I'm Southern all day, and I must admit that I truly enjoyed what SCSU brought to the table here! They didn't back down at all! They proved they came to play, and entertain the crowd! SCSU band not one of the boring #MEAC bands that play those silly little marches at a freaking BOTB's! Save that shit for concert season! SCSU entertained SU, and that's what it's all about! Enjoying the bands while they're entertaining during football season! Great job SU and SCSU!
As a former SCSU Marching 101 Drum Major all I have to say is FREEDOM BOWL 1991..... Bobbie Dodd Stadium, Atlanta, GA If you don't know ask your SU alumni.

Why are so many people obsessed over numbers. SU is large. Why do people think they look small? SCSU is smaller, but still have the numbers to put out a quality product. Numbers shouldn't be as big of a deal as people are making it out to be.
Despite SCSU's financial problems it's good to the band program is still alive and the kids still have the passion. Hopefully in a few years the program will get back to where it once was a few years back .

To be honest I thought SCSU held its own based on its numbers. Lets be clear SCSU is definitely no punk. Heck for a 85 block they sound pretty darn good. They are going through a tough time financially as a school. Trust and believe its not only SCSU but Southern was in the same situation struggling when it came to resources. The only difference is SCSU cut most band scholarships and Southern didn't point blank. Those kids will be fine...just give them a few years. If only this could have happened in 2010.
I agree SCSU didn't sound bad, we are simply smaller and our songs don't sound as full as when we had the larger band. A lot the folks in this clip are only used to one thing - cranking. That is not the Marching 101's style, however, when they were much larger, they cranked when they wanted to.
I am from Camden, SC, grew up attending many SCSU games, and I am a big 101 fan. However, I went to a predominantly white university N.C State University and one factor about predominantly white universities is alumni support . They graduate, make money, and give thousands of dollars back to the university. Although N.C. State is a state funded school, the university does not solely depend on the state for funding. The university is well funded by their alumni as well. NC A&T also has s strong alumni who gives back to that university and its why that HBCU is thriving. SCSU alumni have to support the university and give back. The university definitely can’t solely rely on the state of South Carolina to fully support and fund SCSU like it does USC or Clemson, and we know why. The alumni have to step up and give back to the only state funded HBCU in South Carolina.
If this would’ve happened any year from 1990 -2010 It would’ve been a real matchup. 101 just hasn’t been the same and it’s heart breaking

With a larger SCSU band, it would have been a different battle. SCSU didn't sound bad, they are just smaller than we are used seeing them due to past financial issues at our school. Their songs from the past don't sound as full as when they were a much larger band, but the fact that they came shows they are no punks and not afraid of a battle. It was good to hear the female announcer display some class in her commentary at the end because Haymer was being extra the entire time. Though SU is my 2nd favorite SWAC band, he can be very colorful at times, but I've come to expect this from him just based on his battles with the other Swac bands. It's great to have passion when battling and maybe that's how things go in the SWAC but know that when one HBCU hurts whether by finances or some other force like what currently occupies the office of the presidency in this country, they all hurt.

Most of the songs you heard are songs the 101 played including the stand standards like Get Up for the Bulldogs and Pass the Peas, are songs played when the band was huge during the Ellis era and I will repeat, if the band had the numbers we enjoyed under the Ellis era the battle would be different. We all know that SU is known to crank on EVERYTHING, that's not the style of the Marching 101or most of the MEAC bands for that matter.

In no means am I a fan of the 101 but I do know they've always had confidence. They've always been aggressive and not afraid to battle, even if the sound isn't quite right. This just isn't a good year for scsu as far as numbers are concerned. Good job to them for bringing what they got to the table tho and SU as well.

No, the old band director was Morris Brown's former director Mr. Eddie Ellis. The late Mr. Knighten (one of SU's former directors) joined Mr. Ellis staff in 2010 as one of the arrangers and passed away later that year.
Maybe to new people it's odd, but those older enough to remember know that these two have battled a few times in the past in the early 90s when the Marching 101 was directed by the late Mr. Ronald J. Sarjeant. There clips on here.

Remember, all it takes is for Southern to face financial difficulties, and their band will be in the same predicament as the Marching 101, with cuts to their band program. Remember, SCSU may be struggling today, but it may be Southern struggling tomorrow.

Past financial issues with our school which included scholarship cuts for many band members. In addition,when Mr. Ellis was let go, many band members did not return to the band.

I love it and I am for SU but the Baritones are overblowing the rest of the upper and lower brass. Take it down a notch and blend. Keep it even. I should be hearing more of the Higher brass then the med range. I can see if it was a solo for the Baritones but they are hauling it. Plus I am seeing new songs being added Love it. Keep it coming. Play these songs all season then you got a really good band. Can't wait to see the Battle against TC and Alcorn at Crank Fest! Keep it up Jukebox just don't over Blow each section. Listen in to each other and keep it a the same volume.

Haymer is that way regardless. I've seen him in other clips acting that way, but that's what he's used to in the Swac so I've come to expect it and not be surprised by it.

I can't stand the emotionless sterility of MEAC Bands - boring as hell - BUT, BUT this little band of SCSU had life, passion, and a groove. @40:00 they dug down deep (or stole some SWAC band's arrangements ) and got busy trying to crush the Human Jukebox. We got some good R&B & some Rap. I enjoyed the heck out of it. Can we trade FAMU for them? Early in the battle, they played NECK back at SU & then they played HAY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BARN. It was kinda cute. THEY MADE THEM SOUND "RATED G FOR GENERAL AUDIENCES". I prefer those two songs to be "Rated R for Adults".

This is not a matter of SCSU having less power. Even if a band is playing forte, it should not sound like everyone is trying to drown out everyone else. In the case of SU, the baritones were just too strong.

B tones bringing the funk this year but honestly something about su seems a little off these days. If you watch clips of the late 90s-08' the power was incredible regardless of the numbers. They seemed to be more aggressive. It's still early in the season but I hope su can regain that power they were once known for.
