiki agree with you too. It says Braska's calm was slight less than a year. So no calm actually have a set time, what we where suppose to take away from the Mi'hen explanation is that the calm is the time between Sin dies and Sin comes back. How long that time is seems to vary. And to Yuna, no matter how short the time, it's worth it.
Sin kills when it comes to close to groups of people. And until Sin starts wandering aimlessly it's controlled by the last "final summoning". So if it's strong enough they might be able to keep Sin away for a while. Of course Jecht being an emotional person failing to not get to close to Beside, most likely trying to check up on Braska's daughter. While missing his son. Using Shiva's fate to keep Sin still, because it kept Jecht still reminding him of home.
But that means Jecht managed to keep Sin some what under his control for 9 years?

Due to the fire Flys being unstable and vast amount of zombies running around Zanakerand. Where the young generation going to have to fight the older generation to be free. "Stay away from the summoner you heathen!" Who knows they might take this and use it in Kingdom Hearts Sora.

Im pretty optimistic about the concept of FFX-3 tbh. The only way they can fuck it up royally for me is to go "Btw the FF7 connection is canon lets double down on that"
Say they rehash old things and we have to fight sin again? Cool, Spira lives off of cycles so maybe one final one to truly put the fayth, summoning as a whole and maybe even the farplane to rest could be a nice send off. (also probably the return of seymour)
If they go with new stuff? Im totally open. Honestly what they COULD do which would be a bold-as-fuck move would be to have the cast remember being in Dissidia, possibly Opera Omnia particularly. A lot of lessons learned from strangers from other worlds. Though that might be too radical of a change. After all, currently in OO Tidus and Jecht have a pretty healthy relationship and Yuna is able to journey with her father.
And Im a sucker so ya know what they could do that'd make me scream in happiness? The crew repair or use parts of Vegnagun to shoot sin out of the sky in a show of defiance for the past even using the past to do so. And then going forward with defeating the root cause of the farplane disturbances which I assume is Seymour. He could even be what summoned Sin back. Maybe a boss rush of the former high summoners' final aeons similar to the end of FFX but its not _your_ aeons this time.

It could come out that Yuna didn't just resurrect him that one time where he died to a bomb & then out of nowhere he could be told that the reason he exists once again in the first place is because the dead have their own desires to fulfill, therefor his & yuna's roles of the first game reverse where he has go on a pilgrimage.
